  • Stoic Enlightenments
Copyright © 2011 Margaret Felice Wald All rights reserved STOIC ENLIGHTENMENTS By MARGARET FELICE WALD A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in English written under the direction of Michael McKeon and approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October 2011 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Stoic Enlightenments By MARGARET FELICE WALD Dissertation Director: Michael McKeon Stoic ideals infused seventeenth- and eighteenth-century thought, not only in the figure of the ascetic sage who grins and bears all, but also in a myriad of other constructions, shaping the way the period imagined ethical, political, linguistic, epistemological, and social reform. My dissertation examines the literary manifestation of Stoicism’s legacy, in particular regarding the institution and danger of autonomy, the foundation and limitation of virtue, the nature of the passions, the difference between good and evil, and the referentiality of language. Alongside the standard satirical responses to the ancient creed’s rigor and rationalism, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century poetry, drama, and prose developed Stoic formulations that made the most demanding of philosophical ideals tenable within the framework of common experience. Instead of serving as hallmarks for hypocrisy, the literary stoics I investigate uphold a brand of stoicism fit for the post-regicidal, post- Protestant Reformation, post-scientific revolutionary world. My project reveals how writers used Stoicism to determine the viability of philosophical precept and establish ways of compensating for human fallibility. The ambivalent status of the Stoic sage, staged and restaged in countless texts, exemplified the period’s anxiety about measuring up to its ideals, its efforts to discover the plenitude of ii natural laws and to live by them.

  • Agape and Eros: a Critique of Nygren
AGAPE AND EROS A. S. DEWDNEY O one can read Bishop Nygren's great work Agape and Eros without Ngratitude and much delight. This is one of those monumental works of which only a very few are produced in any generation and which help to clarify and mould the thinking of men everywhere. Agape and Eros are words which are here to stay in our theological vocabulary because they express the two great motifs underlying the more inclusive word "love". They enable us to distinguish these elements and to handle them with more precision and understanding of what they mean. All preachers and theologians have suffered in the past in attempting to clarify what is involved in the Christian idea of love, whether it is the love of God to man, of man to God, of man to his neighbour, or the meaning and place to be given to self-love. We now have a clear word for two aspects of what are commonly called love, and for this we must be forever indebted to Bishop Nygren's clear and searching analysis. He has helped us to resolve much of this ambiguity. Nygren distinguishes two types of love. One is the love of desire. It is the love which values and seeks to possess some good in its object. It is motivated by that good. We love that which is good, that is, that which is good for us. Such a love is self-centred. However lofty the object on which it places its love, essentially it sees that object as a good to be possessed.

  • Violence and Predation, Mainly in the Form of Piracy, Were Two Of
violence and predation robert j. antony Violence and Predation on the Sino-Vietnamese Maritime Frontier, 1450–1850 iolence and predation, mainly in the form of piracy, were two of V the most persistent and pervasive features of the Sino-Vietnamese maritime frontier between the mid-fifteenth and mid-nineteenth cen- turies.1 In the Gulf of Tonkin, which is the focus of this article, piracy was, in fact, an intrinsic feature of this sea frontier and a dynamic and significant force in the region’s economic, social, and cultural devel- opment. My approach, what scholars call history from the bottom up, places pirates, not the state, at center stage, recognizing their impor- tance and agency as historical actors. My research is based on various types of written history, including Qing archives, the Veritable Records of Vietnam and China, local Chinese gazetteers, and travel accounts; I also bring in my own fieldwork in the gulf region conducted over the past six years. The article is divided into three sections: first, I discuss the geopolitical characteristics of this maritime frontier as a background to our understanding of piracy in the region; second, I consider the socio-cultural aspects of the gulf region, especially the underclass who engaged in clandestine activities as a part of their daily lives; and third, I analyze five specific episodes of piracy in the Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin (often referred to here simply as the gulf), which is tucked away in the northwestern corner of the South China Sea, borders on Vietnam in the west and China in the north and east.

We have used a large, global planetary databas ein conjunc- tion with geomorpholog icmapping to identify craters superposed on the rims of 78 larger craters with Keywords: diameters D P 150 km on Mars, 78% of which have not been previously dated in this manner.
