The New Way Around the Lake The ULCER 07 course will also have a new look and feel. We wanted to return to the route that defines what ULCER is - around Utah Lake. Route director Tim Shea has meticulously mapped out three distance options from Thanksgiving Point- an ―Easy 33‖, a ―Half Lake 67‖, and ―The Epic 111 Century‖. We proceed clockwise around the lake to the south and up the west side back to Thanksgiving Point. It‘s the traditional route except in reverse! ULCER: BACK AROUND THE LAKE!! The Utah Lake Century Epic Ride (ULCER) returns on August 11th to This direction was picked for several reasons - the half metric and the original around-the-lake course but with some incredibly BIG metric century riders will have shaded rest stops for their ride. The changes! It‘s not going to be your standard 100-mile ride with a Epic Century riders will have the wind at their backs for the long couple of good rest stops. Bonneville Bicycle and Touring Club stretch on the west side if the weather gods cooperate. Most important (BBTC) wanted to make ULCER 07 into a great event for riders and though is rider safety. ―We recognize the housing and traffic growth their families. The National Kidney Foundation of Utah has been on the west side is significant,‖ says Jerry and ―by going northbound selected as the primary charitable donation recipient for ULCER 07. in the afternoon we avoid the morning rush hours of recreational This year‘s ULCER 07 will be an event from before the start until after vehicles traveling south to the sand dunes.‖ Police will also be present you finish! and actively patrolling for increased enforcement of the ‗Share the Road‘ rule. This year’s ULCER will be special for several reasons………... A New Start/Finish Line Venue at Thanksgiving Point – ULCER 07 start and finish line has been moved from American Fork High School to Thanksgiving Point. We‘ve outgrown the old location that served us well. Now we‘re moving to something new and we‘ll have - shade, lush green grass, ample parking and our own place to throw a post-ride party. Thanksgiving Point is described as a ―world- class‖ venue!! There‘s a pavilion big enough to hold riders and families, and lots of soft grass with picnic tables to relax after the ride.

More Changes? Oh yeah! There‘s more and some will be kept secret until the day of the ride! But here‘s a few new fun things that you need to know and can spread the word on: (Continued on Page 4)

SAG – The untold story By Mickey Applebaum Many of you may have seen me and my white Rover zipping along the various courses you have been riding over the past couple of years while I have been providing SAG (Support and Gear) to riders along the way. Some have asked me how I got started doing SAG and what motivates me to do it. I started out simply by wanting to be there for my wife Barbara while she was riding so that she could get the types of foods and drinks she needs due to her dietary requirements and health needs. As folks got used to seeing me on the rides they started asking if I had any extra water or Gatorade, Clif bars or other food items, then they saw that I had a floor pump with me and extra tubes…

and so it went. Now I‘ve become such a fixture on rides that folks A mass start planned at 7:30AM at a starting line complete with from many different clubs and geographic locations know me by name music and all the fanfare. We‘ve designed a new dedicated start & and recognize the white SAG wagon that the Rover has become. finish line area. We‘ll start with a motorcycle police-led mass rider Recently, BBTC created the position of SAG Coordinator and start through Lehi to get everyone warmed up and psyched up. We‘re somehow I got it. Now I want to make the world of SAG available to topping off the event with activities for kids and non-riding partners all who might be interested in it. This is a wonderful opportunity for from noon to 6 pm while they wait for their significant others to cross BBTC members and their families to become more involved in helping the finish line. out other members. Dear LRRH, Just wanted to tell you what a wonderful ride I had last Saturday thanks to your immaculate planning and A Success!!! LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD 2007 organization. When I arrived I could not believe the turn out of women. By Penny Perkins It was well attended. The support on the ride was better than any 100 A BIG thanks to the MORE than 100 club members that volunteered mile ride I have ever completed. My favorite part was the guys in suits at for The Little Red Riding Hood Bicycle Ride. We had about 1,650 the last rest stop doing the valet parking. I was pretty tired by then, just riders this year and with the addition of the Friday night event…our finishing chemotherapy, and volunteers really stepped up, worked hard and pulled off an event that to have them approach me to WE can be proud of. The final totals are not yet in for the Silent park my bike was hilarious Auction and Bike giveaway…but LRRH‘s contribution to the and it sent me off in a better Huntsman Cancer Foundation is about $17,000 compared to last years mood. I usually do the whole $5000. But I think 100 but opted to leave out the that the following Idaho loop and still I rode comments by our 83. And that was enough. riders says it best! Who could ask for better weather also. After completing the ride I made it Dear LRRH, to the table where the guys I just wanted to pass wearing the DI skirts and along my thanks for tags were selling the jerseys and hats etc. I purchased a hat and I love it. such a wonderful I also purchased a Jersey when I registered and again I love it and the event. I thought the design is outstanding. I can't wait for next years ride. I know that the organization, support success of this ride took a lot of planning and hard work and I just and attitude of the wanted to honor you for it and thank you for an enjoyable Saturday.- volunteers was outstanding. Also *Becky * great food! What a great event! I will definitely plan on doing it Dear LRRH, again. Thanks! -Philippa (Pip) As this was my first organized ride, I was a little apprehensive about going but it was so much fun!!! The path was well marked and even Dear LRRH, with the detour at the last minute, the road support got us headed in the I wanted to tell you what a superb right direction. I was particularly impressed and grateful for the job you and your army of gentleman at the corner of 3000 North and Highway 23. There was volunteers did this year. This is the quite a bit of gravel on the road on the way to the marina, but by the time 3rd year I've traveled from we came back from the marina, he had a push broom and had cleared a for the ride and it was great gravel free path so we wouldn't fall. With the beautiful landscape the best yet. Thank you so much for and great organization, I don't think I could have picked a better first having early registration packet ride. Thanks for making it an awesome experience!--Cindy pick-up for the SLC area participants. This makes a world of difference. My friend and I rode the 100 mile course and were able to start on time so that we didn't face headwinds, late rest stop problems or tax the SAG drivers by being on the course late, let alone have to ride in the heat of the day. From my point of view, it was absolutely flawless execution. And the popsicles at the end - just icing on the cake. Thanks again for a great effort. --Sarah from Davis, CA

