Resumes of Principal Researchers .............................................................................................. 66 3 SCHUYLKILL COUNTY ETHNIC HERITAGE STUDY EDITOR’S NOTE I was raised in a good Pennsylvania Dutch family on the eastern edge of Berks County. Through years of genealogical research I learned that my family had been in Maxatawny Township since before the dirt and that I was a 13th generation American. My grandparents’ voices were thick with a Dutch accent and we ate things like pig stomach stuffed with sausage and fastnachts, potato doughnuts fried in lard. There was nothing special about any of this; everyone around us did those things. All of my relatives, and all of their friends spoke with that thick, guttural speech, and I understood it just perfectly. Occasionally my grandparents would start speaking in this foreign tongue, usually only around their friends. They mostly reserved this for things like telling dirty jokes, discussing Christmas presents, and other things they didn’t want the children to understand. Either way, while foreign, this other language wasn’t strange. This was part of my life and everyone I knew shared something similar. I left for college on a sweltering August afternoon and arrived in Virginia to find that it really was hotter and more oppressive in the South. I was out of the truck no longer than five minutes when I realized that I had entered a very different world. It was a world filled with drawls, twangs, and surprisingly enough…tons of New Yorkers. Checking into the dorm, I was shocked to find that there was no one whose last name ended in –berger or –schitz and that I had a funny accent! I couldn’t believe it! Here I was in the heart of Virginia, and people told me that I talked funny. To my mind there was nothing unique about where I had come from. How could the way that I spoke, the foods I ate, and the way I lived my life be strange? It was at that moment that I realized that the place and the people I had come from were not strange…they were entirely unique. I spent four years in Virginia studying architectural history, culture, ethnicity, and geography with people who had worked all over the world. Somehow I fell in love with Pennsylvania and chose to write just about every research paper on something Pennsylvania Dutch-themed. When questioned about my apparent obsession with an esoteric topic like Pennsylvania Germans, I tried to explain where I was from and why I was studying this stuff in the first place. It usually ended in me referencing the Reading Railroad (as in the Monopoly game) or Allentown (like the Billy Joel song) or just generally being from “Pennsylvania Dutch Country.” Those references were quickly followed up with a Pennsylvania geography lesson and an explanation that Pennsylvania Dutchmen existed outside of Lancaster County. If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me if I was Amish, I could be living a very handsome life right about now. I was fascinated with the stories of religious persecution, fraktur, blanket chests, the farm life that I read about my forebears. This wasn’t an academic fascination, however. What made these things so compelling is that they were about me. Every one of the songs, recipes, building styles, and blanket chests was coursing through my veins. It was exhilarating and comforting to know where I had come from. I had a friend whose father was a colonel in the Air Force and she and her family had moved no less than 14 times between her 5th and 18th birthdays. When I asked her where her people came from, she replied “I don’t have any people.” Her family came from all over the place and yet no place in particular. She couldn’t identify a clear artistic or culinary tradition that she could call her own. I think secretly she envied the stash of family bibles, birth certificates, and photos I kept in the dresser drawer at my grandfather’s house. She wasn’t envious of them because they were precious antiques or artistic treasures. Rather, she was envious of them as symbols of a strong and unmistakable connection I had with my roots. They were from my people. So what then do my college days in Virginia and some old photos have to do with an Ethnic Heritage Study of Schuylkill County? Having grown up not far from the county line and spending many summers camping outside of Tamaqua, I knew Schuylkill County only as the place that made the engine in my dad’s truck groan as it climbed the hills with the camper in tow, that

Built in 1944, the monument initially represented the memory of the victims of the Lidice Massacre in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia while simultaneously symbolizing the patriotic efforts of the Phillips community during World War II. After the memorial’s rededication in 1984 the meaning of the monument to the community shifted. While still commemorating Lidice, the annual commemorations gave rise to the Phillips Czechoslovakian Community Festival held each year. The memorial became a site of cultural identity for the Phillips community and is

    CHAPTER FIVE Lithuanian Voices 1. Lithuanian Letters in the U.S. The list of American works featuring Lithuanians is short; it apparently consists of three novels. However, for such a small nation, not a “global player” in Franzen’s words, three novels authored by Americans can be seen as sufficient and even impressive. After all, three American authors found Lithuanians interesting enough to make them the main characters of their works. Two of those works, Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections, became bestsellers and popularized the name of Lithuania in the U.S. and the world. The third work, Margaret Seebach’s That Man Donaleitis, although overlooked by critics and readers, nevertheless exists as a rare token of admiration for an obscure and oppressed people of the Russian empire. Many other small nations never made it to the pages of American texts. The best they could do was to present themselves to Americans in their own ethnic writing in English. However, the mere existence of such ethnic texts did not guarantee their success with the American audience. Ethnic groups from Eastern Europe for a long time presented little interest to Americans. As noted by Thomas Ferraro, autobiographical and biographical narratives of “immigrants from certain little-known places of Eastern Europe . did not attract much attention” (383). He mentions texts by a Czech, a Croatian, a Slovakian and a Pole written between 1904 and 1941, and explains the lack of attention to them from American public: “the groups they depict remained amorphous in the national imagination and did not seem to pose too much of a cultural threat” (383).

