After discussing The following were recently baptized options with Stacey Shurtz and our Confirmation into the Church: catechists, it has been decided that I should confirm the 2020 teens before my departure. There isn’t enough time to do everything or see everyone. Happily, I’m only moving a hour northwest and expect to be downriver often.

Because time is limited and we can’t have a big farewell party, we will hold a “Parking Lot Parade” after the two Masses on June 27 & 28, my final weekend and conclusion of 16 years with you. I’ll be there to greet you and receive your blessing as I move to Christ the Redeemer Parish in Lake Orion (near I-75 & Baldwin Road). May we continue to give the Holy Spirit full permission to dwell within us with His life This weekend in the Gospel passage from Matthew 10: giving love so that all of God’s works may be 26-33 Jesus declares once again to his disciples “Do accomplished through us and that all people may come not be afraid of them” and in yet another translation to personally experience the saving love of God! “Fear no one.” Jesus exhorts his disciples, and each one of us, to remember how much the Father loves us And this is my prayer: that your love may increase and that the presence and power of the Holy Spirit is ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of with us. The Holy Spirit is actively leading the Church perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may and its members who seek the will of God. Denise Gorski Director of Evangelization & Adult Faith Formation We too can be encouraged in these difficult times that 734-283-1366 x112 ■ [email protected] the Holy Spirit will lead each of us individually and collectively as God’s people. Jesus tells us directly that we will face persecutions at times in the proclamation of the Gospel, yet can take full assurance that the “In life, there are many promotions Father knows every aspect of our life and being, in spiritual growth, but there is no including the number of hairs on our head. St. John Paul II affirmed the power of the Holy Spirit graduation.” being present in the Church and its members right after —T.J. Bach when he states: “After the resurrection and ascension of Jesus the apostles have a powerful experience which completely transforms them: the experience of Pentecost. The coming of the Holy Spirit makes them witnesses and prophets. (Acts 1:8; 2:17- 18) It fills them with a serene courage which impels them to pass on to others their experience of Jesus and the hope which motivates them. The Spirit gives them the ability to bear witness to Jesus with boldness. When the first evangelizers go down from Jerusalem, the Spirit becomes even more of a “guide” helping them to choose both those to whom they are to go and the places to which their missionary journey is to take them. The working of the Spirit is manifested particularly in the impetus given to the mission which, in accordance with Christ’s words, spreads out from Jerusalem to all of Judea and Samaria and to the furthest ends of the earth.” (John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio: The Mission of the Redeemer, The Holy See, Dec 7, 1990 #24) We too who are baptized and confirmed with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are being led in our lives by the same Holy Spirit that guided and sustained Jesus and the early Church. If you have been feeling lackluster, unmotivated or unclear about your life and purpose may I encourage you to call out to the Holy Spirit to bring you clarity and conviction about your life and fill your heart anew with the fire of His love. We are looking forward to Sunday, June 28 at 2pm when Fr. Bill with permission from the Archbishop will confirm our 19 candidates. They were originally going to be confirmed on Pentecost Sunday, May 31. We will also be live streaming this Mass for the extended family and the parish. This will officially be Fr. It is now the time to register your child(ren) for Religious Formation. The registration form and schedules can be found on our parish website. A Christian mother and her wayward son In the fourth century there was a dedicated Christian woman named Monica who lived in what is now Algeria. Her husband was Patricius, a wealthy landowner but a pagan. They had a son whom they named Augustine, born in 354. Monica's passionate desire was that her son would be a Christian. Therefore, not only did she expose him to the teachings of Christianity, she also prayed for him daily. Augustine was a brilliant but difficult boy. As he struggled through his teen years, he brought sorrow to his mother because he did not embrace her faith. He became a father at 17. He assumed responsibility for the son and the mother as well, but only as his common law wife. View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 5 June 21, 2020

Augustine also began to explore a pagan religion called Manichaeism. He continued his schooling but his life was counter to all of his mother's prayers. One day, while fervently praying for her son, Monica heard a voice that said, "It cannot be that the son of these tears shall perish." Augustine decided to go to Milan, Italy, to study. While there, he went to hear a gifted Christian preacher, Bishop , not so much for his sermons but for the brilliant rhetoric he used and his unique oratorical style. But while listening, Augustine began to feel a disturbance within. The Holy Spirit was at work in his spirit. One day while sitting in his garden, he heard a voice like that of a child. The voice said, "Take up and read." Augustine reached for a Bible which lay open. His eyes fell upon Romans 13:13-14. "Let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkeness, not in debauchery and licentiousness ... But put on the Lord Jesus Christ ...." That was Augustine's conversion experience. He became a priest and ultimately was chosen Bishop of Hippo in Africa. For 30 years he preached and wrote about the Christian faith. He was so dedicated that the church today refers to him as Augustine and his persistent praying mother as Saint Monica. St. Augustine, Florida, and Santa Monica, California, are named for them.
