Like all ethnic minorities, they went through a process of change in relationship to the dominant English-speaking society in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This sequential process (i.e., full ethnic retention, adaptation, acculturation, and amalgamation) is reflected in the Pennsylvania Dutch tune and chorale books that supported various stages of this evolution, depending on location and editor. Details of each music publication between the 1790s and 1850 contributed to this change linguistically, theologically, and musicologically through their content and appearance. Books that supported and promoted full ethnic retention retained the German language entirely, had a simple preface outlining the purpose of the book, employed a pure European repertoire, utilized unrealized figured bass or a harmonization on three staves, were printed from engraved or punched plates, and sought to retain German theology from the Reformation era. Some later examples of retention were not produced for ethnic reasons, but for theological reasons that resulted in the retention of traits of European chorale books. Tune books participating in ethnic change moved away from the use of the German language and European repertoire. They employed singing-school introductions and were resultant of the type-set printing process. iv Assimilating publications embraced revivalist theology and a type of consumerism that made the books and their users look more like their English-language equivalents than their European predecessors. All the while, Pennsylvania Dutch culture and all of its peculiarities were disappearing. It thereby provides the chronological extension to an existing line of studies that evaluate the production and reception of German-English literary translations in the second half of the twentieth century: notably, the survey volumes by Uta Kreuter (1985), Mark Rectanus (1990a) and, more recently, Wiebke Sievers (2007) who concludes her assessment period in 1999. Continuing the investigation into the twenty-first century, the present thesis combines research into new developments in selected focal territories – Germany, the UK and US – with an enquiry into the contemporary relevance of political and other borders in the circulation of German-English translated books. It thus offers an up-to-date account of activities for German-English translation in these territories; at the same time, it contributes to sociologically oriented scholarship on a methodological and theoretical level.

    Bach’s St. John Passion Day Eight: Bach and Coldplay Eric Osborne, 2021 Amanda laughed at me one day when I mentioned I was listening to Coldplay for the first time. I had to admit, it was something that I hadn’t done before that in 41 years on this planet. Standing there in her kitchen, she then proceeded to ask me if I had listened to other popular music (I didn’t know the song Africa by Toto). I admit, being a classically trained musician sometimes our listening experience is a little limited. However I am making up for it now. You may ask what Coldplay might have to do with Bach, and in particular the St. John Passion. One of my favourite hymns (and I have many) is My song is love unknown. The text is by Samuel Crossman (1623-1683) and music by John Ireland (1879-1962). In my experience as a choir boy and as a church musician, it was usually sung on Palm Sunday as the offertory hymn. The tune was written on the back of a menu during a lunch in 1925 between the composer and Geoffrey Shaw. The composition of the melody took less than fifteen minutes. The Ireland tune, is credited with taking the hymn from obscurity and bringing it into mainstream congregational song. Of the six verses, I’m selecting two for the purpose of this reflection: My song is love unknown, My Saviour’s love to me; Love to the loveless shown, That they might lovely be. O who am I, That for my sake My Lord should take Frail flesh and die? Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, He gave the blind their sight, Sweet injuries! Yet they at these Themselves displease, and ’gainst Him rise.

Or more simply: who lulled the remaining Jews in contemporary German culture and why? Why is it not possible to speak about "German-Jews" in the contemporary criticism about German culture? And, more to the point, what is the impact of this denial on those who (quite often ambivalently) see (or have been forced to see) themselves as "Germans" and "Jews," but not as both simultaneously.

As a group. of course, these people have never forsaken their original Amer- ican homeland, and vet individuals among them were longl conspic- llonlS in the movement of settlers to other parts of the countrys . This migration out of Pennsylvania began well before the Amer- ican Revolution, with Germans moving into Maryland as early as 1729 and into Virginia and the Carolinas in succeeding decades. Before the end of the eighteenth century, scattered settlements were planted in other parts of the East. As the years passed, Pennsylvania Germans also contrihuted notably to the peopling of the Middle and Far W\est. Considerable numbers of themil made their way into northern Ohio following the Revolutionary WVar, w ith some continuing on into Indiana. These states as well as Illinois received particularly large numbers of Pennsyl vania Ge"- uanl immigrants Luring the early part of the nineteenth century as did Iowa and Kansas in the several decades prior to 1890. Two other states, Oklahoma and California, attracted later settlers.' Although the immigration of Pennsylvania Germans did not occur as early in Kansas as it did in some states to the east, the story of the Kansas immigration is all extremely interesting one. MAIr. Therefore it was suggested lately to use the word „negationism“ instead. How- ever in the author‘s point of view „revisionism“ covers some more topics than just the denying of the National Socialist mass murders. Especially in Germany and Austria there are some more points of National Socialist politics some people have tried to minimize or apologize since 1945, e. g. the responsibility for World War II, the attack on the Soviet Union in 1941 (quite a modern topic), (the discussion) about the number of the victims of the holocaust a. s. o.. In the seventies the late historian Martin Broszat already called that movement „run- ning amok against reality“ (Broszat 1976). These pseudo-historical writers, many of them just right wing extremist publishers or people who quite rapidly turned to right wing extremists, really try to prove that history has not taken place, just as if they were able to make events undone by denying them. A conception of “negationism” (Auerbach 1993a; Fromm and Kernbach 1994, p. 9; Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz 1994) or “holocaust denial” (Lipstadt 1993, p. 20) would neglect the additional components of “revision- ism”, which are logically connected with the denying of the holocaust, this being the extreme variant.

CLARKE John Wesley’s “Directions for Singing” was included as an appendage to Select Hymns: with Tunes Annext (1761), a collection of hymn texts and tunes designed for congregational use across the Methodist Connexion.1 Although a list of only seven brief points, it reveals much about the way in which Wesley desired music to be used in Methodist worship and the ben- efits that he believed could be reaped from its effective use. Carlton Young suggests that the “Directions” represent “Wesley’s attempts to standardize hymn singing performance and repertory,”2 which is borne out by their pub- lication together with the tunes of Select Hymns, which Wesley advocated as authentically Methodist. The full significance of these instructions can only be understood when they are considered in relation to the theological and doctrinal position of Methodism, while they need to be assessed alongside Select Hymns and other collections of tunes used within Methodism in order to evaluate their impact. They highlight the importance Wesley attached to Select Hymns, while also offering more general practical advice, before con- cluding with a reminder of the purpose of congregational singing: That this part of Divine Worship may be the more acceptable to God, as well as the more profitable to yourself and others, be careful to observe the following direc- tions. The journal began in 1990 as The Quarterly. In 1992, with volume 3, the name changed to The Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning and continued until 1997. The journal contained articles on issues that were timely when they appeared and are now important for their historical relevance. For many authors, it was their first major publication. Visions of Research in Music Education will publish facsimiles of each issue as it originally appeared. Each article will be a separate pdf file. Jason D. Vodicka has accepted my invitation to serve as guest editor for the reprint project and will compose a new editorial to introduce each volume. Chad Keilman is the production manager.
