George House

Grade: II Date Listed: 2 January 1988 Cadw Building ID: 7356

An earlier eighteenth century house, sometime 'The George' and in 1907 'George House'. A two storey building with cellars and attics. It presents a symmetrical five window front to Church Street, behind a railed forecourt. This facade is of coursed rubble and the central doorway has a fine pedimented doorcase, with a dentil cornice and fluted pilasters. The crested gabled slate roof is framed by low end chimney stacks. A parallel rear range shows a broad central gable with an attic window. A two storey section connects with Radnor House (NPRN 16135) on the right and there is a single storey section on the left, with a passage opening onto the stable yard. The house retains some original details. A fine dog-legged staircase runs from the cobble-floor cellars to the attics. There is a narrow stable yard, with coach house, on the south-west side (NPRN 31311). The OS County series 1st edition (Brecknock. XVII.12 1889) shows some details of the large garden to the rear.

A three storey Georgian house set at the end of a short terrace, depicted on a map of 1847. There is a large rear garden. The house presents a symmetrical three window street front with a central doorway set in a hooded doorcase and approached by steps with iron railings. The walls are of coursed rubble under a slate roof with broad eaves. A parallel range was added at the rear after 1889. OS County series 1st edition (Brecknock. XVII.12 1889) shows the basic garden layout. On the street front north-east of the house, there was a yard with a range of outbuildings (NPRN 405947) ranged along the far side. These appear to have included a stable and carriage house.

Swan Hotel, Church Street

Grade: II Date Listed: 24 October 1951 Cadw Building ID: 7349

Listing includes: Swan Hotel, including Courtyard Buildings to Rear, Church Street

This Coaching inn is thought to have been built in about 1812, now a hotel. It is a two storey building, built of squared rubble, presenting a seven bay front to Church Street, above a plinth. The advanced central three bays are crowned by a broad pediment. The central doorway, flanked by fluted pilasters and topped by a broad, bracketed hood, is fitted with double doors. There is a hipped slate roof with broad eaves, punctuated by stone-rubble chimney stacks. A two storey rear north wing forms part of a large stable court to the rear (NPRN 31278). It terminates in a polygonal end flanking the entrance from Swan Bank. OS first edition County series (Brecknock. XVII.12 1889) shows a large walled garden to the south with pathways and trees. This layout appears to have remained substantially unchanged before the construction of a car park in the late twentieth century.

Originally called the White Swan probably derived from the badge of the Bohun family formerly Lords of Hay. The Swan was rebuilt as a coaching inn about 1812 but it had been popular since the 18th century, not just as an inn, but as a venue for auctions and a post and coach house.

In his 1771 will Edward Allen, a Hay solicitor, bequeathed the property - "... all that my messuage or tenement known by the name of the White Swan ... rented by the widow Minors."

On 11th March 1773 there was an advert "... to be let... the Swann Inn... held by Elizabeth Minors, widow.... " William Powell took the lease but Samuel Hill took over on 9 March 1775. In that year "Good Post Chaises and able horses with careful drivers to all parts of England from the Swan Hotel at the Hay". In 1778 is a notice that "the Hay Diligence sets out from the Swan Inn in the Hay every Wednesday at six o'clock in the morning to the Red-Streak in Hereford, and returns to the Swan the same day".

Thomas Morgan became licensee on 6 April 1796 followed by Joseph Ward from London on 7 April 1802. By July 1814 George Walton had taken over.

In Pigot's 1835 Directory the White Swan (and Posting and Excise Office) was occupied by William Spillman who was still there in 1861.

Swan Terrace

Swan Terrace - (numbers 1-4 down street on opposite side to almshouses) - probably had 22 to 27 Church Street on this space before 1881 numbering on from 21 Swan Bank up the street. This numbering and identification of the houses needs more research.
