    Our Castle, Our Town An n 2011 BACAS took part in a community project undertaken by Castle Cary investigation Museum with the purpose of exploring a selection of historic sites in and around into the the town of Castle Cary. archaeology of I Castle Cary's Using a number of non intrusive surveying methods including geophysical survey Castle site and aerial photography, the aim of the project was to develop the interpretation of some of the town’s historic sites, including the town’s castle site. A geophysical Matthew survey was undertaken at three sites, including the Castle site, the later manorial Charlton site, and a small survey 2 km south west of Castle Cary, at Dimmer. The focus of the article will be the main castle site centred in the town (see Figure 1) which will provide a brief history of the site, followed by the results of the survey and subsequent interpretation. Location and Topography Castle Cary is a small town in south east Somerset, lying within the Jurassic belt of geology, approximately at the junction of the upper lias and the inferior and upper oolites. Building stone is plentiful, and is orange to yellow in colour. This is the source of the River Cary, which now runs to the Bristol Channel via King’s Sedgemoor Drain and the River Parrett, but prior to 1793 petered out within Sedgemoor. The site occupies a natural spur formed by two conjoining, irregularly shaped mounds extending from the north east to the south west. The ground gradually rises to the north and, more steeply, to the east, and falls away to the south.

    CURRY MALLET PARISH COUNCIL ORDINARY MEETING of the PARISH COUNCIL Minutes of the meeting of Curry Mallet Parish Council held on Monday June 15th 2015 in Curry Mallet and Beercrocombe Village Hall. Present: L W Frazer (Chairman), R J Allard, D R Beck, G K Townrow (Chairman for this meeting) and Mrs A J Clarke. In attendance: Derek Yeomans & Sue Steele (County & District Councillors respectively), Chris Dale (Village Hall Committee), Bob Burrough (Beercrocombe Parish Council), (all part time) Ann & Bernie Collett & Marjorie Hookham (all Magna Carta), Grant Turner and Peter McKeown (prior to co-option). 1191 Tribute: Mr Townrow started the meeting by paying tribute to the late Tony Davies of Beercrocombe Parish Council: Tony had been heavily involved in the execution of the Parish Plan during 2004 – 2006 for Curry Mallet and Beercrocombe residents. His sage advice and ability to resolve minor issues had been greatly valued. Mr Burrough was asked to convey the condolences of Curry Mallet Parish Council to Beercrocombe Council. 1192 Public Participation Time There were no items raised. 1193 To receive reports from the District and County Councillors on items that may be of interest The report from Derek Yeomans has been previously circulated to members. He vocalised that SCC were moving from implementer to motivator, using a private company for its care arrangements. It was noted that SSDC Area North Committee now has 6 re- elected and 7 new members. 1194 Declarations of Interest No new interests were declared. 1195 To approve and sign the draft Minutes of the meetings held on 11th May 2015 It was noted that a typo in draft minutes for 1189.1, reference to Jim Wells (not Weeks) has been made.

If you would like help in organising your walk, please contact any committee member who will be able to assist. Walk leaders and back-markers should exchange mobile phone numbers so that contact can be maintained in cases of emergency. Leaders and back-markers without phones should appoint substitutes. Numbers should be exchanged at the start of the walk. Every effort should be made to ensure a first-aid kit is available on all walks.. Walks are graded according to the following classification of pace:- A = Fast B = Brisk C = 5-7 miles Medium pace D = generally 4-5 miles at a more moderate pace Starting times of walks vary and need to be noted carefully. Members should ensure they carry their membership cards on all walks.     Charlton Mackrell CofE Primary School History Education in The Charltons first began with Sunday Schools, but Church Daily Schools were started in both Charlton Mackrell and Charlton Adam in 1830. The school in Adam closed and an Infants School only was opened from 1865 until 1917. In 1846, Charlton Mackrell School had 82 pupils of all ages, but only one room and a small house for the teacher. We don't know whether it was on this site or in the grounds of the Rectory, which is now called "The Court". The Rector was the Reverend William Thomas Parr Brymer, who began a complete restoration of the church in 1847. We believe he also planned the unique school building, designed by the architect C E Giles, which we still enjoy today. Certainly in 1846 he left money in his will to pay for the schoolteacher and other running costs of the school, as recorded on the brass plaque near the altar in Charlton Mackrell Church. After he died in August 1852, his brother James Snaith Brymer paid for this school building as a memorial to him and the recent restoration of the main schoolroom ceiling has revealed the commemorative inscription around the walls. The first schoolteacher we know about was Miss Elizabeth Rooke, from London. She left early in 1853, perhaps due to the new school building. After her were schoolmasters, W. Jackson, W. Wrigley, and then William Tyler. William Tyler was the schoolmaster and the church organist for nearly 10 years from 1856. There were also paid pupil teachers and monitors, as well as a schoolmistress for the Infants class.

    River Brue’s Historic Bridges By David Jury The River Brue’s Historic Bridges In his book "Bridges of Britain" Geoffrey Wright writes: "Most bridges are fascinating, many are beautiful, particularly those spanning rivers in naturally attractive settings. The graceful curves and rhythms of arches, the texture of stone, the cold hardness of iron, the stark simplicity of iron, form constant contrasts with the living fluidity of the water which flows beneath." I cannot add anything to that – it is exactly what I see and feel when walking the rivers of Somerset and discover such a bridge. From source to sea there are 58 bridges that span the River Brue, they range from the simple plank bridge to the enormity of the structures that carry the M5 Motorway. This article will look at the history behind some of those bridges. From the river’s source the first bridge of note is Church Bridge in South Brewham, with it’s downstream arch straddling the river between two buildings. Figure 1 - Church Bridge South Brewham The existing bridge is circa 18th century but there was a bridge recorded here in 1258. Reaching Bruton, we find Church Bridge described by John Leland in 1525 as the " Est Bridge of 3 Archys of Stone", so not dissimilar to what we have today, but in 1757 the bridge was much narrower “barely wide enough for a carriage” and was widened on the east side sometime in the early part of the 19th century. Figure 2 - Church Bridge Bruton Close by we find that wonderful medieval Bow Bridge or Packhorse Bridge constructed in the 15th century with its graceful slightly pointed chamfered arch.
