Tagore Pace University: Pforzheimer Honors College One Pace Plaza New York, NY 10038 May 2014 Criminal Justice Professor Clock History Advisor Signature Page Abstract This paper examines the economic and social reasons that are attributed to the high emigration rate in Ireland and in Germany during the nineteenth century, and how the lives of these groups turned out in the United States. As a result of economic deterioration and social inequality, pessimism became prevalent in Ireland from the 1840s onward and in Germany from the 1830s onward. Because the United States was perceived as an optimistic avenue for advancement, thousands of Irish and Germans emigrated their homelands and fled to America in search of a better life. -

Schatz Nancy Sullivan Metropolitan State College Texas A&M University- of Denver Corpus Christi Beverly Flanigan Autumn Black Ohio University Metropolitan State College of Denver Abstract The research investigated predictors of and reasons for people’s attitudes toward English Language Legislation (ELL) in the United States. Survey responses of 660 participants from South Texas, Colorado, and Ohio were examined. Regression analysis of demographic/background factors indicated that Hispanic ethnicity, Spanish-English bilingual language background, and political conservatism were independent predictors of ELL support. The relationship between strength of ethnic identification and ELL attitudes was mediated by respondents’ ethnicity: Increased ethnic identification was associated with support for ELL among European-Americans but with opposition to ELL among Hispanic-Americans. National (U.S.) attachment, most notably concern for the U.S. flag, also predicted pro-ELL attitudes. Further, in support of the “backlash hypothesis,” higher levels of ELL support among European-Americans were found in the region with the highest proportion of Hispanic residents (South Texas) than in the region with the lowest (Ohio). Pro- and anti-ELL respondents’ importance ratings of reasons for their position roughly paralleled the findings of previous research by Sullivan and Schatz (1999). In addition, ethnic differences in these ratings were more pronounced among ELL opponents than among ELL proponents. These findings are discussed within the context of the predictors and underlying motivations of people’s attitudes toward ELL. 121 Intercultural Communication Studies XI: 4 2002 Schatz, Sullivan, Flanigan and Black The status of English in the United States has been debated for over a century. -

BEYER* rHE distinctive role wxhich the Pennsylvania Gertmans have TjIaved within the Keystone State since their arrival in thli late seve nteenith and eighteenth centuries is well known. As a group. of course, these people have never forsaken their original Amer- ican homeland, and vet individuals among them were longl conspic- llonlS in the movement of settlers to other parts of the countrys . This migration out of Pennsylvania began well before the Amer- ican Revolution, with Germans moving into Maryland as early as 1729 and into Virginia and the Carolinas in succeeding decades. Before the end of the eighteenth century, scattered settlements were planted in other parts of the East. As the years passed, Pennsylvania Germans also contrihuted notably to the peopling of the Middle and Far W\est. Considerable numbers of themil made their way into northern Ohio following the Revolutionary WVar, w ith some continuing on into Indiana. These states as well as Illinois received particularly large numbers of Pennsyl vania Ge"- uanl immigrants Luring the early part of the nineteenth century as did Iowa and Kansas in the several decades prior to 1890. Two other states, Oklahoma and California, attracted later settlers.' Although the immigration of Pennsylvania Germans did not occur as early in Kansas as it did in some states to the east, the story of the Kansas immigration is all extremely interesting one. MAIr. Despite similar economic conditions, they were not treated as blacks legally, politically, or culturally.1 That is not to say that they escaped discrimination, nor does it minimize their suffering in the Great Famine of the s as they fled from death and disease. Rather, this essay points out that the respective sufferings—and tri- umphs—of nineteenth-century Irish Americans and African Amer- icans were different. From their arrival in the United States, Irish Americans suffered various forms of cultural prejudices that were expressed in caricature representations, but they were protected from the legal discrimination facing African Americans. Whiteness did not automatically confer freedom from repression and discrim- ination, nor did repression and discrimination automatically confer a designation of nonwhiteness or blackness. *The research for this project was funded by the generosity of the Caroline and Erwin Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon. Culture, Coercion, and Patriotism: the German-American Experience in San Francisco During World War I
CULTURE, COERCION, AND PATRIOTISM: THE GERMAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO DURING WORLD WAR I Marcus L. Bacher N July 15, 1914, a German naval cruiser, the Nürnberg, sailed from Q Mexican waters into the port of San Francisco. That evening, fifteen of the ship’s officers attended a banquet joined by San Francisco Mayor James Roiph and sixty prominent San Francisco Germans at the Saint Francis Hotel, to toast the Kaiser, President Woodrow Wilson, and the Nürnberg. The following day the front page of the California Staats Zeitung read, “City representatives and Germans warmly welcome the cruiser Nurnberg” and featured a picture of the warship and its captain, Commander von Schonberg. Over the following days, local German organizations like the German singing society and the German-American League of San Francisco entertained and celebrated the ship’s officers and crew, sang the German national anthem and the “Star Spangled Banner,” and exchanged toasts offriendship between the two nations in what the San Francisco Chronicle summarized as a “brilliant reception.” Three weeks later, American-German relations splintered as Germany became embroiled in war with England, France, and Russia.’ This paper is an examination of a period when international affairs had radical domestic impact. The First World War and the perceived belligerence ofthe German Empire produced a domestic hysteria against German Americans. A broad cross-section of Americans attacked their patriotism and loyalty and sought to restrict and marginalize their culture. Such widespread hatred directed against them was something entirely new to most of the German population. Since colonial times, German immigrants and German Americans had been one of the most diverse and influential non-English speaking ethnic groups in the U.S. -

Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -
Ganesh Sitaraman's Idealized American History
GANESH SITARAMAN’S IDEALIZED AMERICAN HISTORY DAVID LYONS A popular theme among patriots is to celebrate America’s special virtues, which distinguish it radically from European models. Ganesh Sitaraman tells us that political constitutions have generally been designed to prevent socially destabilizing class warfare between the rich, who seek greater domination, and the poor, who would like to redistribute the former’s wealth. America’s Constitution is distinctive because it was consciously designed for a society in which the middle class is large enough to preserve social stability. That is why Sitaraman calls it a “middle-class constitution.” Sitaraman credits the Founders with understanding that America was capable of avoiding class warfare and its consequences. They understood that the young nation was blessed with “economic equality,” which for present purposes means a middle class large and strong enough to maintain a balance of political power. America’s Constitution was designed to exploit and preserve that equilibrium. But the Founders did not anticipate developments that would challenge the viability of their design, not least the displacement of independent farmers (who are counted here as “middle class”) by low-wage factory workers and their affluent employers. Today, as has happened in past eras, America’s political system faces a compound crisis: America’s increasingly concentrated wealth distorts its electoral system, and its greatly intensified inequality prevents the shrinking middle class from performing its constitutional function. America, accordingly, faces the prospect of open class warfare, from which will emerge an oppressive oligarchy comprising the wealthy elite, perhaps followed by a bloody revolt by the poor. -

chapter 3 Immigrant Languages and Education Wisconsin’s German Schools antje petty n the second half of the nineteenth century, the Wisconsin land- scape was dotted with public, private, and parochial schools where I children and grandchildren of immigrants were taught in German, Norwegian, Polish, or other older immigrant languages that are de - scribed in chapter 2. Today, the language of instruction in Wisconsin schools is almost exclusively English, but the state still has large immi- grant communities with families who speak Hmong or Spanish (chap- ters 8 and 9), and the question of how to teach immigrant children is as current as it was 100 or 150 years ago. While the languages have changed, basic issues remain: Should Wisconsin children be taught in English only, in their native tongue, or in a bilingual setting? How im - portant is the language of instruction for “quality education” and content learning? What role does the school language play in the integration, acculturation, and “Americanization” process? And how important is the language spoken in the classroom for the maintenance of ethnic identity and cultural heritage? This chapter explores the example of schooling among German-speaking immigrants and their descendants in Wisconsin, the largest non-English-speaking population in the state’s early history.1 Education patterns in some other language communities such as Norwegian or Polish were generally similar, although the popu - lations were smaller populations.2 Still smaller groups, though, such as West Frisians, who numbered only a few hundred, lacked institutional 37 38 antje petty support and infrastructure like church services or a press and did not have schools teaching their language. -

A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Thomas Postlewait, Advisor Professor Dorothy Noyes Professor Alan Woods Adviser Theatre Graduate Program ABSTRACT Throughout the United States, thousands of festivals, like St. Patrick’s Day in New York City or the Greek Festival and Oktoberfest in Columbus, annually celebrate the ethnic heritages, values, and identities of the communities that stage them. Combining elements of ethnic pride, nostalgia, sentimentality, cultural memory, religous values, political positions, economic motive, and the spirit of celebration, these festivals are well-organized performances that promote a community’s special identity and heritage. At the same time, these festivals usually reach out to the larger community in an attempt to place the ethnic community within the American fabric. These festivals have a complex history tied to the “melting pot” history of America. Since the twentieth century many communities and ethnic groups have struggled to hold onto or reclaim a past that gradually slips away. Ethnic heritage festivals are one prevalent way to maintain this receding past. And yet such ii festivals can serve radically different aims, socially and politically. In this dissertation I will investigate how these festivals are presented and why they are significant for both participants and spectators. I wish to determine what such festivals do and mean. I will examine five Dutch American festivals, three of which are among the oldest ethnic heritage festivals in the United States. -

Emerging Paradigms in Critical Mixed Race Studies G. Reginald Daniel, Laura Kina, Wei Ming Dariotis, and Camilla Fojas Mixed Race Studies1 In the early 1980s, several important unpublished doctoral dissertations were written on the topic of multiraciality and mixed-race experiences in the United States. Numerous scholarly works were published in the late 1980s and early 1990s. By 2004, master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, books, book chapters, and journal articles on the subject reached a critical mass. They composed part of the emerging field of mixed race studies although that scholarship did not yet encompass a formally defined area of inquiry. What has changed is that there is now recognition of an entire field devoted to the study of multiracial identities and mixed-race experiences. Rather than indicating an abrupt shift or change in the study of these topics, mixed race studies is now being formally defined at a time that beckons scholars to be more critical. That is, the current moment calls upon scholars to assess the merit of arguments made over the last twenty years and their relevance for future research. This essay seeks to map out the critical turn in mixed race studies. It discusses whether and to what extent the field that is now being called critical mixed race studies (CMRS) diverges from previous explorations of the topic, thereby leading to formations of new intellectual terrain. In the United States, the public interest in the topic of mixed race intensified during the 2008 presidential campaign of Barack Obama, an African American whose biracial background and global experience figured prominently in his campaign for and election to the nation’s highest office. -

A Nation of Minorities The USA is often referred to as the ‘land of the free’ and ‘the land of opportunity’. People of many races emigrated from their country of birth to start a new life. The USA was willing to take in people who felt they had to leave their native country. The vast majority of those who journeyed to America did so in an attempt to improve their lives and the prospects for their children. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these the homeless, tempest tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door. 3 ‚An American is somebody who came from somewhere else to become someone else‛ In 1900, the USA was a mixture of all nationalities of people, so much so that it has often been referred to as a ‘melting pot’. ‚The great melting pot of America, the place where we are all made Americans…where men of every race and every origin…ought to send their children, and where, being mixed together, they are all infused with the American spirit and developed into the American man and the American woman.‛ Woodrow Wilson, 1915. There are few places in the world not represented within America’s population.
