(The Toast used by SKÅL International Cairns 1984 - 2002) FOREWORD Our home since the Cairns SKÅL Club was formed is Northern Australia’s top tropical tourist destination, sitting right on the Great Barrier Reef and amidst World Heritage Rainforest. Since the early 1920’s our fellow Australians started to find this tourist destination and the explosion of international visitors commenced in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s with the advent of more modern transport. Word got out of our big game fishing exploits, of ultra-modern fast cruise boats and their luxurious pontoons perched right on the reef for diving and snorkelling. Not forgetting the Daintree Rainforest and cape Tribulation, our naturally air-conditioned green pastures of Atherton Tableland, the unique geology and geography of our accessible outback, and gateway to Cooktown and the wildness which is Cape York. The completion of Cairns International Airport in 1985 was the catalyst for a tourism boom and related infrastructure for Cairns and nearby Port Douglas, which has continued to this day. Tropical North Queensland is now in the forefront of the Australian tourism industry. It was only natural that such a destination should witness the birth of a SKÅL Club in 1985. History of faraway places always makes enjoyable reading, and I am sure that what we offer you now in this publication will be most enjoyable to all. Yours sincerely, Sir Sydney Williams PATRON 1984 – 2003 (deceased) SKÅL INTERNATIONAL CAIRNS #530 To fellow Skålleagues everywhere, Happiness, Good Health, Friendship, Long Life, SKAL! Indeed it is the world’s largest travel and tourism association. Representing the industry’s managers and executives, SKÅL members meet at a local, national and international level, in an environment of friendship, to discuss subjects of a common nature and interest. Although SKÅL is not a business association, nor can it be used as a forum to conduct business, it does encourage SKÅL members to conduct business with other SKÅL members and supporters. The first SKÅL Club was founded in Paris, on 20 December 1932. Travel trade managers had recently been on an ‘educational’ tour of Scandinavia, and the concept of international friendship gained such popularity that in 1934, the Club achieved international status with the formation of the ‘Association Internationale des SKÅL Club’ or AISC. This was on the initiative of the first president of the Paris SKÅL Club, the man now considered the ‘Father of SKÅL’, Florimond Volckaert. Now known as SKÅL International, the association now boasts over 25,000 members, in over 525 Clubs throughout 80 nations on Earth. The World Congress is an integral part of SKÅL Club ethics. A five day event is hosted in a different country each year and consequently offering members and their companions the opportunity of observing, first hand, the travel and tourism potential of other countries. As the Scandinavian drinking toast suggests, ‘SKÅL’ the Club is founded on friendship around the world. OBJECTIVES AND AIMS SKÅL has activities in over 525 Clubs in 80 countries throughout the world. The worldwide reason for the Club’s being is to bring tourism executives together in an atmosphere that encourages friendship and to share professional concerns. The SKÅL Club strives to: • Develop friendship and common purpose between personnel in the travel and tourism industry. • Foster goodwill and mutual understanding worldwide through international tourism and travel. • Encourage and assist in the professional development of all, but especially the young people working in, or training for, the travel and tourism industry. The activities of SKÅL International highlight the following activities — Worldwide movement of SKÅL Club members between various sectors of the tourism industry, and participation in conferences, social events, friendship tours, congresses, assemblies and humanitarian aims. 7 THE FORMATION OF THE SKÅL CLUB OF CAIRNS By Les Smith A False Start In a letter to David Morrey-Jones Secretary of the SKÅL Club of Sydney dated the 22nd September 1981, in which he tendered his resignation from the Clubs’ Executive Committee because of his imminent move to Cairns to join Bush Pilots Airways, Les Smith wrote the following: “It is also my intention to explore the possibilities of forming a Club in North Queensland given the opportunity, and in this connection I shall be seeking the National Secretary’s advice and assistance.” And in a letter sent on the 14th October to David Morrey-Jones in his capacity of Secretary of the SKÅL Clubs of Australia, Les followed with: “No doubt you have been eagerly awaiting this.

  • Violence and Predation, Mainly in the Form of Piracy, Were Two Of
violence and predation robert j. antony Violence and Predation on the Sino-Vietnamese Maritime Frontier, 1450–1850 iolence and predation, mainly in the form of piracy, were two of V the most persistent and pervasive features of the Sino-Vietnamese maritime frontier between the mid-fifteenth and mid-nineteenth cen- turies.1 In the Gulf of Tonkin, which is the focus of this article, piracy was, in fact, an intrinsic feature of this sea frontier and a dynamic and significant force in the region’s economic, social, and cultural devel- opment. My approach, what scholars call history from the bottom up, places pirates, not the state, at center stage, recognizing their impor- tance and agency as historical actors. My research is based on various types of written history, including Qing archives, the Veritable Records of Vietnam and China, local Chinese gazetteers, and travel accounts; I also bring in my own fieldwork in the gulf region conducted over the past six years. The article is divided into three sections: first, I discuss the geopolitical characteristics of this maritime frontier as a background to our understanding of piracy in the region; second, I consider the socio-cultural aspects of the gulf region, especially the underclass who engaged in clandestine activities as a part of their daily lives; and third, I analyze five specific episodes of piracy in the Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin (often referred to here simply as the gulf), which is tucked away in the northwestern corner of the South China Sea, borders on Vietnam in the west and China in the north and east.

The period between the mid-1940s and 1980 saw the United States’ global influence expand through its quest to stop the spread of global communism. The ups and downs of this struggle impacted the ways in which Americans viewed and interacted with their government, causing moments of national pride (moon landing) and moments of division and tension (Vietnam War). This period also saw centuries of oppression of African Americans boil over into the Civil Rights Movement. The successes and struggles of this movement will be a major topic in the pages that follow. Overall, this unit will track these larger processes while maintaining a focus on how all of this played out in the varied experiences of actual Americans. TIMELINE: 1945-1980 INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS: 16 UNIT OBJECTIVES • Analyze the ways in which Americans’ views on the role of government change during the period 1945-1980. • Analyze the impact of individuals and their actions on the successes and failures of the period. • Examine the lasting inequalities and unequal distribution of progress in America during the period. • Understand the ways in which the Cold War and America’s global presence impacted Americans.

INFORMATION TO USERS This dissertation w s s produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand marki!^ or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document phorographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was posable to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting tiiru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin phoroing at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
