Asia Pacific: 351 million SVOD subs by 2023

Three Chinese companies will top the Asia Pacific SVOD rankings by subscribers in 2023. Not expected to ever operate as standalone platforms in , and Amazon Prime will take fourth and fifth places respectively.

Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “The Asia Pacific OTT TV & Video Forecasts report expects 351 million subscription video on- demand subscribers by 2023, up from 141 million in 2017. China will have 235 million SVOD subs in 2023 – or two-thirds of the 22 countries covered.”

Netflix ($3.12 billion) will top the SVOD revenues chart in 2023. The top three platforms will account for 54% of the region’s SVOD revenues by 2023. Asia Pacific SVOD revenues will triple from just under $5 billion in 2017 to $15 billion in 2023. China’s share will remain at about half of the total.

Murray continued: “Asia Pacific OTT revenues from TV episodes and movies will reach $42 billion in 2023; nearly triple the $15 billion recorded in 2017. The total will increase by $5 billion in 2018 alone.”

China and Japan will account for three-quarters of the region’s OTT revenues by 2023. China will command 62% ($25.97 billion) by 2023; increasing its share from 59% ($8.79 billion) of the 2017 total.

Advertising on OTT sites [AVOD] revenues are the main source of OTT revenues. However, SVOD is growing faster – tripling between 2017 and 2023. SVOD will take 37% of OTT revenues by 2023, with AVOD supplying 54%. These proportions were 33% and 55% respectively in 2017.

• OTT TV & video revenues from movies and TV episodes will climb from $67 million in 2017 to $397 million by 2023. on OTT sites will provide $76 million to the 2023 total, up from $24 million in 2017.

Main assumptions behind the forecasts • There are plenty of OTT players, many of which are local. • Thailand has plenty of potential for growth. • The IMF has substantially lowered its GDP growth forecasts for the next five years, although the economy is expected to improve from 2015. • SVOD will bring in $293 million by 2023, up from $37 million in 2017. There were 1.06 million SVOD subs by end-2017, but this total will grow rapidly to 4.31 million in 2023.

• Piracy is a major problem, with 2 million homes receiving illegal TV signals. Furthermore, the OTT sector is very crowded.

• Iflix launched in Thailand in September 2015 in partnership with TrueMove (THB100/month or THB1,000/year ($2.99 and $30). Owned by and Evolution Media Capital, Iflix launched first in Malaysia and the Philippines in May 2015. We forecast 861,000 paying subscribers in Thailand by 2023.

• HOOQ, an SVOD platform controlled by , and Warner Bros, launched in Thailand in May 2015. HOOQ has a Thai distribution agreement with mobile operator AIS. HOOQ offers 20,000 titles for THB119/month ($3.56). We forecast 861,000 paying subs in Thailand by 2023.

• Viu started operations in Thailand (THB99/month ($2.96) with sub-titles) in May 2017. It is now available to AIS mobile subscribers. Viu signed a content deal with local company GMM in April 2018. PCCW’s OTT platform Viu announced 16.3 million monthly active users across 27 countries by end-2017, up from 4.8 million a year earlier. We expect 344,000 paying subs in Thailand by 2023.

• In March 2018, Hong Kong’s TVB announced plans to launch an OTT platform in Thailand in partnership with MVTV. Content will be supplied by TVB as well as 100 linear channels.

• Netflix launched in Thailand in January 2016 as part of its global expansion. Netflix costs THB280/month for one screen, THB350/month for two screens and THB420/month for four screens and HD. We forecast 1.20 million subscribers by 2023, up from 188,000 at end-2017. Content was localized in April 2017. Netflix has a distribution deal with mobile operator AIS.

• Amazon Prime Video started operations in November 2016 as part of its global rollout. Subscriptions are cheaper than Netflix at $5.99/month, but Amazon offers little original or local content. We forecast 215,000 Amazon subs by 2023.

• In July 2018, Facebook signed a £200 million deal with the English Premier League to stream live matches in South East Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) for three years until 2022.

• Doonee (THB150/month, $4.49) launched in January 2015. It had about 1 million registered users by mid-2016, but only about 60,000 paid. Payments can be made through 7-11 stores. Owned by Mediaplex International, it has a distribution deal with mobile operator AIS, DTAC and True Move.

• Line TV claims to be Thailand’s largest OTT platform, with 32 million monthly active users (mostly mobile). Line has 161 content partners.

• Other SVOD platforms include Hollywood HDTV (THB199/month, $5.95, with content deals with most of the top Hollywood studios. Rentals cost THB50 and DTO THB199). Primetime (THB199-399/month ($5.95-11.94) has access to 1,000 movies and 2,000 TV shows. Monomaxxx (THB129/month, $3.86 for 14,000 hours of content or rentals for THB60-80) is available via AIS, True Move and DTAC.

• Intouch Holdings (40.45% shareholder of AIS), through its mobile operator Advanced Info Service, launched the AIS Fiber platform in April 2015. Passing 6 million premises, AIS Fiber had 571,800 subscribers by March 2018. The company wants 800,000 fiber subs by end-2018.

• AIS is putting greater emphasis on its content provision. AIS Play and Playbox had 270,000 paying subs by end-2017. AIS Play (from THB399/month) is the mobile service, giving access to Doonee, Viu, HOOQ, Netflix and HBO Plus. AIS had 40.1 million mobile subscribers by March 2018. AIS Playbox is the entry point for the fiber entertainment platform comprising 27-40 linear channels (including HBO exclusively) for THB299-599/month, on-demand titles, Doonee and HOOQ.

• True Move H had 27.63 million mobile subscribers by March 2018. True had 3.3 million fixed broadband subs by March 2018. True has passed 10 million premises with its broadband network.

• True Corporation had 2.16 million pay subscribers to its cable TV, satellite TV and (limited) IPTV services by end-2017. The operator offers pay TV as part of triple and quadruple-play deals. True Corp is 50.21% owned by CP Group and 18% by China Mobile, with the rest floated.

• State-owned TOT launched its IPTV platform in January 2013, targeting its 1.28 million broadband subscribers (up to 40Mbps). TOT offers SVOD platform Monomaxxx (THB129/month for access to 10,000 titles).
