Get set to show off your skills at ’s new skate park

Work is well underway on a brand new skate park in Wincanton that will completely replace the old one in the town that had come to the end of its useable life.

The £160,000 project benefitted from a £12,500 community grant from South District Council that helped towards the build cost of the new skate park.

The skate park located at Cale Park in Wincanton had been subject to public consultation by Wincanton Town Council since the middle of 2019 after a group of young users expressed their concerns regarding the state of the skate park and the repairs that were needed.

Maverick Industries were chosen as contractor for the skate park project, working with Wincanton Town Council they have drawn up plans for a new concrete skate park.

Work on the new skate park started in February 2020, the metal skate ramps were removed and a new durable concrete skate park will be built, it is estimated that the works will take about 12 weeks.

Councillor Mike Best, portfolio holder for Health & Well-Being at District Council, said: “We’re pleased to see the build of the new skate park taking shape. The old facilities were very well used and it was a no-brainer for the District Council to help fund this project for the residents of Wincanton.”

Wincanton Town Council received grant funding from Viridor Credits, Sports , South Somerset District Council, Avon and Somerset and a donation from The Friends of Wincanton Community Hospital towards improving the Skate Park at the recreation ground where the metal skate ramps had reached the end of their useable life. A skate jam is planned for the grand opening at the end of May.

South Somerset District Council is committed to making the district a place where businesses flourish, communities are safe, vibrant and healthy; where residents enjoy good housing and cultural, leisure and sporting activities.
