Investment Element of the 2010 Florida Rail System Plan 2.0 Current Freight Rail System and Services in Florida 2.1 Overview The Florida rail system is comprised of 2,786 miles of mainline track, which are owned by 15 operating line-haul railroads and terminal or switching companies, as well as 81 miles owned by the State of Florida. Florida’s rail system includes 2 Class I Railroads (CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Corporation), 1 Class II (Florida East Coast Railway), 11 Class III (Alabama and Gulf Coast Railway AN Railway, Bay Line Railroad, First Coast Railroad, Florida West Coast Railroad, Florida Central Railroad, Florida Midland Railroad, Florida Northern Railroad, Georgia and Florida Railway, Seminole Gulf Railway, and South Central Florida Express) and 1 railroad specializing in switching and terminals (Talleyrand Terminal).9 The largest operator in the State is CSX Transportation, which owns more than 53 percent of the statewide track mileage. In 2008, Florida’s railroads carried nearly 1.6 million carloads – 19 percent less than in 2006 – and approximately 83 million tons of freight, representing a 25 million ton (23 percent) decrease from 2006.10 During that year, railroads handled freight equivalent to roughly 5.0 million heavy trucks.11 Nonetheless, railroads continue to support thousands of jobs throughout the State and assist Florida’s industries to remain competitive with international and domestic markets for fertilizer, construction rock, consumer goods, paper products, processed 9 U.S. Class I Railroads are line-haul freight railroads with 2007 operating revenue in excess of $359.6 million (2006 operating revenues exceeding $346.7 million). -

Within a decade of his damningly pessimistic statement, the Wright brothers were routinely puttering through the skies above Huffman Prairie, pirouetting about in their frail pusher biplanes. They were there because, unlike Kelvin, they saw opportunity, not difficulty, challenge, not impossibility. And they had met that challenge, seized that opportunity, by taking the work of their minds, transforming it by their hands, making a series of gliders and, then, finally, an actual airplane that they flew. Flight testing was the key to their success. The history of flight testing encompassesthe essential history of aviation itself. For as long as humanity has aspired to fly, men and women of courage have moved resolutely from intriguing concept to practical reality by testing the result of their work in actual flight. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, notable pioneers such asthe French Montgolfier brothers, the German Otto Lilienthal, and the American Octave Chanute blended careful study and theoretical speculation with the actual design, construction, and testing of flying vehicles. Flight testing reallycame ofage with the Wright bro!hers whocarefullycombined a thorough understanding of the problem and potentiality of flight with-for their time-sophisticated ground and flight-test methodolo- gies and equipment. After their success above the dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17,1903, the brothers determined to refine their work and generate practical aircraft capable of routine operation. -

Cowart, May 12, 1932 Since the early 1900s, the U.S. military had been fascinated with the potential of lighter-than-air aircraft. Between the world wars, U.S. Navy built several huge, helium-filled airships. But despite years of experience in airship construction, the dirigibles were risky to fly and often dangerous to land. San Diego would be the scene of a landing tragedy in May 1932. The USS Akron was launched on August 8, 1931, after a christening by the president’s wife, Mrs. Herbert Hoover, at the Goodyear-Zeppelin plant in Akron, Ohio. At 785 feet long and 152 feet tall, the steel-framed Akron was the biggest helium-filled airship ever built. Only the German- built, hydrogen-filled Hindenburg was larger. Called the “Queen of the Skies,” the Akron was flying warship, protected by seven machine guns, and carrying a crew of 89 naval officers and men. Along with her sister ship, the USS Macon, the Akron was designed for reconnaissance--to be the “eyes” of the Pacific fleet. The Akron was also built as a flying aircraft carrier. A remarkable inboard aircraft hanger carried two Sparrowhawk reconnaissance biplanes. The airplanes could be lowered from the dirigible by a “flying trapeze” and then launched into the sky. -

Goodyear – civilian blimps Peter Lobner, 24 August 2021 1. Introduction Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company began their involvement with lighter-than-air (LTA) vehicles in 1912, when the company developed a fabric envelope suitable for use in airships and aerostats. The first blimps manufactured by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company were B-Type blimps ordered by the US Navy in 1917 for convoy escort duty. Goodyear (envelope supplier) and Curtiss Aeroplane (gondola supplier) produced 9 of the 17 B-Type blimps ordered. Goodyear also supplied the envelopes for some of the Navy’s 10 C-Type patrol blimps, which were delivered in 1918, after the end of WW I. Both the B- and C-Type blimps used hydrogen as the lift gas. In 1923, Goodyear teamed with German firm Luftschiffbau Zeppelin and created a new subsidiary, Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation. In June 1925, their Type AD Pilgrim (NC-9A) made its first flight and became Goodyear’s first blimp to use helium lift gas. Pilgrim was certified later in 1925, becoming the first US commercial airship. Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation filed a patent application for a nonrigid airship in September 1929, describing the objectives of their invention as follows: “This invention relates to non-rigid airships, and it has particular relation to the suspension of pilot cars or gondolas from the envelopes of non-rigid airships. The principal object of the invention is to provide a non-rigid airship in which the envelope and the pilot car or engine car are so constructed as to offer the minimum air resistance. Another object of the invention is to provide connections between the envelope and pilot car that are not exposed to the airstream for sustaining the weight of the pilot car, as well as stabilizing it against lateral or longitudinal movement.” 1 In patent Figure 1, the pressurized lift gas envelope (10) contains an air ballonet (12, for adjusting airship buoyancy) and a load suspension system for carrying and distributing the weight of the gondola (11) affixed under the envelope and the thrust loads from the with attached engines. -

Melillo – Please do no cite or copy without author’s permission “From Bone Valley to ‘Far Places’: A Global Environmental History of the 1919 Phosphate Miners’ Strike in Mulberry, Florida” Edward Melillo, Amherst College Introduction In her 1942 autobiography, Dust Tracks on a Road, writer Zora Neale Hurston vividly depicted the miners of Polk County, Florida, their “sweating black bodies, muscled like gods…. They go down in the phosphate mines and bring up the wet dust of the bones of pre-historic monsters, to make rich land in far places, so that people can eat.”1 Hurston’s narrative suspended readers between the immediacy of sinew and bone and the remoteness of the “far places” that reconstituted their soils with fertilizer from Florida’s phosphorus-rich fossil deposits. Among the sites where Hurston gathered folklore for the Works Projects Administration (WPA) in the late 1930s was the town of Mulberry, thirty-two miles (52 km) east of Tampa in Polk County.
