Welcome! My classes are very demonstration heavy, so you will learn a lot. Bring a notebook for note taking and of course all of your supplies and questions! Our lessons will be focused on animal and landscape painting techniques for ALL levels with a focus on TEXTURE and SPECIAL EFFECTS. Structure and flow of lessons will be grouped into themes: trees & grasses, skies and water, rocks and cliffs, texture and animal features from equine & bovine to wildlife (such as wolves and elk.) PLEASE EMAIL ME FOR DIGITAL REFERENCE PHOTOS that you may want upload to your tablets / laptops or to have printed out for in class demos. These images will be available a few weeks prior to the Rendezvous

PAINTS: We use tubes only. BE READY FOR CLASS! Recommended TUBE Artist Brands: Winsor & Newton. Da Vinci or High end “STUDENT” quality brand such as Cotman. Squeeze out into a palette as shown on next page. They should be DRIED for travel. You may need to bring extra tubes depending on how many days you attend.

Please do not use PAN sets as they are typically disappointingly under-pigmented. THE ONLY PAN SET I would recommend would be Richeson “St Petersburg” Set of watercolour paints “ULTIMATE set” SKU# 58036. https://www.madisonartshop.com/58036.html

Otherwise tube colours as indicated (or something similar) • Hansa light • Gamboge (or New gamboge) • Permanent • Alizarin crimson • Prussian • Ultramarine Blue • Raw sienna • Burnt sienna • Burnt umber • Hookers dark (NOTE it must say DEEP or DARK…if you cannot find this then a PHTAHLO GREEN will be ok) • green • Violet (ie: “dioxazine” or “winsor violet” or “Da Vinci Violet”) • Permanent rose • Phthalo Blue (do not buy “green shade”) • Paynes Grey (missing from chart but can be placed near ) *OPTIONAL tube of opaque white guoache

PAPER: A BLOCK or PAD of 11” x14” 140lb COLD PRESSED 100% RAG paper in BRIGHT WHITE (Recommended Brands: Winsor & Newton or Arches or Fabriano). NOTE: YOU WILL NEED several loose sheets of wc paper as well for tests and colour charts / exercises that are not tied up in a block.

BRUSHES: • Synthetic or Natural Hair washbrush, 1 .” • White Nylon bristle #0 round (for masking fluid) • #3 round (kolinsky sable or synthetic blend) • #6 round (kolinsky sable or synthetic blend) • # 8 or 10 round (kolinsky sable or synthetic blend) • ½” flat • .5” flat • 1” or 1.5” fan brush or synthetic fan brush ( I will bring some of these magical little wizardsfrom of my own line of brushes for purchase @ 15.99 cash or credit accepted)

PALETTE:

My favourite STUDIO palette: https://www.dickblick.com/products/masterson-aqua-pro-watercolor-palette/ OR A smaller folding palette might e easier to travel with especially if you are planning on joining me for an outdoor session. https://www.dickblick.com/products/large-plastic-folding-palette/

Regardless of what you choose….Your palette needs to have as many wells as you have tubes of paint. PLUS at least 6 areas for pools of paint. SQUEEZE your paints out according to the diagram on the next page

OTHER: • Masking fluid: “Pebeo drawing gum” 45ml is my favoutite (whatever you use – be sure it is a Bottle of REMOVABLE masking) • • 1” masking tape (medium tack) • two plastic water containers ie: margarine or yogurt containers or even collapsible travel bowls • Plain Notebook or sketchbook 8”x10” or 9”x12” max • 2H pencil, HB pencil • White vinyl eraser • Kneadable eraser • Box of Kleenex • paper Towel ROLL or WHITE rags • A thin palette knife or utility knife for releasing your watercolour sheets from your block. • REFERENCE PHOTOS (email me for the digital files and also bring some of your own to work from if you like)

Classes will be primarily IN STUDIO however, we will do one optional excursion to one of the ranches in Dubois. For Plein Aire Painting you would need to augment some of the above: • a smaller travel palette • travel stool • stable water containers • travel case for your brushes • perhaps a back pack for your supplies as opposed to the tote bag.
