DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN CELEBRATION

On June 24, 2007, at the Historical Shadelands Ranch Museum, the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council honored Bob and Fran Schroder for their contributions and dedication to the city of Walnut Creek and to the Boy Scouts.

By all accounts, everyone had a wonderful time and enjoyed the good food, good company, good speakers, and beautiful weather!

The Distinguished Citizen Celebration kicked off at 3:00pm with tours of the museum and displays of Eagle projects and Venture Crew activities by members of Crew 100 and Troops 810, 239 and 221. The event continued with a BBQ dinner and talks by Eagle Scout Art Thompson of Troop 237 and Venturer Deanna Ping of Crew 100.

Bob and Fran were presented with a commemorative crystal vase with Distinguished Citizen engraving, by the Scout Executive Al Westberg. The event was emceed by the Honorable Lynne Leach.

Support Scouting in poorer countries by holding a collection in your unit during 2007. This fund has always been Scout to Scout, with small change and small bills or a portion of a Scout’s allowance. To add an incentive for larger donations, your committee will give the special commemorative WFF patch to anyone who donates $10 or more. MDSC Scouts Celebrate the Centennial of Scouting Worldwide

With over 100 campers and over 200 participants at the summit, our council contributed in a major way to the worldwide Scouting Sunrise celebration, which took place around the world on Aug 1 at 8:00 AM local time.

KTVU Channel 2 news crews and Contra Costa Times reporters were there evening and morning to cover the event. Early risers enjoyed a continental breakfast, courtesy of Noah’s Bagels of Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek and Peet’s Coffee of Lafayette and Danville.

Thanks to Lily Remer and Tom Cooper for organizing the event and feeding the volunteers, which included members of Friends of Pleasant Hill Creeks. [see picture in other file]

YOUTH GROUPS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SCOUTING

Recently, many youth groups have discovered a way of taking advantage of the camps, programs and training offered by the Boy Scouts – by joining!

Scouting’s Venturing program offers opportunities to young men and women, ages 14 through 21, that were previously available only to boys in packs or troops. Venturing crews can use Scout Camps and other facilities, be trained in leadership for both youth leaders and adult advisors, be covered by Scouting’s group insurance, and use proven programs to encourage leadership, self reliance and citizenship among its members.

Each Crew determines its own activities and can take advantage of what Scouting offers to enhance their agenda. Crews sponsored by local fire and police departments may combine camping with specialized training. Some Crews have diverse themes, such as model railroading or animal husbandry. And a growing number of religious and church sponsored youth groups have adopted the Venturing program to enhance their appeal, through the promise of adventure and activity. Community service plays a large role in many of these Crews.

Any youth group can become a Venturing Crew. The sponsoring organization registers with the BSA, submits applications for youth members and adult advisors, and pays small processing fee. The rest is left to the imagination of the youth members, with the advise of the adult leaders. Information on joining can be obtained from the local District Executive, the District Membership Chair, or from the Scout Office. Information is also available online at www.bsa-mdsc.org.
