High Town In this street there have been several changes to numbering. Numbers 15 and 16 were demolished between 1891 and 1901. Numbers 18 to 21 then became 15 to 18. Numbers 12 to 16 were part of Castle Street in 1861. In the 1851 Census High Town was called High Street and seems to have included Cranbourne Alley (now The Pavement). I can only identify (possibly) a few of the properties in the 1841 census. 1 High Town: Compton House: Oxfam & Goosey Ganders Grade: II Date Listed: 2 January 1988 Cadw Building ID: 7359 This is a listed building with 17th Century origins. In 1891 Henry John Stephens had a drapers and outfitters shop here. It later went to the Pugh family but remained as a gentleman’s outfitters that was reputed to be ‘quite reasonable’ price-wise. It was also a doctors surgery, with a Doctor Trumper in c1930. 1 High Town - 1861 Census - uninhabited 1 High Town - 1871 Census - uninhabited Compton House, 1 High Town - 1881 Census Henry Stephens, head, mar. 30, Draper employing 5 assistants, b.