    SOME NOTES ON THE STATE-OWNED COLUMBIA AND PHILADELPHIA RAILROAD* By HUBERTIS CUMMINGS r IGURATIVELY speaking, on the subject of the Columbia F and Philadelphia Railroad one could go riding off-as did the Leacockian hero-in all directions. If one could adopt and adhere to one line of travel for it, the journey might not be, according to twentieth-century ideals of railway convenience and luxury, very comfortable. The state-built and state-owned railroad between William Penn's great city on the Delaware and the river town on the Susquehanna long known as Wright's Ferry emerged from a dilemma, and it was its eventual destiny to be implicated in a fiasco. The course of its history was as multifarious as was its inception. In nothing is the tale of it simple. To cover the many- sided story in one brief paper, then, is impossible. For the connec- tions of the Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad with the policy of public improvements adopted by the Commonwealth of Penn- sylvania in 1826 are not only connections with the canal fever of that era in the Keystone State. They are connections with both the Erie Canal in New York State and with a whole epoch of American transportation history. Historians who trace the succession of events leading to the public system of transportation and travel which was owned by Pennsylvania between 1827 and 1857, usually tell much of Wil- liam Penn,' David Rittenhouse, Provost William Smith,2 financier and promoter Robert Morris,3 and Legislator William Lehman,4 as *Paper read at the meeting of the Pennsylvania Historical Association at Dickinson College, Carlisle, October 21, 1949.

As a group. of course, these people have never forsaken their original Amer- ican homeland, and vet individuals among them were longl conspic- llonlS in the movement of settlers to other parts of the countrys . This migration out of Pennsylvania began well before the Amer- ican Revolution, with Germans moving into Maryland as early as 1729 and into Virginia and the Carolinas in succeeding decades. Before the end of the eighteenth century, scattered settlements were planted in other parts of the East. As the years passed, Pennsylvania Germans also contrihuted notably to the peopling of the Middle and Far W\est. Considerable numbers of themil made their way into northern Ohio following the Revolutionary WVar, w ith some continuing on into Indiana. These states as well as Illinois received particularly large numbers of Pennsyl vania Ge"- uanl immigrants Luring the early part of the nineteenth century as did Iowa and Kansas in the several decades prior to 1890. Two other states, Oklahoma and California, attracted later settlers.' Although the immigration of Pennsylvania Germans did not occur as early in Kansas as it did in some states to the east, the story of the Kansas immigration is all extremely interesting one. MAIr. In our middlesession group, we will learn about the “Miracle on Ice,” try out feet at ice skating, figure out and play bandy and floorball, and possibly invent our own hybrid-sport! And we’ll eat some nice food! Eastern European Folk Dance and Song Trs. Heather and Jonathan Stand up and dance! Open your mouth and sing! Come learn a variety of folk dances from different Eastern European countries. From Macedonian line dances to Czech polkas, we will explore a wide variety of dance styles. To rest our feet periodically, we will learn some traditional songs from different countries in this region, as well as learning a bit about the different countries where these dances and songs originated. We will even have one or two workshops with local dancers and musicians! Eastern European Folktale Fun Trs. Maureen and Laurie Who are the Baba Yaga, Kikimora, and Vodyanoy? In this course, you’ll learn about these and other famous characters from Eastern European folktales. You’ll explore their stories, uncover what the stories reveal about Eastern European culture, and create your own folktale-inspired project. You could choose to create a board game starring Russian fairy tale villains and heroes, a graphic novel or movie adaptation of a Ukrainian folktale, or anything else you can imagine! We’ll also visit the University of Pennsylvania to learn from an Eastern European folklore expert.

Maxine Bruhns The Korean Heritage Room is inspired by Myeongnyundang, meaning the Hall of Enlightenment, the main lecture hall of Sungkyunkwan, the Royal Academy. It was built in 1398 during King Taejo’s reign of the Joseon (Korea) Dynasty in the capital city of Seoul. The Academy was Korea’s foremost institution of higher learning and produced many elite scholars. The building remains a prominent historic monument and reflects the beauty and harmony of the lines provided by traditional pine beams, pillars and countless rafters. All building materials, procured and crafted in Korea, were assembled in Pittsburgh by four Korean carpenters and painters whose specialty is tradi- tional Korean architecture. No nails were used in this Room, only wooden pins. In the center peak of the ceiling, two carved wooden phoenixes face the Female Phoenix, Pearl of Wisdom, Male Phoenix pearl of wisdom. On the south wall three documents explain the Letters and Principles of the Korean Alphabet. King Sejong invented this alphabet in 1446 and it became Korea’s official written language. The desks are made of oak and the chair frames are cast aluminum. In the 14th Century the teach- er and students sat on cushions. To the right of the chalkboard are two niches. The upper niche houses the ”Picture Book” of the Crown Prince’s matriculation written in 1817.
