A Carlson Homes Development A Carlson Homes Development a piece of history... St John’s Priory

Quintessential British architecture at its best…

St John’s Priory is an exceptional example of historical British architecture that dates back to 1877.

This Grade II listed property was originally designed by Charles Bell for John Stephens Donne of the Flax Mills family. Built using Doulting and Bath stone ashlar, a plain grey roof and ashlar chimney stacks with ornamental caps, this stunning piece of architecture boasts a rich and fascinating historical story.

In World War II American Forces occupied the Priory. Following the war it became

A Carlson Homes Development the convent home of the Sisters of Jesus Crucified who inhabited the building until 1997.

It has since fallen into disrepair and requires extensive renovation to restore many parts of the building to their former glory. Using architectural integrity, respectful of the Priory’s original splendour, Carlson Homes is transforming this property into a luxurious home in keeping with its stunning surroundings.

St John’s Priory is located in the centre of Castle Cary - a town also rich in historical events with records dating back to the 11th century.

Whilst St John’s Priory has seen its fair share of momentous historical activity since it was built in 1877, the town of Castle Cary has also had an eventful past.

Whilst the town has expanded over recent years it retains its original charm. Many of the shopfronts in the town centre date back to the 19th century and are still recognisable from old photographs.

In the 15th century it became known for its textile industry, manufacturing a cheap, coarse, hard-wearing cloth that was made for the poor. By the 18th century Castle Cary’s textile offering had evolved to include the production of good quality materials. In the late 18th century the Donne family established Flax Mills with John Stephens Donne subsequently instructing the build of St John’s Priory, then known as Florida House. Florida House was known as one of Castle Cary’s largest and most architecturally ambitious buildings.
