Robert Greene and the Theatrical Vocabulary of the Early 1590s Alan C. Dessen [Writing Robert Greene: Essays on England’s First Notorious Professional Writer, ed. Kirk Melnikoff and Edward Gieskes (Aldershot and Burlington, VT: Ashgate, 2008), pp. 25-37.\ Here is a familiar tale found in literary handbooks for much of the twentieth century. Once upon a time in the 1560s and 1570s (the boyhoods of Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Jonson) English drama was in a deplorable state characterized by fourteener couplets, allegory, the heavy hand of didacticism, and touring troupes of players with limited numbers and resources. A first breakthrough came with the building of the first permanent playhouses in the London area in 1576- 77 (The Theatre, The Curtain)--hence an opportunity for stable groups to form so as to develop a repertory of plays and an audience. A decade later the University Wits came down to bring their learning and sophistication to the London desert, so that the heavyhandedness and primitive skills of early 1580s playwrights such as Robert Wilson and predecessors such as Thomas Lupton, George Wapull, and William Wager were superseded by the artistry of Marlowe, Kyd, and Greene. The introduction of blank verse and the suppression of allegory and onstage sermons yielded what Willard Thorp billed in 1928 as "the triumph of realism."1 Theatre and drama historians have picked away at some of these details (in particular, 1576 has lost some of its luster or uniqueness), but the narrative of the University Wits' resuscitation of a moribund English drama has retained its status as received truth. -

If you have attended SMUNC before, I promise that this year will be even more full of surprise and intrigue than your last conference; if you are a newcomer, let me warn you of how intensely fun and challenging this conference will assuredly be. Regardless of how you arrive, you will all leave better delegates and hopefully with a reinvigorated love for Model UN. My own love for Model United Nations began when I co-chaired a committee for SMUNC (The Arab Spring), which was one of my very first experiences as a member of the Society for International Affairs at Stanford (the umbrella organization for the MUN team), and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Later that year, I joined the intercollegiate Model United Nations team. -

Despite similar economic conditions, they were not treated as blacks legally, politically, or culturally.1 That is not to say that they escaped discrimination, nor does it minimize their suffering in the Great Famine of the s as they fled from death and disease. Rather, this essay points out that the respective sufferings—and tri- umphs—of nineteenth-century Irish Americans and African Amer- icans were different. From their arrival in the United States, Irish Americans suffered various forms of cultural prejudices that were expressed in caricature representations, but they were protected from the legal discrimination facing African Americans. Whiteness did not automatically confer freedom from repression and discrim- ination, nor did repression and discrimination automatically confer a designation of nonwhiteness or blackness. *The research for this project was funded by the generosity of the Caroline and Erwin Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon. Violence and the Sacred in Northern Ireland
VIOLENCE AND THE SACRED IN NORTHERN IRELAND Duncan Morrow University of Ulster at Jordanstown For 25 years Northern Ireland has been a society characterized not so much by violence as by an endemic fear of violence. At a purely statistical level the risk of death as a result of political violence in Belfast was always between three and ten times less than the risk of murder in major cities of the United States. Likewise, the risk of death as the result of traffic accidents in Northern Ireland has been, on average, twice as high as the risk of death by political killing (Belfast Telegraph, 23 January 1994). Nevertheless, the tidal flow of fear about political violence, sometimes higher and sometimes lower but always present, has been the consistent fundamental backdrop to public, and often private, life. This preeminence of fear is triggered by past and present circumstances and is projected onto the vision of the future. The experience that disorder is ever close at hand has resulted in an endemic insecurity which gives rise to the increasingly conscious desire for a new order, for scapegoats and for resolution. For a considerable period of time, Northern Ireland has actively sought and made scapegoats but such actions have been ineffective in bringing about the desired resolution to the crisis. They have led instead to a continuous mimetic crisis of both temporal and spatial dimensions. To have lived in Northern Ireland is to have lived in that unresolved crisis. Liberal democracy has provided the universal transcendence of Northern Ireland's political models. Northern Ireland is physically and spiritually close to the heartland of liberal democracy: it is geographically bound by Britain and Ireland, economically linked to Western Europe, and historically tied to emigration to the United States, Canada, and the South Pacific. -

