MISSION OF THE GOVERNOR WINSLOW SCHOOL

The mission of the Governor Winslow School is to provide a quality, equal educational opportunity for all students in a safe and secure environment of mutual respect.

Qualities for Success for Governor Winslow School Students

RESPECT- It is important for students to have respect for themselves, other children, and adults. Students need to listen to the voices inside them, the voices of other children, and adults. Respect is a two-way street. “If you respect others, you will receive respect in return.”

RESPONSIBILITY- Students need to be responsible for their words, their behavior, their assignments, and their learning. Growing up means doing and learning many things. “Learning is not a spectator sport.”

RESOURCEFULNESS- A resourceful student uses common sense, strategies, and good thinking. This student is creative, imaginative, and independent. Thomas Jefferson said that a student should “gain knowledge, reason, and show initiative.”

SELF-CONTROL- Self-control needs to be shown when listening, speaking, and doing. Self-control should be shown on the bus, in the cafeteria, on the playground, and in the classroom. “Think before you speak or act.”

CONFIDENCE- Confidence is the sense that you are more likely to succeed than not. Confident people have the courage to be themselves, and they can accept mistakes. Confidence comes from performance. “Confidence is born of demonstrated ability.”

PRIDE- Students need to have pride in and respect for their school, their community, their behavior, and their work. With regard to school work, each student needs to ask, “Is this my best?”

COOPERATION- Throughout the school day, students need to be patient, flexible, and understanding of others. Students need to “balance their own needs with those of the group.”

HONESTY- Studies tell us that if a child is regularly not telling the truth, he/she is in for a difficult time in the teenage years and beyond. Parents will never have a realistic view of their child’s life if the truth is not told. Children need to “tell the truth and admit their mistakes.”

WORK ETHIC- Students need to use time wisely, work hard, and work through frustration and difficulties. This work will develop pride, confidence, and self-esteem. “Hard work produces success.”

When You Have a Problem

The staff at Governor Winslow School is concerned about your school problems. Identifying the correct person to discuss your concern with is key to achieving a prompt resolution. Generally, the best place to start in finding a solution to your problem is at the source.

When your concern is about your child and his/her educational program, your first step should be to contact the teacher. If you feel the situation needs further attention, then call your building principal. The teacher and the principal, as trained professionals, are interested in the welfare of your child, and most problems can be satisfactorily solved at this level.

GENERAL INFORMATION & PROCEDURES

SCHOOL HOURS School begins at 8:20 AM and ends at 3:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Thursdays, school begins at 8:20 AM and ends at 12:45 PM. Please note that every Thursday is early release for the elementary schools for teacher planning, conferences, and staff development.

General office hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Office staff is on duty until all students are off the buses in the afternoon.

STUDENT MORNING DROP OFF GUIDELINES There is no adult supervision prior to 8:00 AM. Please do NOT drop your child off before this time.

The front sidewalk area of the building is reserved for bus arrival and departure in the morning from 8:00-8:30 AM and again in the afternoon from 2:30-3:00 PM. Student drop offs by car should take place on the sidewalk area next to the bike rack. Access to this area should be gained by circling the teacher parking spaces in a counter clockwise manner and by parking parallel to the sidewalk heading out of the parking lot.

For the safety of the students, turning around and/or dropping off or picking up children at the mouth of the driveway at the corner of Regis Road is NOT allowed. No parking is allowed at the mouth of the driveway from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM when school is in session. Please use extreme CAUTION when dropping children off in the morning. Be aware of the crosswalk in front of the drop-off area.

AFTERNOON CAR PICK UP Students being picked up from school will be dismissed at 2:50 PM (Thursdays at 12:35 PM) at the far end of the parking lot from the grades 3/4 wing door. All vehicles should enter the parking lot and bear right, head toward the playground area at the far end of our parking lot, and then continue to circle around to the door. Drivers should remain in their cars in single file. Staff will see students to their car, and children will enter through a passenger-side door. Once students are safely buckled, drivers will proceed forward, and then stop at the bike rack. After yielding to pedestrians and buses, vehicles will exit onto Regis Road. Parents are asked not to meet their children in the front lobby.

