Tagore Pace University: Pforzheimer Honors College One Pace Plaza New York, NY 10038 May 2014 Criminal Justice Professor Clock History Advisor Signature Page Abstract This paper examines the economic and social reasons that are attributed to the high emigration rate in Ireland and in Germany during the nineteenth century, and how the lives of these groups turned out in the United States. As a result of economic deterioration and social inequality, pessimism became prevalent in Ireland from the 1840s onward and in Germany from the 1830s onward. Because the United States was perceived as an optimistic avenue for advancement, thousands of Irish and Germans emigrated their homelands and fled to America in search of a better life. -

Their repatriation has become an infamous episode in Mexican-American history, since public campaigns arose in certain locales to prompt persons of Mexican origin to leave. Antagonism toward immigrants appeared in many countries as unemployment spread during the Great Depression, as witnessed in the violent expulsion of the Chinese from northwestern Mexico in 1931 and 1932.1 In the United States, restriction on European immigration had already been achieved through the 1920s quota laws, and outright bans on categories of Asian immigrants had been in place since the 19th century. The mass immigration of Mexicans in the 1920s—in large part a product of the success of restrictionist policy—had made Mexicans the second largest and newest immigrant group, and hostility toward them rose across that decade.2 Mexicans became a target for nativism as the economic collapse heightened competition for jobs and as welfare costs and taxes necessary to pay for them rose. Still, there were other immigrants, including those from Canada, who received substantially less criticism, and the repatriation campaigns against Mexicans stand out in several locales for their virulence and coercive nature. Repatriation was distinct from deportation, a federal process. -

Despite similar economic conditions, they were not treated as blacks legally, politically, or culturally.1 That is not to say that they escaped discrimination, nor does it minimize their suffering in the Great Famine of the s as they fled from death and disease. Rather, this essay points out that the respective sufferings—and tri- umphs—of nineteenth-century Irish Americans and African Amer- icans were different. From their arrival in the United States, Irish Americans suffered various forms of cultural prejudices that were expressed in caricature representations, but they were protected from the legal discrimination facing African Americans. Whiteness did not automatically confer freedom from repression and discrim- ination, nor did repression and discrimination automatically confer a designation of nonwhiteness or blackness. *The research for this project was funded by the generosity of the Caroline and Erwin Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon. Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -

The Puerto Rican Cultural Exception When Gabriel García Márquez visited Puerto Rico recently, someone asked him why he had never written about the island. The Colombian Nobel Prize winning novelist smiled and paused for a second before responding. “If I told the truth about Puerto Rico,” he explained, “everyone would say I was making it up.”1 Indeed, the Puerto Rican experience is in many ways too outlandish , even for magical realism. Despite being a territory of the world’s largest exporter of democratic rhetoric, Puerto Rico does not function as a true democracy. Robert Morris (1823-82) was the second African Amer- ican to pass the bar exam in the United States. An ardent abolitionist, during the 1840s he was the only practicing black lawyer in Boston. In 1849 he represented Ben- jamin Roberts, whose daughter had been denied entry to the white public schools. Charles Sumner eventu- ally argued this case before the Massachusetts Supreme Court. During the 1850s Morris participated in three daring rescues of fugitive slaves who were being held in custody for return to the South. After the Civil War he converted to Catholicism, which was then dominated by the Irish. Both before and after the war a majority of Morris’ clients were Irish. Sin embargo, conforme profundizamos en las raíces históricas, sociológicas y políticas de la llegada y asentamiento de irlandeses y mejicanos a Estados Unidos es posible comprobar que ambos modelos no son tan distintos. En uno y otro caso se reproducen comportamientos similares en aspectos relativos a por qué emigraron, a los patrones de asentamiento, las complejas relaciones con el grupo hegemónico, o los sistemas de autoprotección. Nowadays it is possible to find important differences between both groups that could lead to think that in both cases the migratory experience responded to different patterns. However, as we empirically analyze the historical, sociological, and political roots of the arrival and settlement of Irish and Mexicans in the United States, it is possible to verify that the two models are not so different. -