The Early Elizabethan Polity. Stephen Alford. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1998. xii + 271 pp. Though there has been a recent surge of interest from Hollywood regarding the life, times and events of the reign of England's first Elizabeth, from the excellent whimsical romance of "Shakespeare in Love" to the abominable and inaccurate "Elizabeth I", scholarly attentions paid to Elizabeth and her reign have been scant in most recent years. Indeed, the early years of the Elizabethan era have seen perhaps the least new scholarly activity as the new millennium approaches: the standard work on the formative years of the reign remains Wallace MacCaffrey's The Shaping of the Elizabethan Regime, published in 1967, and the standard biography of her Chief Minister, William Cecil, remains Conyers Read's 1955 work, Mr. Secretary Cecil and Queen Elizabeth, a work which also reinforced the traditional views of a Council rent by faction and Elizabeth as 'Gloriana', playing the factions off one another like a master violinist or puppeteer to gain "harmonious cooperation" within her realm, first proposed in this century by J.E. Neale's 1934 work. Queen Elizabeth.^ Even the standard revisionist views of Elizabeth and of her role in governance, Neville Williams' Elizabeth the First: Queen ofEngland, and Christopher Haigh's Elizabeth I, were published in 1968 and 1988, respectively.'^ Stephen Alford's work. King Henry II & Thomas Becket
Thomas a Becket and King Henry II of England A famous example of conflict between a king and the Medieval Christian Church occurred between King Henry II of England and Thomas a Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury. King Henry and Becket were onetime friends. Becket had been working as a clerk for the previous Archbishop of Canterbury. This was an important position because the Archbishop of Canterbury was the head of the Christian Church in England. Thomas Becket was such an efficient and dedicated worker he was eventually named Lord Chancellor. The Lord Chancellor was a clerk who worked directly for the king. In 1162, Theobald of Bec, the Archbishop of Canterbury, died. King Henry saw this as an opportunity to increase his control over the Christian Church in England. He decided to appoint Thomas Becket to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury reasoning that, because of their relationship, Becket would support Henry’s policies. He was wrong. Instead, Becket worked vigorously to protect the interests of the Church even when that meant disagreeing with King Henry. Henry and Becket argued over tax policy and control of church land but the biggest conflict was over legal rights of the clergy. Becket claimed that if a church official was accused of a crime, only the church itself had the ability to put the person on trial. King Henry said that his courts had jurisdiction over anyone accused of a crime in England. This conflict became increasingly heated until Henry forced many of the English Bishops and Archbishops to agree to the Constitution of Clarendon. -
Eleanor of Aquitaine and 12Th Century Anglo-Norman Literary Milieu
THE QUEEN OF TROUBADOURS GOES TO ENGLAND: ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE AND 12TH CENTURY ANGLO-NORMAN LITERARY MILIEU EUGENIO M. OLIVARES MERINO Universidad de Jaén The purpose of the present paper is to cast some light on the role played by Eleanor of Aquitaine in the development of Anglo-Norman literature at the time when she was Queen of England (1155-1204). Although her importance in the growth of courtly love literature in France has been sufficiently stated, little attention has been paid to her patronising activities in England. My contribution provides a new portrait of the Queen of Troubadours, also as a promoter of Anglo-Norman literature: many were the authors, both French and English, who might have written under her royal patronage during the second half of the 12th century. Starting with Rita Lejeune’s seminal work (1954) on the Queen’s literary role, I have gathered scattered information from different sources: approaches to Anglo-Norman literature, Eleanor’s biographies and studies in Arthurian Romance. Nevertheless, mine is not a mere systematization of available data, for both in the light of new discoveries and by contrasting existing information, I have enlarged agreed conclusions and proposed new topics for research and discussion. The year 2004 marked the 800th anniversary of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s death. An exhibition was held at the Abbey of Fontevraud (France), and a long list of books has been published (or re-edited) about the most famous queen of the Middle Ages during these last six years. 1 Starting with R.