With student safety in mind, parking will not be allowed on Regis Road or along the circle in front of the school. Although parents are always welcome at Governor Winslow, dismissals from the front office/lobby should be avoided from 2:45-3:00 PM (Thursdays from 12:15-12:45PM). Please note that students are working until the end of the school day, and early dismissals are disruptive to their learning and the learning of others.

DISMISSAL CHANGES All children will go home on their assigned school bus unless the office receives a parental note that indicates your child will be picked up in the car line.

Please remember that students may only ride their assigned bus, and must get off at their assigned bus stop. Parents may not ask the bus driver to adjust their child’s bus stop. Please do not give your child alternate dismissal instructions, unless the school has been notified in writing and your request has been approved.

Bus changes are approved on a permanent basis only and the request must be received in writing a minimum of five days in advance. Once a permanent bus change has been approved, students may not switch back to their home bus on days that they are scheduled to go elsewhere. If there is a change, students must be picked up in the car line.

All permanent dismissal changes should be documented by completing a Dismissal Form indicating which days your student will walk, be picked up on the car line, or take a different bus.

PARKING The front sidewalk area of the building is reserved for bus arrival and departure in the morning from 8:00-8:30AM and again in the afternoon from 2:30-3:00PM. No parking is allowed at the mouth of the driveway from 8:00AM to 3:00PM when school is in session.

BICYCLES Children attending Governor Winslow School in grades 3, 4, and 5 may ride bicycles to school, except in bad weather. Parents or guardians giving their children permission to ride their bikes to school must fill out and sign a bike permission slip. Bike slips are available on the GWS website or at the front office. Signed permission slips will be kept on file for the entire year. Each child must be in compliance with state law requiring cyclists to wear helmets while riding bicycles.

SCHOOL VISITORS School exterior doors are locked at all times. Visitors must enter through the front door only. The office staff can see visitors on the security monitor and can speak to visitors via intercom. Please ring the doorbell, and we ask for your patience if you are requested to identify yourself before being permitted access to the building.

Upon entering the building, all visitors must report directly to the office to sign in and receive a visitor badge. The visitor badge should be returned when signing out. If it is necessary for a visitor to speak to a student or a teacher, office personnel will make such arrangements. Parents may not visit a classroom without prior approval.

PILGRIM EVACUATION The Governor Winslow School is located in an area that is scheduled for evacuation in the event of an emergency at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant. An evacuation plan is in place and is reviewed annually to ensure the safety of the school’s staff and students. If, at any time, evacuation of the building becomes necessary during school hours, all students will immediately be transported to the Furnace Brook Middle School with their teachers until their parents are able to come for them. It is critical to the success of this plan that everyone understands what the procedure is to allow for uninterrupted and smooth evacuation should this become necessary.

NEWSLETTERS The school communicates with parents via its weekly notice and monthly Principal’s message. These notices highlight upcoming events, important school issues, and school-wide events, as well as updates from our school organizations and general Marshfield community. Periodically during the school year, homeroom teachers send home letters and notes regarding classroom information.

Please be advised that in order to conserve resources, most communications will be sent electronically. The weekly newsletter will be posted online each Friday. A reminder email will be sent to parents as new data is posted. Printed copies will be available in the front office. Be sure to check the website regularly at www.mpsd.org/gws to stay informed of everything that is happening at GWS.

In order to reduce paper use and duplication, a FAMILY MAIL CARRIER LIST is compiled identifying one student per family to bring home paper notices. The oldest child in each family is the assigned mail carrier. Individual items such as classroom notices and permission slips will go home in the individual backpack of each student.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the school hours? GWS will be an early start school for the 2020-2021 school year. The school day will begin at 8:20AM and dismissal is at 3:00PM (12:45PM on Thursdays).

Do I have to notify the school if my child is going to be absent from or late to school? Yes, please call the school before 9:00AM if your child is going to be absent or late to school. If we do not receive a call, we will try to reach a parent or guardian with the Connect Ed System to account for your child (Safe to School Program).

