Newport Street

Newport Street has altered significantly in the last 100 years. There were 41 properties here at one time. The Ship Inn, demolished 1978, gave its name to Ship Pitch which was the top half of Newport Street down to the Lamb Inn. Chain Alley was demolished sometime after 1861 and was then called Cats Park. This was later built upon. There was also another Gwynne Almshouse here. There was a row of cottages above the Lamb on Ship Pitch. The Mill Complex at the top of the street was redundant by the 1940's and was used from that time as a garage site. The railway ran along the riverside and there were a number of properties in that vicinity which have now disappeared.

Chain Alley - Newport Street

Chain Alley is the row of houses on the left.

They appear to have been numbers 1 - 13 Newport Street

By 1864 the Gwynn house and the adjoining property in Chain Alley had fallen into so bad a state of repair that for the time being the trustees appointed no new almspeople as the houses became vacant. (See Fairs p. 137)

The Lamb Inn - Newport Street

Regular auctions took place at the Lamb, such as the one on 27 January 1802 at the dwelling house of David Morgan, known as the sign of the Lamb Inn. In 1840 W. Maddy, landlord of the Lamb gave evidence to the Royal Commission about the state of the roads and tolls in Hay. The landlord in 1861 was a local man Charles Price, aged 24. In 1879 the landlord was Alfred Pembridge. By June 1881 he had been replaced by John Davies. Changes followed rapidly and by February 1882 the tenancy had been transferred to Lewis Evans, and by April the following year to Edwin Hathaway. In 1919 the licensee was Thomas Joseph Stokoe. On 1st November 1920 Arthur Tucker, the new landlord, was fined for permitting gambling. On 8 July 1931 Jack Coles was licensee in whose tenure it ceased trading.

The Ship Inn, 31 Newport Street

The Ship Inn was already in existence in 1815, when land was advertised to be sold by auction there. By 1846 it was a coaching inn with the Prince of coach leaving there every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings at 6 am. returning the same afternoon from Hereford at 4.45pm. In 1861 the landlord was John Farr, aged 49, who was also a pig dealer. In 1874 the owner was John Allen and the licensee Luke Jones. Mary Jones, possibly his widow, had taken over by 1891. By 1901 Mrs Allen was owner, the licensee being William Williams. The Ship was still licensed in 1910 but closed soon afterwards. The property was demolished in 1978 to allow for road widening.
