The Musical Heritage of the Lutheran Church Volume I
The Musical Heritage of the Lutheran Church Volume I Edited by Theodore Hoelty-Nickel Valparaiso, Indiana The greatest contribution of the Lutheran Church to the culture of Western civilization lies in the field of music. Our Lutheran University is therefore particularly happy over the fact that, under the guidance of Professor Theodore Hoelty-Nickel, head of its Department of Music, it has been able to make a definite contribution to the advancement of musical taste in the Lutheran Church of America. The essays of this volume, originally presented at the Seminar in Church Music during the summer of 1944, are an encouraging evidence of the growing appreciation of our unique musical heritage. O. P. Hymnody and Liturgics MUSC205 Fall Semester, 2018 Tuesday, Thursday, 10:30-11:20 Prof. Dennis Marzolf YFAC 209 [email protected] 507-317-9584 Proposed Syllabus, August 3, 2018 Course Description: The history and development of hymnody and liturgical forms in the Western Church, especially as they relate to the Lutheran Divine Service, pedagogy and devotion. Special emphasis on the chorale and hymnody of the traditions of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The course integrates the academic disciplines of music, history and theology. Course objectives: Students will demonstrate a conversant knowledge of hymnody in the liturgical life of the church, and articulate the unique doctrinal posture of the Lutheran church as it is reflected in the liturgy of the church. Students are invited to grow in appreciation of the liturgy as a means of Gospel proclamation and teaching in the church, school and home. Hopefully all the students will discover some new “friends” in the world of the Christian worship as a result of this class. By the end of the term students will be able to: 1. identify the four liturgical blueprints of the western Christian tradition, and 2. relate the practices of song to those blueprints (How is the song of the Office different from the Mass, for instance…) 3. explain the relationship between the rule of faith (doctrine) and the way of prayer (liturgy). They will also be able to 4. identify the major themes, personalities, and dates of various eras and events in the history of Christian worship; (Music Outcome 5, religion Outcome 3) 5. describe their longterm impact upon the patterns and content of the liturgy and hymnody of the church. -

Women of the reformation Cornelia Schlarb 1. Introduction Since the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany) has proclaimed a Luther or reformation decade in 2008 in order to celebrate the beginning of the reformation 500 years ago, the interest in what and how women contributed to the spreading of the new reformatory ideas and live style has been increasing in Germany. The situation has been completely different when I was studying evangelical theology in Marburg and Heidelberg in the beginning of the 1980th. In that time German scholars, or rather female scholars, only started to research the bible and church history about women's contribution, although in other countries, like in the USA, Roland H. Bainton (1894-1984) had already published his book “Women of the Reformation in Germany and Italy” in 1971. It is very significant that it took 24 years to translate this book into German. In 1995 it had become available as paperback issue with the title “Frauen der Reformation. Von Katharina von Bora bis Anna Zwingli”. It contains seven biographies and a summarized description of women of the Anabaptist movement. It quickly became very popular and in 1996 already the third edition was published. In our lectures and seminars we only heard about Martin Luther, his life as monk and his conversion, about Luther´s posting of theses in 1517 in Wittenberg, about his central reformatory scriptures in the 1520th and the bible translation. We had to learn the important milestones of the reformation like the Imperial Diets / Reichstage in Worms 1521 and -

gotselius_article.quark73:Layout 1 11/1/07 10:17 AM Page 53 Historical Studies in Education / Revue d’histoire de l’éducation ARTICLES / ARTICLES The Vivid Alphabet: Media and Mass Literacy in the Early Modern Military State Thomas Götselius ABSTRACT This article explores the connections between literacy, media technology and power in early mod- ern Northern Europe. Designed as a genealogy of mass literacy, it suggests that the extremely suc- cessful literacy campaign in the kingdom of Sweden (dating back to 1686) was based upon a new kind of writing, a reshaped alphabetic technology, coterminous with a new technology of power, namely discipline, which originated in the army. At the same time, it argues that militarization of society, rather than consolidation of Lutheran faith, provides the pertinent context in which the take-off of universal literacy in Northern Europe, and, consequently, in the West, must be inter- preted. Thus it becomes possible to explain why mass literacy was first achieved in Sweden, a state of imperial ambition were military needs and military organization permeated every aspect of society.