Please note that a telephone call does not eliminate the requirement for a written absence note when your child returns to school. A physician’s note should be provided whenever applicable. Refer to the MPSD Daily Attendance policy in the Elementary School Handbook, page 12.

What is the earliest time I can drop my child off at school? There is no adult supervision prior to 8:00AM. Please do NOT drop your child off before this time. After 8:00AM, students will be supervised in the PA Room until the school buses arrive. (Please contact the office for information about extended day programs).

What if my child is late for school? The school day begins at 8:20AM. All students reporting late to school are required to be accompanied by a parent/guardian to the office to check in before going to his/her classroom. For student safety, be advised that there is no GWS staff stationed outside of the building after 8:20AM.

What if I need to dismiss my child during the school day? If your child is to be dismissed early from school, please send a note to the classroom teacher. This note will then be sent to the office. Parents or guardians need to come into the office to sign their child out in the dismissal book. Be sure to let the school know if someone other than a parent/guardian will be picking up your child. Proper identification may be requested. Your child will be called to the office when you arrive.

What if I need to change my child’s dismissal plan? All children will go home on their assigned school bus unless the office receives a parental note that indicates your child will be picked up in the car line.

If there is a family emergency, or medical situation, parents should notify the school principal and other transportation arrangements may be made.

All families should be familiar with the complete Transportation Policy which is available on the district website under School Committee- Polices or in the Elementary School Handbook, page 28.

What if I want to pick my child up at the end of the school day? Send a note to your child’s homeroom teacher indicating that your child should be dismissed to the car line. Please be sure to indicate if someone other than a parent/guardian will be picking up your child. Proper identification may be requested.

Students being picked up from school will be dismissed at 2:50PM (Thursdays at 12:35PM) at the far end of the parking lot out of the grades 3/4 wing door. Can a friend pick my child up from school? Please notify the school in writing if someone other than a parent/guardian is going to pick up your child. Proper identification may be required. Please note also that names listed on your child’s Emergency Contact Sheet are used for emergencies only. This form does not authorize these contacts to pick up your child at any other time without parental notification.

Can my child take the bus to a friend’s house? Students may not change buses or bus stops. Parents may not ask the bus driver to adjust their child’s stop. Please arrange to have the children picked up in the car line.

What if my child goes to the Boys & Girls Club after school? The Boys & Girls Club has arranged for a school bus to transport students from GWS to the club each day. Once you have signed up for transportation through the club, you must complete a GWS Dismissal Form indicating which days your child will take the Boys & Girls Club bus. Please note that this is considered a permanent bus change and students may not switch back to their home bus on days that they are scheduled to go to the club. If there is a change, students must be picked up in the car line.

When do I need to complete a Dismissal Form? The Dismissal Form is used to document any permanent changes to your child's regular dismissal plans, such as being picked up in the car line or taking the Boys & Girls Club bus. For parents who car pool, this form is also used to authorize someone other than a parent/guardian to pick up your child from the car line.

What if I am not able to send a note before school? Please call the school as soon as possible if a change is necessary. The teacher will be notified so that he/she can plan accordingly. Please make every effort to review any changes to your child’s dismissal plans with him/her before school and send a note to your child’s homeroom teacher. Phone calls during the school day interrupt learning in the classroom and may cause confusion.

How do parents stay informed about what is happening at GWS?  Be sure that the school has a current email address. Email notices are sent to families as new information is added to the school website.  Read the weekly school notice.  Check the GWS website regularly.  Sign up for the GWS PTO email database and family directory. Please note that this is an opt-in program. Families must sign up each year. The school does not provide family contact information to the PTO.  To conserve resources, GWS uses a “mail carrier” system when paper notices are sent home. The oldest child in each family will receive notices.

May I send in a treat for my child's birthday? Our staff prefers to conduct "healthy celebrations" that need not involve food, just fun. Please refer to the "Birthdays and Other Celebrations" guidelines on our website. Due to the current nutritional guidelines and a number of food allergies, you must speak to your child's homeroom teacher and the school nurse for approval before planning any celebrations.

How do I contact my child’s teacher? Please leave a message with the front office. Staff will make every effort to return your call promptly. It is up to each teacher’s discretion whether to communicate via email.
