These guides suggest possible ways of presenting the aerospace material and are for the leader’s use. Whether you are a classroom teacher or an Aerospace Education Officer leading the CAP squadron, how you use these guides is up to you. You may know of different and better methods for presenting the Aerospace Dimensions’ lessons, so please don’t hesitate to teach the lesson in a manner that works best for you. However, please consider covering the lesson outcomes since they represent important knowledge we would like the students and cadets to possess after they have finished the lesson. Aerospace Dimensions encourages hands-on participation, and we have included several hands-on activities with each of the modules. We hope you will consider allowing your students or cadets to participate in some of these educational activities. These activities will reinforce your lessons and help you accomplish your lesson out- comes. Additionally, the activities are fun and will encourage teamwork and participation among the students and cadets. Many of the hands-on activities are inexpensive to use and the materials are easy to acquire. The length of time needed to perform the activities varies from 15 minutes to 60 minutes or more. Depending on how much time you have for an activity, you should be able to find an activity that fits your schedule. -

Knott 1 1 National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, United Kingdom 2 now at Farnborough-Aircraft.com, Farnborough, United Kingdom Abstract: On 15 October 1997 on the Black Rock desert, Nevada, Squadron Leader Andy Green drove ThrustSSC through a measured mile at an average speed of Mach 1.02 (763.035 mph or 1 227.986 kmph) to achieve the first supersonic land speed record. This paper presents the work carried out at NPL to develop a method of directly measuring the thrust of each of ThrustSSC’s jet engines. This was a safety-critical application, the thrust imbalance being monitored by the car’s computers and presented on a gauge in the cockpit. Without this thrust-measuring system, it is likely that the risks involved in driving the car would have been too great for the project to proceed. Its success has demonstrated the possibility of real-time direct engine thrust measurement. Keywords: Jet engine, thrust, measurement. 1 INTRODUCTION In 1983, Britain’s Richard Noble took the land speed record from the USA’s Gary Gabelich when he drove his Rolls-Royce Avon turbofan powered car, Thrust 2, at a speed of 633 mph / 1 019 kmph. In 1990, American Craig Breedlove announced his intention to build a car, ‘Spirit of America’, capable of over 700 mph / 1 127 kmph, prompting Richard Noble to initiate a project to build a British rival to be first through the sound barrier. -

ThrustSSC Supersonic Land Speed Record Car Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark Designation Ceremony, 15 March 2014 Coventry Transport Museum, Coventry CV1 1JD , UK 1 History of Land Speed Record for Cars 1898 Jeantaud Land Speed Record Car The Land Speed Record (LSR) for cars is a competition for 4- wheeled vehicles that aim to achieve the highest possible speed over either a measured mile or kilometre. Regulations of the Fédération Internationale du Sport l’Automobile (FIA) require that the speed is the average of two officially timed runs – one in each direction – and that the second run be completed within one hour of the first. The first World Land Speed Record was set in 1898 by Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat driving a battery-electric powered, 36 hp, 1400 kg Jeantaud on the road in Acheres Park near Paris, France. On 18 December 1898 he achieved a one-way record speed of 63.1 km/h (39.2 mph) for the flying kilometre. The record then went to Camille Jenatzy driving his own torpedo shaped Jenatzy at 49.2 mph on 17 January 1899. During 1899 the record went back and forth between these two battery-electric, chain-driven vehicles until on 29 April 1899 Jenatzy set the record speed of 105 km/h (65.8 mph) at Acheres – a record that would stand for three years. These early records were all set in France because it had long, straight roads that encouraged high speed racing. This road system was built by Napoleon in order to march his armies from one city to another. -

Em primeiro lugar sou fã de velocidade, acompanho diversos esportes que envolvem tal prática. Por outro lado a aviação é uma paixão de infância. Desde criança sempre pesquisei e admirei aviões, desde os primeiros protótipos até os ônibus espaciais. O trabalho deveria ser realizado em grupo de até três alunos, porém não encontrei colegas dispostos a trabalhar neste tema. Por este motivo, com o apoio do professor, resolvi desenvolvê-lo sozinho, o que me proporcionou conhecer melhor um pouco da história da aviação, falar sobre a corrida espacial, e pesquisar sobre a história dos recordes de velocidade em terra, até a construção do primeiro carro supersônico, o único já construído. As próximas páginas deste trabalho apresentam a compilação de alguns meses de pesquisa sobre ciência, tecnologia, história, política, e sonhos, realizados por homens que pensavam a frente de suas sociedades. -

STEVE FOSSETT ABSOLUTE LAND SPEED RECORD CAR ENTIRE PROJECT FOR SALE Developed from landspeed legend Craig Breedlove's promising 1996 - 1997 'Spirit of America - Sonic Arrow' by the late Steve Fossett's Reno, Nevada-based team during 2006 - 2007. Fossett purchased the un-fulfilled project in July, 2006 from Breedlove with an initial record target speed of 800 mph, with eventual development planned for speeds of 900 mph+. The ‘Target 800 mph’ team was nearing testing phase at Bonneville, Utah or the dry lakes of California when Steve was killed in the crash of his light aircraft in September, 2007. Initial record runs were planned for a dry lake in northern Nevada in spring, 2008. A logistical exercise for loading, transport, assembly etc was conducted by the team on the Black Rock Desert in October, 2007. That is the source of the attached photos (all images © Stuart Radnofsky / Project 100 - 2007). Further engine tests / team exercises were conducted in early 2008 at El Mirage before the project was eventually shut down, with all elements carefully packed and mothballed in mid-2008. The car has been rebuilt and re-wired from the ground up wi th a longer wheelbase, wider track and modified aerodynamics, including lengthened wheel covers and parachute assembly and no dorsal fin. The braking parachute and its deployment system were also completely re-designed. FOR SALE We are selling the complete project outright. Included in the sale will be the car plus all designs and drawings, data and other documentation, all workshop and operations elements, including special tools and jigs, extensive spares, custom loading and assembly hardware, modified race transporter trailer and tractor, catering transporter and tractor, pickup truck and more. -

As aircraft speeds gradually increased over time, the power needed to overcome the aerodynamic inefficiencies of the propeller to greater speeds and altitudes were quickly realized as a hindrance to the potential of aircraft. -