Saturday Jul 28 09:00 AM Mountain Biking (Round Valley Loop in Park City) 20/M/3-4/c The Round Valley Trail is a nicely built singletrack trail. This buff trail climbs over a ridge, dips through Round Valley, then runs over another ridge to drop back down to the valley floor 5.7 miles later. Adding some broad improved trail and a couple of city streets, well bike the popular 14.3-mile loop. Despite the distance, the Round Valley Loop is an easy ride. The Yellow Jersey By Ralph Hurne published in 1973 Breakaway Books. If you can find this book, it is a fine fictional novel based on the Tour de France in the 60‘s when the teams represented countries and not corporations. It has great character development, similar to Hemmingway, though the bicycle focus of the book makes it better than Hemmingway. A very good book for those that like to read fiction and have an interest in bike racing novels. Those of you with altimeters on your bike computers know that Salt Lake City is about 4200 feet above sea level, and climbing the canyons can add thousands of feet more. If you travel to a higher altitude to ride, or if you have friends visit from sea level, be cautious of overexertion early in the trip. Hypoxia is the deficiency of oxygen in the body, and one of the earliest effects of hypoxia is having impaired judgment - similar to mild intoxication. So money could be saved on Thursday night‘s Bike and Brews by (Photo of Jay Kirsch on the April quickly riding to 10,000 feet instead of going to the bar! Later effects Fool’s Day Ride; include mild headaches or slight disorientation, tunnel vision, nausea, taken by Rob Y.) and fatigue. Allowing acclimation time is wise, but drinking a lot of water during the trip can reduce some of the symptoms. Montezuma‘s Revenge is not only gastrointestinal; it‘s also an annual mountain bike race in Colorado at 14,000 feet, where there is an additional challenge of competing at a reduced oxygen level.

Avid readers (both of you) of Sciclysm Sense remember reading in a previous column that aerodynamic drag wastes a lot of energy at high speeds. At higher altitudes, the reduced air density also reduces the aerodynamic drag, so at high speeds this reduced drag can compensate for the reduced oxygen that is breathed into the body. The cycling world hour record has been broken four times in Mexico City, due to Oxygen – its ideal altitude around 7500 feet. The record breakers, however, ―Breathe. Breathe in the air‖ –Pink Floyd ―Dark Side of the Moon‖ were trained at altitude. You don‘t have to be a scientist to know that air is everywhere. Earth‘s atmosphere is mostly nitrogen and oxygen, with a little argon If done in moderation, the deficiency of oxygen can be used as a and carbon dioxide mixed in to keep it interesting. training tool. When your kidneys sense a lower level of oxygen, they release a hormone called erythropoietin that commands the bone Humans and other aerobic organisms obtain energy by bounding marrow to produce more red blood cells. This increases the oxygen- oxygen to hemoglobin which is carried in red blood cells. The oxygen carrying capacity of the blood that can serve as a natural stimulant then reacts with glucose (assuming you are well-nourished) to yield when the oxygen is restored by returning to a lower altitude. Just think energy in the form of Adenosine triphosphate or ATP. This process is of it as legal doping, without all the press coverage. Living in Utah is similar to what a carburetor in a car engine does, but without as much already a small advantage if you‘re competing somewhere at a lower noise and smoke. Carbon dioxide is a byproduct of this reaction that is altitude, but spending a couple weeks in the Colorado Rockies (or Park exhaled. City) can help produce more red blood cells. However, the required VO2 max is a measurement that describes a person‘s maximum ability acclimation and benefit time vary from person to person; from days to to transport and burn oxygen while exercising. VO2 max is reached weeks. Perhaps BBTC should invest some money in remodeling a when consumption of oxygen remains constant despite an increase in Goodyear with a training Velodrome inside the balloon!??! We effort. Some athletic training centers and hospitals have special could call it the ―Ped ‖. A cheaper solution would be to buy a facilities to measure your VO2 max. In the late 1960‘s, doctors norm baric chamber that maintains normal atmospheric pressure but understood the difference between aerobic training and strength with reduced oxygen, and have group sleepovers inside it. training, and it wasn‘t long Other factors can reduce the oxygen content of the air. If you can see after that the the air, it‘s probably not good for you! Carbon dioxide and worse yet, Jane Fonda carbon monoxide replace oxygen around automobile traffic, near a exercise forest fire, or during a strong inversion in the valley, so plan your videos came routes wisely. Pedaling lower gears at high cadences allows for more rapid (Photo: Doug Jensen as the blood/oxygen BIG BAD WOLF during delivery the Little Red Riding Hood because the Ride.) vessels are less constricted and for shorter periods of time. So gearing down and pedaling faster is not only easier on the knees, it‘s also aerobically more efficient. Luckily when we exert ourselves harder, our brain automatically commands our diaphragm to contract and relax faster so that more air is exchanged to and from the lungs.
