Ruth Ann’s Ramblings …… (contributed by Ruth Ann Hoehn)

Carolina Wilhelmina Sandell

Lina Sandell was born in 1832 in Fröderyd, . Her full name was Carolina Wilhelmina Sandell Lina’s father Jonas Sandell had just begun his duty as a vicar in the parish of Fröderyd. Lina grew up with three sisters and one brother.

Lina was born during a turbulent time. The population in Sweden was growing quickly. This growth created many problems. More mouths needing more food in an environment where poverty already existed was a big problem. Many diseases were part of people’s lives. Many people died from cholera, tuberculosis and typhus fever. Lina herself was a very sick child at times. She was especially sick when she was ten and eleven. The family thought many times that they would lose her.

Lina learned how to read and write at an early age. By the age of thirteen she had filled a thick notebook with poems and serious reflections on the different aspects of life. Much of her focus in her early poetry was on nature and the creation. When she was confirmed the focus changed and after that she focused more on two important themes: the salvation and the life in Jesus Christ, and the longing for heaven. All through her life these two themes would follow her.

At the age of 21 her first collection of poems was published, followed by another collection of poems two years later. The collections had no author’s name though. She did not want to pride herself upon her writing. Her poems and her other writings began to be published in different Christian papers anonymously until one editor started to put her initials L.S. underneath her poems. During her whole life she never put anything else but her initials L.S. beneath her writings.

Lina’s sisters and the brothers all got married and moved away from the vicarage in Fröderyd, and she lived alone with her father and mother. She worked more and more as her father’s secretary. When Lina was 26 years old, she accompanied him on a boat trip across Lake Vättern, during which he fell overboard and drowned in her presence. Two years later her mother died. These tragedies inspired some of her early .

People at the newly established office of Evangeliska Fosterlandstiftelsen in knew about her capacity as a writer, and in 1861 they offered her an appointment at their office where they wanted her to “work with translations and other literary work”. Lina Sandell became Sweden’s first successful female head of a publishing house. During her 40 years at the office of “Evangeliska Fosterlandstiftelsen” she wrote more than 2,000 songs

She was the editor of many materials for children. She wrote biographies and spiritual pamphlets, she translated stories and songs from English, German and even Latin She was the head editor for many - and song collections. She published her poetry in several collections.

At the age of 35 Lina Sandell got married to the wholesale dealer Oscar Berg, who was seven years younger than her. Oscar and Lina never became parents.

Lina Sandell died in 1903 at the age of seventy and was buried at Solna Church in greater Stockholm

The hymn “” (Children of the Heavenly Father) was written by Lina Sandell. She probably wrote it when she was only seventeen or eighteen years old. Others hymns written by Lina Sandell include “Thy Holy Wings” and “Day by Day” (both in the With One Voice hymnal). From the Youth & Family Ministry Director: This is a busy and exciting time of year with the return of both school and our Sunday School. I have been praying for all of our families that our students have peace and courage in this new year, achieve their goals set for this year and are surrounded by people who support them in their endeavors and constantly point them toward God. I am looking forward to beginning a new chapter by teaching our High School students this year. Together, I know we can grow in faith and find creative ways of serving and growing together. I am so humbled by the tremendous amount of help and support our youth ministry receives. We definitely could not achieve all of our goals without the help of many volunteers. God’s love is definitely pouring out from all of our helpers. I want to mention a thank you to some special helpers in the month of August. First, I would like to thank all of the superhero volunteers for the Smallville Superfest game booth on August 15: Penny Booher, Ryan Phillips, The Schindlbeck Family, Lilly Urbina, Selina Urbina, and my own family. Thank you for making the booth fun and helping serve for this community event. I would also like to say a big thank you to Laron Hafenrichter for leading and helping our young singers with their special music for August 30. Our young singers have been looking for an opportunity to sing for our congregation, and we are thrilled to see them have that opportunity! During the month of August, Aden Baker, Cade Severson, Pastor Booher, and I had the opportunity to attend Confirmation Camp at Lutherdale in Elkhorn, WI. This was my first experience with Lutherdale, and I was moved by seeing how God was working through all the leaders and campers. It is a priceless experience. Please let me know if you would like to hear more about my experience. I would love the opportunity to share more.

Upcoming Events: Saturday, Sept. 12 3-5pm COME HELP DECORATE. Please come help Kathy Benoit get us ready for Sunday School by decorating the boards! We will also have a chance to decorate some cards to send to our friends in College or serving in the Armed Forces. Sunday, Sept. 27 4-7pm COMBINED CONGREGATION GAME NIGHT/POTLUCK. I am SUPER excited to announce that our next family game night will have even more friends to share fellowship. Our friends from United Methodist and First Baptist have been invited to join us for a family game night at First Lutheran. Please bring a dish or dessert to share that evening along with your favorite game. See you there! May God’s love and grace be with all of our families. ~Renee Mahoney
