British Royal Banners 1199 – Present Geoff Parsons & Michael Faul Abstract The presentation begins with the (accepted) date of 1199, the death of King Richard I, the first king known to have used the three gold lions on red. It continues to show how King Edward III added the French Royal Arms, consequent to his claim to the French throne. There is then the change from “France Ancient” to “France Modern” by King Henry IV in 1405, which set the pattern of the arms and the standard for the next 198 years. The story then proceeds to show how, over the ensuing 234 years, there were no fewer than six versions of the standard until the adoption of the present pattern in 1837. The presentation includes pictures of all the designs, noting that, in the early stages, the arms appeared more often as a surcoat than a flag. There is also some anecdotal information regarding the various patterns. A flexible game system allows players (not software designers) to decide on what rules to enforce, who enforces them, and when. I explore this in the context of digital card games and introduce two design strategies for promoting flexibility. The first strategy is “robustness”. When players want to change the rules of a game, a robust system is able to resist extreme breakdowns that the new rule would provoke. The second is “versatility”. A versatile system can accommodate multiple use-scenarios and can support them very well. To investigate these concepts, first, I engage in reflective design inquiry through the design and implementation of Card Board, a highly flexible digital card game system. Second, via a user study of Card Board, I analyze how players negotiate the rules of play, take ownership of the game experience, and communicate in the course of play. Through a thematic and grounded qualitative analysis, I derive rich descriptions of negotiation, play, and communication. I offer contributions that include criteria for flexibility with sub-principles of robustness and versatility, design recommendations for flexible systems, 3 novel dimensions of design for gameplay and communications, and rich description of game play and rule-negotiation over flexible systems. -

Shady Side Academy Senior School Summer Reading 2018 Summer Reading is an opportunity for you to explore some contemporary or classic books, challenging yourself with new ideas or becoming immersed in a gripping plot. You should choose a book that appeals to you and enjoy the process of reading. This is not the time to choose the shortest book or scurry onto the internet for a bland and superficial summary; this is not a time to follow someone else’s expert recommendation. Rather, this is a time for you to lose yourself in a story, under a tree or near a body of water, basking in the beautiful summer. Dig in and enjoy! You will read two (2) books over the summer. You are required to read a book from the lower-form (III and IV) list or upper-form (V and VI) list as your form in the fall dictates, plus a second book of your own choosing that you have not previously read. This second book can be a work of non-fiction or fiction, and all literary genres are welcome. The only requirement is that the selection be age-appropriate — nothing for much younger readers, please. Upon returning to school, students will be asked to deliver a short talk on this book in their English classes during the first week or so. This talk must include a brief summary, but it should focus primarily on an evaluation of the book — what about it was most and least effective, enjoyable, confusing, inspiring, etc., supported by specific evidence. More information on the presentations will be provided in the fall, but students should know in advance that each talk will last approximately five minutes and be followed by a short question-and-answer session. -

It’s not just about tents and campfires An example of how a non-governmental organization empowers young people to become good citizens making a positive change in their communities as well as in the world. Young people have often been seen as incompetent, however, if given the right tools they can achieve positive change today. They are not merely the adults of the future; they are the youth of today. Education and awareness rising are key ingredients in the creation of change and development. How to educate, enable and empower young people one might ask; the answer provided in this thesis is through the Scout Movement. The reason for this is that the Scout Movement is the world’s largest non-formal educational movement with a positive view on what young people can achieve. It is a movement that teaches young people good citizenship and empowers them to become self-fulfilled individuals creating a positive change in their communities. MARA PREDATOR CONSERVATION PROGRAMME QUARTERLY REPORT JULY - SEPT 2018 MARA PREDATOR CONSERVATION PROGRAMME Q3 REPORT 2018 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During this quarter we started our second lion & cheetah survey of 2018, making it our 9th consecutive time (2x3 months per year) we conduct such surveys. We have now included Enoonkishu Conservancy to our study area. It is only when repeat surveys are conducted over a longer period of time that we will be able to analyse population trends. The methodology we use to estimate densities, which was originally designed by our scientific associate Dr. Nic Elliot, has been accepted and adopted by the Kenya Wildlife Service and will be used to estimate lion densities at a national level. We have started an African Wild Dog baseline study, which will determine how many active dens we have in the Mara, number of wild dogs using them, their demographics, and hopefully their activity patterns and spatial ecology. A paper detailing the identification of key wildlife areas that fall outside protected areas was recently published.
