PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

I have worked as a conservation biologist, conservation planner, environmental historian, writer, editor, reviewer, consultant, and advisor for a wide variety of organizations, agencies, and other institutions at the local, state, national, and international level. These have included: the U.S. National Academy of Sciences; the U.S. Agency for International Development; the World Conservation Union; the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; The Nature Conservancy; the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program; and the Forest Guild. Positions and projects have included:

• 1/2012-present Senior Fellow, Center for Humans and Nature Responsible for working with CHN staff and partners on projects in fulfillment of its mission “to explore and promote human responsibilities in relation to nature—the whole community of life.”

• 1/2007-2011 Director for Conservation Biology and History, Center for Humans and Nature Responsible for developing programs involving a wide range of topics in conservation biology, land conservation, ecological restoration, community-based conservation, and environmental history and ethics.

• 5/2004-present Senior Leopold Fellow, Aldo Leopold Foundation Responsible for working with ALF’s staff and board of directors on projects in fulfillment of its mission of advancing the land ethic and its stewardship of the legacy of Aldo Leopold.

• 1/1993-present Research Associate, International Crane Foundation Responsible for varied projects involving the conservation of cranes and their ecosystems around the world. As an ICF research associate, I participate as a member of the Crane Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

• 6/2000-12/2003 Director of Conservation Programs, Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters Developed and oversaw conservation-related initiatives, including the “Intelligent Consumption Project,” an examination of the relationship between conservation of forest lands and the consumption of forest products; “Waters of Wisconsin,” a state-wide review of the status, needs, and sustainability of Wisconsin’s aquatic resources and ecosystems; and incorporation of conservation and the environmental sciences in the Academy’s core programs.

• 2/1992-9/1994 Consulting Conservation Biologist, Biodiversity Support Program Principal organizer of Conserving Biological Diversity in Bulgaria, Bulgaria’s national biodiversity strategy. 2

Involved extensive work with Bulgarian scientists, officials, NGO representatives, and the staff of the Washington-based Biodiversity Support Program. Edited the 2-volume Bulgaria's Biological Diversity: Conservation Status and Needs Assessment.

• 1/1990-8/1992 Program Officer, National Research Council, U.S. National Academy of Sciences Served with the NRC Board on Science and Technology for International Development (BOSTID), in cooperation with the Board on Agriculture (BA). Worked with NRC scientific committees in developing, writing, and preparing reports on international biodiversity research, sustainable agriculture, and natural resource management.
