The undersigned publishing and bookselling house issues from 1 November onwards: Breisgauer Bote. Intelligencer for the Grandducal districts of Breisach, Emmendingen, City and Rural district of Freiburg, Hornberg, Kenzingen, Staufen, St. Blasien, Triberg and Waldkirch. This paper is published three times a week, namely on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, each time one folio size (folded) page with an attach- ment for official and private advertisements. The paper is apt for such advertisements because it is subscribed by all communities in the above- mentioned districts, and just by this fact, every advertisement will certainly be widespread. The price for this paper for the months of November and December is 35 Kreuzer for subscribers living in Freiburg and for those who have it picked up by messengers in the publishing house. For the rest of the country the paper costs 40 Kreuzer, plus postage. All Grandducal post offices accept orders for it. Along with this, we are so free to direct the request to all friends of legal order and proceeding popular education to support us by reports from their radius of action and their experiences. We will always welcome leading essays and other apt articles, as a plentitude of opinions does support the discussion of the political and social conditions in our fatherland. We are assuring that we have succeeded in finding an editor who does not only match for such a difficult task, but also in attracting a consider- able number of excellent authors. Freiburg, 20 October 1849. Fr. Wagner, bookstore. Source: Advertising sheet attached to the Karlsruher Zeitung, 7 Nov. 1849 issue. Foreword Foreword 1. The making of this book

I first made the decision to collect the names in this volume almost 30 years ago, at a time when neither the Internet nor public databases of emigrants existed. Many American and some Australian genealogists had been searching for the exact town or village of origin of their ancestors who were known only to have come from the Grandduchy of Baden. Those genealogists wrote to societies, archives and the parish offices in the town of Baden-Baden, but could not get help without knowing a more exact place-name. Conversely, the old gazettes and newspapers in Baden are full of public no- tifications and advertisements concerning emigrants. These advertisements are hard to find, due to the fact that these papers have no complete indexes. Some of them just have annual indexes for the names of the quoted persons. So I started to look through the newspapers which served as a collection and kind of gazette of public notices in the Breisgau region. I then copied all entries about emigrants and absent persons into lists, destined eventually to be put together into a database. This project kept me busy from 1986 to 1989; and with the help of this documented data I was able to discover the origins of quite a few emigrants. Upon completion, it was clear to me that this material should be made accessible to a wider audience, and it is this which has led to the book now before you. The aforementioned database was initially only intended to provide clues to the original home community of the persons mentioned in them and to provide links to additional entries about these persons. Therefore, I had in most cases not noted whether it was a summons to a military person or his sentence or con- demnation for absence, and the same for missing persons. Such details were partially added in afterwards upon further study. As a general rule, the lists in this book are to be best considered as hints and springboards to primary sources where further details may be unearthed. The actual advertisements may include additional details such as personal de- scriptions of wanted men. Even more information may be found in case files which, it may be hoped, have survived in the archives.

The following volumes are in preparation:

1. The Breisgau region with the districts of Breisach, Emmendingen, Ettenheim, Freiburg, Hornberg (until 1857)1, Kenzingen, Staufen, St. Blasien (until 1844), Triberg (until 1858) and Waldkirch. 2. The Odenwald and Bauland regions with the districts of Adelsheim, Boxberg, Buchen, Eberbach, Gerlachsheim, Krautheim, Mosbach, Tauberbischof- sheim, Walldürn and Wertheim 3. The Ortenau region with the districts of (until 1864), , Haslach, , , , Rheinbischofsheim and . 4. The area around with the districts of Achern (from 1865), Baden-Baden, Bühl, Ettlingen, and Rastatt.

For all of these regions, all information in newspapers up to 1871 has been extracted. The imperial German law of 1 June 1870 concerning the purchase and loss of citizenship only authorised the authorities to prohibit emigration for military reasons. Therefore, the announcement of clearing of debts prior to emigration had to be omitted because this was no longer considered to be a valid obstacle for leaving the country. The remaining types of announcements (summons to missing heirs, search for absent draftees, and others) are assumed to be largely found in the Karlsruher Zeitung newspa- per after 1871.

2. Public announcements by district authorities in Baden

By the late eighteenth century, absent persons were sought after via advertisements in newspapers and intelligencers in the -Durlach2. Soon after 1800, this turned into a sophisticated system of public notifications by low-ech-

Vorwort 1.
