Tagore Pace University: Pforzheimer Honors College One Pace Plaza New York, NY 10038 May 2014 Criminal Justice Professor Clock History Advisor Signature Page Abstract This paper examines the economic and social reasons that are attributed to the high emigration rate in Ireland and in Germany during the nineteenth century, and how the lives of these groups turned out in the United States. As a result of economic deterioration and social inequality, pessimism became prevalent in Ireland from the 1840s onward and in Germany from the 1830s onward. Because the United States was perceived as an optimistic avenue for advancement, thousands of Irish and Germans emigrated their homelands and fled to America in search of a better life. -

Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -
Violence and the Sacred in Northern Ireland
VIOLENCE AND THE SACRED IN NORTHERN IRELAND Duncan Morrow University of Ulster at Jordanstown For 25 years Northern Ireland has been a society characterized not so much by violence as by an endemic fear of violence. At a purely statistical level the risk of death as a result of political violence in Belfast was always between three and ten times less than the risk of murder in major cities of the United States. Likewise, the risk of death as the result of traffic accidents in Northern Ireland has been, on average, twice as high as the risk of death by political killing (Belfast Telegraph, 23 January 1994). Nevertheless, the tidal flow of fear about political violence, sometimes higher and sometimes lower but always present, has been the consistent fundamental backdrop to public, and often private, life. This preeminence of fear is triggered by past and present circumstances and is projected onto the vision of the future. The experience that disorder is ever close at hand has resulted in an endemic insecurity which gives rise to the increasingly conscious desire for a new order, for scapegoats and for resolution. For a considerable period of time, Northern Ireland has actively sought and made scapegoats but such actions have been ineffective in bringing about the desired resolution to the crisis. They have led instead to a continuous mimetic crisis of both temporal and spatial dimensions. To have lived in Northern Ireland is to have lived in that unresolved crisis. Liberal democracy has provided the universal transcendence of Northern Ireland's political models. Northern Ireland is physically and spiritually close to the heartland of liberal democracy: it is geographically bound by Britain and Ireland, economically linked to Western Europe, and historically tied to emigration to the United States, Canada, and the South Pacific. -

No question or topic was too large or small for conversations that often carried on into the wee hours of the morning. Caley Horan, Eric Richtmyer, Tim Smit, and Aaron Windel will undoubtedly be lifelong friends, mahjong and euchre partners, fantasy football opponents, kindred spirits at the CC Club and Mortimer’s, and so on. I am especially grateful for the hospitality that Eric and Tim (and Tank the cat) offered during the fall of 2008, as I moved back and forth between Syracuse and Minneapolis. Aaron and I had the fortune of living in New York City at the same time in our graduate careers, and I have fond memories of our walks around Stuyvesant Park in the East Village and Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and our time spent with the folks of Tuesday night. Although we did not solve all of the world’s problems, we certainly tried. The Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica (1659) and the Irish Franciscan
THE THRENODIA HIBERNO- CATHOLICA (1659) AND THE IRISH FRANCISCAN COMMUNITY IN THE TYROL By Nienke Tjoelker This article focuses on Maurice Conry’s Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica (1659) and the Irish Franciscan community in the Tyrol. Conry's work is an example of many Latin works written by Irish exiled clergy on the Continent in the mid-seventeenth century. In this contribution, after outlining the authorial issues, a summary of the contents of the Threnodia is given and then placed in the context of the expatriate clerical Irish of the 1650s. The piece concludes with a section on contemporary reactions to itinerant Irish friars, mainly from within mendicant circles. The Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica, sive Planctus Universalis Totius Cleri et Populi Regni Hiberniae was published under the pseudonym of F. M. Mori- sonus, ordinis observantiae, S. Theologiae Lector, Praefatae Crudelitatis testis ocularis in Innsbruck, 1659. Although often mentioned by historians as an important source for our knowledge of the atrocities of Cromwell against the Irish in the 1650s, little research has been done into this work since Brendan Jennings published his edition of the work in 1947 with a short introduction.1 In this article, I will address the question of why this book was published in Innsbruck, and not in any of the more famous Irish centres on the conti- nent, such as Prague, Paris, or Louvain. The historical context of the Irish Franciscan community in the Tyrol (modern day Tirol in Austria, and Südti- rol and Trentino in Italy) seems to me a gap in the existing research on Irish exile communities on the continent. -

The Puerto Rican Cultural Exception When Gabriel García Márquez visited Puerto Rico recently, someone asked him why he had never written about the island. The Colombian Nobel Prize winning novelist smiled and paused for a second before responding. “If I told the truth about Puerto Rico,” he explained, “everyone would say I was making it up.”1 Indeed, the Puerto Rican experience is in many ways too outlandish , even for magical realism. Despite being a territory of the world’s largest exporter of democratic rhetoric, Puerto Rico does not function as a true democracy. [caption title]. Salem, Oh.: Homestead Print, [ca. 1850]. Broadside, 16 x 10¾ inches. A few short closed edge tears, light toning and foxing. Very good plus. A rare and striking abolitionist broadside from Salem, Ohio, the seat of the Western Anti-Slavery Society, and a small but important center of progressive movements through much of the 19th century. As suggested by their advertisement's headline, "Union with Freemen - No Union with Slaveholders," the members of the Western Anti-Slavery Society were radical Garrisonian abolitionists who believed the U.S. Constitution was fundamentally a pro-slavery document and therefore unfit to bind together a morally just nation. Formed in the mold of Garrison's New England Anti-Slavery Society (founded 1832) and American Anti-Slavery Society (1833), the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society first assembled in 1833 in Putnam, Ohio, and in 1839 moved its headquarters to Salem and became known as the Western Anti-Slavery Society. From 1845 to 1861 the Society published a weekly newspaper, THE ANTI-SLAVERY BUGLE, printed for the first five weeks in New Lisbon, Ohio, and for all subsequent issues in Salem. The text of the broadside, a printed blank form for advertising abolitionist meetings, reads in full as follows: "Union with Freemen - No Union with Slaveholders. ANTI-SLAVERY MEETINGS! Anti-Slavery Meetings will be held in this place, to commence on [blank] in the [blank] at [blank] To be Addressed by [blank] Agents of the Western ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY. -

Allen, the “Coloured Professor” of New York Central College at McGrawville.1 The engagement stirred their upstate New York community into a popular controversy, Iinciting letters of family disapproval, newspaper commentary, and mob violence leading to their forced, though temporary, separation. Alongside his personal account of their engagement and marriage, in The American Prejudice Against Color: An Authentic Narra- tive, Showing How Easily the Nation Got into an Uproar (1853), Allen also reprinted various letters and newspaper articles both in support of and in opposition to his and King’s marriage. This array of accounts show how Mary King’s white womanhood becomes a function of genre: in the various stories of her relation to Allen, King’s race and sexuality
