For a tour, I would reccomend the two hour tours given by Philadelphia & the Pennsylvania Dutch Country Mennonite Information Center www. A Mennonite guide rides in your car guiding you to three backroads Amish businesses or shops. Since the tour is just your family it can be customized to your interests. If you don't have two hours to spare on your drive through, the quickest self drive tour would be to drive Route Northwest from Route 30 in Gap to either Route orif you have more time Route in Lititz. This is mostly through Amish and Mennonite farmland. There will be farmstands open except Sunday, of Course and you will pass many Philadelphia & the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The Pennsylvania Dutch Pennsilfaanisch-Deitschalso referred to as the Pennsylvania Germansare a cultural group formed through those who emigrated primarily from the territory in Europe now within modern-day Germanyand also smaller groups from the NetherlandsSwitzerland and France. The word Deitsch corresponds with the High German word Deutsch in standard GermanPhiladelphia & the Pennsylvania Dutch Country "German", and is how the first settlers would have described themselves in the principal dialect spoken: Palatine German. Most of these settlers emigrated in the 17th and 18th centuries to America and spoke unique dialects within the family, but it is through their cross- dialogue interaction and what was retained by subsequent generations that a Philadelphia & the Pennsylvania Dutch Country dialect emerged, known as Pennsylvania German or Pennsylvania Dutch, which has resonance to this day.
