TITLE: Learning From Peace Makers OVERVIEW: Students examine The Dalai Lama as a Nobel Laureate and compare / contrast his contributions to the world with the contributions of other Nobel Laureates. SUBJECT AREA / GRADE LEVEL: Civics and Government 7 / 12 STATE CONTENT STANDARDS / BENCHMARKS: -Identify, research, and clarify an event, issue, problem or phenomenon of significance to society. -Gather, use, and evaluate researched information to support analysis and conclusions. OBJECTIVES: The student will demonstrate the ability to... -know and understand The Dalai Lama as an advocate for peace. -research and report the contributions of others who are recognized as advocates for peace, such as those attending the Peace Conference in Portland: Aldolfo Perez Esquivel, Robert Musil, William Schulz, Betty Williams, and Helen Caldicott. -compare and contrast the contributions of several Nobel Laureates with The Dalai Lama. MATERIALS: -Copies of biographical statements of The Dalai Lama. -List of Nobel Peace Prize winners. -Copy of The Dalai Lama's acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize. -Bulletin board for display. PRESENTATION STEPS: 1) Students read one of the brief biographies of The Dalai Lama, including his Five Point Plan for Peace in Tibet, and his acceptance speech for receiving the Nobel Prize for Peace. 2) Follow with a class discussion regarding the biography and / or the text of the acceptance speech. 3) Distribute and examine the list of Nobel Peace Prize winners. 4) Individually, or in cooperative groups, select one of the Nobel Laureates (give special consideration to those coming to the Portland Peace Conference). Research and prepare to report to the class who the person was and why he / she / they won the Nobel Prize. -

This insightful grouping of materials highlights the tenures of former Chief Scout Executives James E. West, Joseph Brunton, Alden Barber, Harvey Price, J.L. Tarr, and Ben Love. Speeches and associated writings from Deputy Chief Scout Executive George Fisher are included, in addition to writings by national Presidents Irving Feist, Norton Clapp, Robert Reneker, Arch Monson Jr., and Downing B. Jenks. These speeches and writings offer an exclusive look into the minds of prominent professionals and volunteers throughout history. Suggested outlines by speech writers, handwritten notes within the margins, and edited rough drafts provide a personal connection to these past leaders who created and accomplished so much for the Boy Scouts of America. The content of the documents includes recorded minutes of National Council meetings, speeches given at local council meetings, dedication ceremonies, and tributes. There are also speeches Gerald Ford discussing the need for cooperation with the YMCA and similar organizations in order to better train and benefit the youth of America. They address Scouting as applied to boys’ lives, and educated members and the public on the implementation of new programs, such as the Rural Program and Boypower ’76. Of other notable interest, the collection features correspondence and speeches from past presidents of the United States. -

LEATHERSTOCKING COUNCIL BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Danforth & Marguerite Bolton EAGLE SCOUT SCHOLARSHIP Two Grants of $1,000.00 per year, for two years (one-time award, nonrenewable) are made available by the Danforth & Marguerite Bolton Eagle Scout Scholarship Fund. Known by everyone in the Oneonta community, Dan was a banking CEO and Marguerite was a teacher with a passion for collecting sea shells and rocks. They shared a true passion for supporting Scouting and loved all that the Council programs offered its youth membership. This scholarship and its deserving recipients honor the incredibly generous legacy they left behind. Who can apply? Any Eagle Scout who earned his Award in the Leatherstocking Council and meets the qualifications noted below. Applicants may have earned their Award at any time prior to their request. It is not limited to Scouts earning the Award in their senior year, but you must be a graduating senior to apply. In order to qualify, you must: 1. Be a registered member of the Leatherstocking Council, Boy Scouts of America. 2. Be applying during your senior year of high school. Grants are awarded only to high school seniors graduating in the calendar year in which scholarships are presented. EXCEPTION: If your Eagle Scout Board of Review was held between March 1st and July 31st of your graduating year, you need to apply during the spring of your first year of COLLEGE or POST HIGH SCHOOL TRADE OR TECHNICAL PROGRAM. CODE OF CONDUCT: The 24th World Scout Jamboree Code of Conduct As a participant and a Scout at the 24th World Scout Jamboree, I agree to obey all U.S., State, and local laws, as well as the following Code of Conduct: • I am aware that I am a representative of the Scout Movement and will follow the Scout Law at all times during my travel and Jamboree participation. • I will be respectful, tolerant, and considerate of other cultures, including dressing appropriately for a multicultural environment. • I will obey safety rules, signs, and instructions by troop leaders and other adults. • I will follow the Jamboree sleep schedule, unless otherwise directed by the Jamboree program, by remaining in my campsite and respecting quiet times. • I understand that during the Jamboree the purchase, possession, or consumption of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs is prohibited. • I understand smoking is only permitted in marked areas and not allowed in tents. (Legal age is 18 years or older). • I understand that gambling of any form is prohibited. • I will avoid serious behavior issues including dishonesty, fighting, and bad language. • I will respect other participants’ property and refrain from ‘trophy hunting’. • I will keep the Jamboree and my personal site clean and follow recycling policies. • I will wear my Jamboree neckerchief and Jamboree ID at all times unless to remove them for safety. • I will comply with all elements of the Safe from Harm program to prevent abuse and harassment. • I will only trade patches and souvenirs with my peers and will refrain from selling any items. -

Spirituality in the Scouts Canada Program a proposal – December 2011 Lord Baden-Powell & Duty to God God is not some narrow-minded personage, as some people would seem to imagine, but a vast Spirit of Love that overlooks the minor differences of form and creed and denomination and which blesses every [person] who really tries to do his [/her] best, according to his [/her] lights, in His service. in “Rovering to Success” Reverence to God, reverence for one’s neighbour and reverence for oneself as a servant of God, are the basis of every form of religion. in “Aids to Scoutmastership” Spirituality means guiding ones’ own canoe through the torrent of events and experiences of one’s own history and of that of [humankind]. To neglect to hike – that is, to travel adventurously – is to neglect a duty to God. God has given us individual bodies, minds and soul to be developed in a world full of beauties and wonders. in “The Scouter” January 1932 The aim in Nature study is to develop a realisation of God the Creator, and to infuse a sense of the beauty of Nature. in “Girl Guiding” Real Nature study means…knowing about everything that is not made by [humans], but is created by God. In all of this, it is the spirit that matters. Our Scout law and Promise, when we really put them into practice, take away all occasion for wars and strife among nations. The wonder to me of all wonders is how some teachers have neglected Nature study, this easy and unfailing means of education, and have struggled to impose Biblical instruction as the first step towards getting a restless, full-spirited boy to think of higher things.
