Sir David's grandson, Sir Henry Williams (d. 1652) was created a baronet in 1644. Sir David's grand-daughter, Elizabeth Williams, carried by marriage the Gwernyfed estate to Sir Edward Williams (d. 1721) of Eltham, who was descended from the Williams family of Talyllyn. However the family title did not pass with the estate, but went to Sir Walter Williams. The estate descended in the male line until the death without a surviving son of Sir Edward Williams in 1804. He had married firstly, Mary, daughter of Isaac Leheup of Gunthorpe, Norfolk. Gwernyfed was inherited by his daughter, Mary Williams. She married Thomas Wood of Middlesex, and their son, Thomas Wood (1777-1860) was M.P. for Breconshire, 1806-1847. The estate remained in the hands of the Wood family until it was sold in 1922. Powys LDP 2011-2026: Deposit Draft with Focussed Changes and Further Focussed Changes plus Matters Arising Changes September 2017 2 Powys Local Development Plan 2011 – 2026 1/4/2011 to 31/3/2026 Written Statement Adopted April 2018 (Proposals & Inset Maps published separately) Adopted Powys Local Development Plan 2011-2026 This page left intentionally blank Cyngor Sir Powys County Council Adopted Powys Local Development Plan 2011-2026 Foreword I am pleased to introduce the Powys County Council Local Development Plan as adopted by the Council on 17th April 2017. I am sincerely grateful to the efforts of everyone who has helped contribute to the making of this Plan which is so important for the future of Powys. Importantly, the Plan sets out a clear and strong strategy for meeting the future needs of the county’s communities over the next decade. By focussing development on our market towns and largest villages, it provides the direction and certainty to support investment and enable economic opportunities to be seized, to grow and support viable service centres and for housing development to accommodate our growing and changing household needs. At the same time the Plan provides the protection for our outstanding and important natural, built and cultural environments that make Powys such an attractive and special place in which to live, work, visit and enjoy. Our efforts along with all our partners must now shift to delivering the Plan for the benefit of our communities. Councillor Martin Weale Portfolio Holder for Economy and Planning

GUIDED WALKS & EVENTS SPRING 2019 Cymdeithas Parc Bannau Brycheiniog Brecon Beacons Park Society www.breconbeaconsparksociety.org GUIDED WALKS AND EVENTS SPRING 2019 (March-May) Most of these walks go into the hills. Participants are reminded that the following gear must be taken. Walking boots, rucksack, hats, gloves, warm clothing (not jeans), spare fleece, water and a hot drink, lunch, extra food and of course waterproof jackets and trousers. A whistle and a head torch (with spare batteries) should be carried, particularly during the winter months, and a hi- visibility garment would be very useful in case of poor visibility. Participants must satisfy themselves that the walk is suitable for their abilities. You can take advice by ringing the walk leader whose telephone number is given. No liability will be accepted for loss or injury that occurs because of taking part. An adult must accompany young people (under 18). MOST OF THESE WALKS ARE FOR EXPERIENCED WALKERS - IF YOU’RE NOT SURE OF YOUR ABILITY WHY NOT START OFF WITH A MODERATE WALK TO FIND OUT? Please check the guided walks programme on the website for planned cancellations and changes to walks. Leaders may change or cancel the advertised route at their discretion due to adverse weather conditions or other problems on the day. You are strongly advised to check the Mountain weather forecast for the Brecon Beacons National Park before setting out for walks, on the Met Office website: www.metoffice.gov.uk. Finish times are approximate. Strenuous walks require fitness and stamina to cope with several steep climbs and/or cover a good distance at a steady pace.

8 THE FAMILY OF L’ESTRANGE AND THE CONQUEST OF WALES1 The Rt Hon The Lord Crickhowell PC Abstract The L’Estrange family were important Marcher lords of Wales from the twelfth century to the Acts of Union in the sixteenth century. Originating in Brittany, the family made their home on the Welsh borders and were key landowners in Shropshire where they owned a number of castles including Knockin. This lecture looks at the service of several generations of the family to the English Crown in the thirteenth century, leading up to the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282. With its practice of intermarriage with noble Welsh families, the dynasty of L’Estrange exemplifies the hybrid nature of Marcher society in the Middle Ages. Two points by way of introduction: the first to explain that what follows is taken from my book, The Rivers Join.2 This was a family history written for the family. It describes how two rivers joined when Ann and I married. Among the earliest tributaries traced are those of my Prichard and Thomas ancestors in Wales at about the time of the Norman Conquest; and on my wife’s side the river representing the L’Estranges, rising in Brittany, flowing first through Norfolk and then roaring through the Marches to Wales with destructive force. My second point is to make clear that I will not repeat all the acknowledgements made in the book, except to say that I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the late Winston Guthrie Jones QC, the author of the paper which provided much of the material for this lecture.

  • WSA Water Quality Monitoring Update 10 Dec 2020
WSA Water Quality Monitoring Update 10 Dec 2020 It is now nearly 6 months since we began sampling Phosphate (P) levels in the Wye in the river. To date we have taken some 259 samples at 14 locations in the river & tributaries. Our team of volunteers has grown to 11 with the addition of monitoring the main river at Fawley. When lockdown and river levels permit we will install a water temperature monitor as part of our ongoing Temperature Monitoring programme at the same location. Whilst we are observing some interesting data on P levels it remains inappropriate to draw firm conclusions until we gather a more substantive volume of data from a range of conditions throughout the year. However, there are some initial interesting results that encourage more detailed investigations. I have attached our spreadsheet for information. If you wish a full ‘excel’ file for your personal study and analysis please email me at [email protected] Some of our data is being analysed by an undergraduate at Cardiff University, himself an angler. Beginning with basic mapping of the sites he will follow on to study temporal trends in phosphate and river levels. At first look he is beginning to observe trends between water colour and phosphate level which seems likely rainfall linked. He will use various techniques to produce visual representations of the spatial and temporal variations in water chemistry. More at our next update. In tandem with the usual phosphate checks for WSA, and in the aftermath of the most recent fish kill on the Llynfi, Gwent AS has invested in an ammonia checker which records NH3-N.
