Of the 4,752 scholars across the U.S. that we contacted, 971 responded. The resulting response rate is approximately 20.43 percent. The poll was open 10/30/2019-12/14/2019. Our sample is roughly similar to the broader International Relations scholar population in terms of gender, academic rank and university type. Our sample includes a higher percentage of men and a higher percentage of tenured and tenure track faculty than the overall scholar population. O'MALLEY JOHN EvELYN has often been described as a virtuoso in the seventeenth-century meaning of that word, and if it be recalled that the Earl of Arundel, the greatest of the virtuosi was his patron, that Evelyn was a member of the Royal Society almost from its inception and a diligent attendant of its meetings, which at that time dealt with a wide variety of curiosa and technological as well as scientific problems, that he was a vocal and literary exponent and collector of the odd and the artistic, and a recognized authority on architecture and gardens, he must certainly be classed among the notable virtuosi of his day. But within his multifarious interests and their related activities Evelyn appears to have had a particular regard for medicine, one that transcended the usual concern of those members of his class who did not espouse that subject professionally. Except for somewhat intermittent studies at Oxford, undertaken more as an obligation than because of genuine desire, medicine was the only discipline in which he deliberately took any formal instruction, and throughout the many years covered by his Diary medicine and matters ancillary to it received uncommon attention." Anyone living in the seventeenth century was very much aware of accident, disease, and ever proximate death. It was quite in the order of things that Evelyn, born in 1620, recalled from his fifth year the severe plague in 1625, its high mortality and the fact, as he later wrote, that he himself 'was shortly after so dangerously sick of a Feavor, that (as I have heard), the Physitians despair'd of me' (ii.7).2 He was fourteen years old when his sister Elizabeth died (ii.12), fifteen at the death of his mother, whose four attending physicians were identified by name in the Diary (ii.14-15), and twenty at the time of his father's death (ii.26).

JRMMRA 9 (1988) The Elizabethan Diplomatic Service by F. Jeffrey Platt Northern Arizona University The critical early years of Elizabeth's reign witnessed a watershed in European history. The 1559 Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis, which ended the long Hapsburg-Valois conflict, resulted in a sudden shift in the focus of international politics from Italy to the uncomfortable proximity of the Low Countries. The arrival there, 30 miles from England's coast, in 1567, of thousands of seasoned Spanish troops presented a military and commer­ cial threat the English queen could not ignore. Moreover, French control of Calais and their growing interest in supplanting the Spanish presence in the Netherlands represented an even greater menace to England's security. Combined with these ominous developments, the Queen's excommunica­ tion in May 1570 further strengthened the growing anti-English and anti­ Protestant sentiment of Counter-Reformation Europe. These circumstances, plus the significantly greater resources of France and Spain, defined England, at best, as a middleweight in a world dominated by two heavyweights.

Their records document campaigns, international congresses and other meetings, committees, finances, lectures and other programs, literary prizes awarded, membership, publications, and social events over several decades. Call Number: Manuscript Collection MS-03133 Language: The records are primarily written in English with sizeable amounts in French, German, and Spanish, and lesser amounts in numerous other languages. Non-English items are sometimes accompanied by translations. Note: The Ransom Center gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which provided funds for the preservation, cataloging, and selective digitization of this collection. The PEN Digital Collection contains 3,500 images of newsletters, minutes, reports, scrapbooks, and ephemera selected from the PEN Records. An additional 900 images selected from the PEN Records and related Ransom Center collections now form five PEN Teaching Guides that highlight PEN's interactions with major political and historical trends across the twentieth century, exploring the organization's negotiation with questions surrounding free speech, political displacement, and human rights, and with global conflicts like World War II and the Cold War.
