Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray.

God, the maker and redeemer of all believers: Grant to the faithful departed the unsearchable O benefits of the passion of thy Son; that on the day of his appearing they may be manifested as thy children; through Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Wisdom 3:1-9 (all sit)

he souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the Teyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth.

The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

3 : Requiem aeternam Mode II

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine: et lux Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: and perpetua luceat eis. V. In memoria aeterna erit let light perpetual shine upon them. V. justus: ab auditione mala non timebit. The righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance: he will not be afraid of any evil tidings. (Psalm 112)

Second Lesson: I Corinthians 15:50-58

tell you this, brethren: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable I inherit the imperishable. Lo! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

ruly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my words and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; The does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

10 On the Commemoration of All Souls

n the , the word “saints” is used to describe the entire membership of the I Christian community, and in the for All Saints’ Day the word “elect” is used in a similar sense. From very early times, however, the word “saint” came to be applied primarily to persons of heroic sanctity, whose deeds were recalled with gratitude by later generations. Beginning in the tenth century, it became customary to set aside another day—as a sort of extension of All Saints—on which the Church remembered that vast body of the faithful who, though no less members of the company of the redeemed, are unknown in the wider fellowship of the Church. It was also a day for particular remembrance of family members and friends. Though the observance of the day was abolished at the Reformation because of abuses connected with Masses for the dead, a renewed understanding of its meaning has led to a widespread acceptance of this commemoration among Anglicans, and to its inclusion as an optional observance in the calendar of the Episcopal Church.

13 Parish Notes 2 November 2020 All Souls

We have now resumed in-person worship after an hiatus of just over six months. We welcome those of you who are with us here today and refer you to the guidelines for gathering safely on the inside front page, and to the instructions you will find throughout the leaflet.

We hope to continue to offer worship in person as long as infection rates in New York City remain at an acceptable level. Should the situation deteriorate, we will adapt as necessary and close again if we must. As conditions improve, we shall return to our more familiar forms of worship and adjust restrictions. Our first consideration is for your health and safety.

For at least as long as Covid-19 remains a threat to public health and we have restrictions in place, we will also continue to live stream Sunday worship and continue our other online offerings:

• You will find Sunday Mass at 11 AM, as well as feast day services (as announced) on our YouTube Channel: www.YouTube.com/SaintIgnatiusNYC • Evening prayer is said Monday through Thursday at 6 PM EST on Zoom • The Great is said Fridays at Noon EST on Zoom • The is prayed Saturdays at 10 AM EST on Zoom Links to all Zoom services are found here: ww.saintignatiusnyc.org/this_week.html

If you are worshipping with us in person, you will note that we will not pass the collection plate at the , but rather leave the basin at the back of the church. Please place your offerings in the plate as you depart. You can also donate using the PayPal button on our web site, www.saintignatiusnyc. org, which you may access from your mobile device.

If you are worshipping with us remotely, there are many ways for you to fulfill your Annual Stewardship or Capital Campaign pledge, or to make a donation to the church. The easiest way for you to do this is via PayPal, accessed by clicking the Donate button on the front page of our web site. Your support remains essential to us during this period to ensure our continued operations in these challenging times, so we can serve you and our community, and keep up our historic property.

Music Notes: I am grateful to volunteers Henry Akona, Dhananjay Jagannathan, and Warren Woodfin for singing with me this evening as the Schola of Saint Ignatius, which will from time to time enrich our , with and without our regular of professionals. — Richard Porterfield

Prayer List: If you wish to place yourself or someone dear to you on the prayer list, please contact the office either by email ([email protected]) or phone (212-580-3326). In these days of strict privacy laws we will not know if you or a member of your family is ill or in hospital unless you tell us. Names will be placed on the list for six weeks, after which time they will be removed, unless renewed. Submissions should arrive by Wednesday at noon to be included in the bulletin for the following Sunday.

14 The Leopards: Helping Parishioners Help Each Other: Deacon Paul Kahn and Lucy Kuemmerle are working with a group of dedicated parishioners to help keep us together as a community in these days and to help provide assistance to those in need. You will hear from the Rector in the next few days with details of the initiatives they are putting in place, including a parish phone tree to stay connected, a list of prayer and spiritual resources, and various efforts for mutual, shared reflection on scripture and the present moment. As always the Leopards are also always ready to help out with your specific needs. Please be sure to contact Deacon Paul ([email protected]) if you want to volunteer to help out on these efforts or if you need assistance.

Christian Formation: We have expanded our Christian Formation offerings with a weekly discussion of the Daily Office readings on Thursdays at 4 pm on Zoom, facilitated by Deacon Kahn and Fr Towner. Each meeting will span the Daily Office readings of the preceding seven days. Father Towner and Deacon Kahn do not envision the readings as “homework that must be done in advance, but rather as common territory in some part of which (this reading or that) each of us will undoubtedly have encountered something we wish to share with one another, whether a fresh insight, or an old connection made meaningful again in our present. It will be a time to appreciate the relationship we enjoy in Christ as we reflect together on the story of our redemption.” You will find the Zoom meeting details on the web site in the weekly calendar and Father Blume will also email them to the parish each Thursday morning. For more information contact Deacon Kahn ([email protected]).
