Women of the reformation Cornelia Schlarb 1. Introduction Since the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany) has proclaimed a Luther or reformation decade in 2008 in order to celebrate the beginning of the reformation 500 years ago, the interest in what and how women contributed to the spreading of the new reformatory ideas and live style has been increasing in Germany. The situation has been completely different when I was studying evangelical theology in Marburg and Heidelberg in the beginning of the 1980th. In that time German scholars, or rather female scholars, only started to research the bible and church history about women's contribution, although in other countries, like in the USA, Roland H. Bainton (1894-1984) had already published his book “Women of the Reformation in Germany and Italy” in 1971. It is very significant that it took 24 years to translate this book into German. In 1995 it had become available as paperback issue with the title “Frauen der Reformation. Von Katharina von Bora bis Anna Zwingli”. It contains seven biographies and a summarized description of women of the Anabaptist movement. It quickly became very popular and in 1996 already the third edition was published. In our lectures and seminars we only heard about Martin Luther, his life as monk and his conversion, about Luther´s posting of theses in 1517 in Wittenberg, about his central reformatory scriptures in the 1520th and the bible translation. German-American musicologist Manfred Bukofzer (Music in the Baroque Era, 1947) accused Hammerschmidt of having ‘watered down the achievements of Schütz for the multitude.’ Yet this composer gained much more respect in his own time – including from Schütz himself, who wrote an enthusiastic preface to one of Hammerschmidt’s half-dozen sacred music publications – than Bukofzer’s rather haughty verdict on him would lead one to suppose. Hammerschmidt served as organist in the main Lutheran church of Zittau, near the Polish border, from 1639 until 1671, when his health broke down. (His tombstone calls him ‘the Orpheus of Zittau.’) Despite his organ-playing role, he left no original pieces for his instrument, preferring to concentrate on choral repertoire. The lively, succinct motet in today’s concert, dating from 1646, sets a text by 17th century German poet, Christian Kiemann. With verses sung by a trio of menʼs voices and an SATB reprise, in recent years this has become easily his most popular composition. -

ABUSES UNDER INDICTMENT AT THE DIET OF AUGSBURG 1530 JARED WICKS, S.J. Gregorian University, Rome HE MOST recent historical scholarship on the religious dimensions of Tthe Diet of Augsburg in 1530 has heightened our awareness and understanding of the momentous negotiations toward unity conducted at the Diet.1 Beginning August 16, 1530, Lutheran and Catholic represent atives worked energetically, and with some substantial successes, to overcome the divergence between the Augsburg Confession, which had been presented on June 25, and the Confutation which was read on behalf of Emperor Charles V on August 3. Negotiations on doctrine, especially on August 16-17, narrowed the differences on sin, justification, good works, and repentance, but from this point on the discussions became more difficult and an impasse was reached by August 21 which further exchanges only confirmed. The Emperor's draft recess of September 22 declared that the Lutheran confession had been refuted and that its signers had six months to consider acceptance of the articles proposed to them at the point of impasse in late August. Also, no further doctrinal innovations nor any more changes in religious practice were to be intro duced in their domains.2 When the adherents of the Reformation dis sented from this recess, it became unmistakably clear that the religious unity of the German Empire and of Western Christendom was on the way to dissolution. But why did it come to this? Why was Charles V so severely frustrated in realizing the aims set for the Diet in his conciliatory summons of January 21, 1530? Professor Dr. Ernst Hinrichs hat mich ermuntert, meinen Forschungsansatz in einer Dissertation zu vertiefen. Mit großer Aufmerksamkeit und Sachkenntnis sowie konstruktiv-kritischen Anregungen betreute Ernst Hinrichs meine Promotion. Ihm gilt mein besonderer Dank. Dating the Reformation
The Protestant Reformation was the 16th-century religious, political, intellectual and cultural upheaval that splintered Catholic Europe, setting in place the structures and beliefs that would define the continent in the modern era. In northern and central Europe, reformers like Martin Luther, John Calvin and Henry VIII challenged papal authority and questioned the Catholic Church’s ability to define Christian practice. They argued for a religious and political redistribution of power into the hands of Bible- and pamphlet-reading pastors and princes. The disruption triggered wars, persecutions and the so-called Counter-Reformation, the Catholic Church’s delayed but forceful response to the Protestants. DATING THE REFORMATION Historians usually date the start of the Protestant Reformation to the 1517 publication of Martin Luther’s “95 Theses.” Its ending can be placed anywhere from the 1555 Peace of Augsburg, which allowed for the coexistence of Catholicism and Lutheranism in Germany, to the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years’ War. The key ideas of the Reformation—a call to purify the church and a belief that the Bible, not tradition, should be the sole source of spiritual authority—were not themselves novel. However, Luther and the other reformers became the first to skillfully use the power of the printing press to give their ideas a wide audience. 1 Did You Know? No reformer was more adept than Martin Luther at using the power of the press to spread his ideas. Between 1518 and 1525, Luther published more works than the next 17 most prolific reformers combined. THE REFORMATION: GERMANY AND LUTHERANISM Martin Luther (1483-1546) was an Augustinian monk and university lecturer in Wittenberg when he composed his “95 Theses,” which protested the pope’s sale of reprieves from penance, or indulgences. -
