MASTER BEDROOM RENOVATION RESCUE Jess and Matt bought their first home together just over two years ago. When they moved in they had hoped to do some cosmetic renovations, but then they fell pregnant with their second child and had to put renovations on hold. They have covered up the brick and painted in their children’s bedrooms to make them look nice but have not done any work to the master bedroom, which is currently very cold and uninviting.

Adding to the problem, the current wardrobe for the master bedroom is located in the hallway outside the bedroom. They find it really frustrating having to go into the hallway to get dressed, especially in winter! The space in the bedroom is limited though and they are not sure if they have enough space to put in a wardrobe. It is up to Barry to transform this master bedroom and give this busy young family the space they deserve.

THE PLAN Barry’s plan revolves around covering up those ugly brick walls. He will clad the walls with V joint lining boards, using neutral white and silver tones to help breakaway from the brick. A dado rail will add some vintage character to the room and a picture rail will allow Jess and Matt to personalise the room with as many family photos as they like.

A stud wall will be put up at one end of the garage that will become the couple’s new walk in wardrobe. This will solve some of the family’s storage issues. And to finish off the room, Barry is going to swap the carpet for floorboards and add a study nook and reading area.

This is arguably one of the ugliest rooms that the Living Room has renovated but with Barry’s big plans, it could the best transformation yet.

DADO RAIL A dado rail (or chair rail) is a type of interior moulding, found running horizontally along interior walls. Dado rails typically sit at a height of between 750mm and 1500mm from the floor. Barry has chosen to place the rail at 900 mm for this room and he has selected mouldings from Bunnings that use the tongue and groove edging system. This is a great tip for the casual DIYer, it helps the rails slide into place and keep the walls level.

When you are attaching dado rails at home. make sure the wall surface is clean (no wallpaper) before fixing the dado to the wall. Once you've established the height for the dado rails, mark the height on the walls at each corner and then along each wall. Then use a good quality adhesive such as liquid nails to attach the dado rail. Once it is stuck in position, knock some panel pins underneath the bottom edge so it doesn’t drop down and out of level.

TOOL WALL Barry has come up with the creative solution of using some of the unused garage space that borders the bedroom to create a walk in wardrobe. On the garage side of the wardrobe wall he is also going to create a custom Ryobi Tool Wall that will be a Fathers Day surprise for Matt who is a cabinetmaker.

He gets Kyal to manage this easy DIY build. He begins by cutting a sheet of MDF to size, then creating a mitred frame and screwing it all together. Then he just attaches some cladding to the edges of the board with a nail gun. For a special feature, Kyal puts a LED strip light around the board by attaching 6 brackets to the back of the frame and simply feeding the LED light through.

Remember that the area you choose for this project should ideally have power to charge tools, although most of the Ryobi range are wireless.
