THE APPROACH TO GOD

Worship Note: Children who would like to be in the Palm Sunday Processional should go to the back of the sanctuary during the Prelude.

PRELUDE All Glory Laud and Honor David Paxton

SENTENCES Psalm 118/James Ritchie This is the day that the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. This is the day that the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. With branches in our hands, start the festival. With branches in our hands, we start the festival! (people waving branches) March up to the horns of the . We march up to the horns of the altar. (people waving branches) O give thanks to the Lord, for God is good. For God’s steadfast love endures forever. adapted from Psalm 118 This is the day that the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

PROCESSIONAL FANFARE The congregation remains seated during the processional, standing when the hymn begins. The steps of the processional are called the “tripudium”; a simple and ancient step that well expresses the paradoxical nature of this day. Three steps forward, then one back – symbolizing the nature of our spiritual walk; of our ability to cheer one moment, and condemn the next.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION The streets were crowded. A parade mood filled the air. Shouts came from deep in the heart. Hosanna. Save us. Gracious God, we confess that our faith is often more show than substance and our hearts are in need of cleansing. Help us to lay at your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting that you forgive, heal and receive us as your own. prayer continues in stillness Save us from lukewarm faith and wayward hearts. Hosanna. Save us. Save us from our broken hearts and unlived dreams. Hosanna. Save us. Save us from callous indifference. Hosanna. Save us. Save us from unquenchable greed. Hosanna. Save us. Save us from lazy habits and faithless commitments. Hosanna. Save us. Save us from soft-mindedness and hard-heartedness. Hosanna. Save us. We cry from the depth of our hearts and the very pit of our souls. Hosanna. Save us. Save us now. Amen.

ASSURANCE AND LAW: The Lesson from Philippians 2:5-11 Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ , who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross.

Therefore, God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!

*CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. What Wondrous Love is This arr. A. Parker & R. Shaw What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul. What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse, for my soul. When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down, O my soul, when I was sinking down Beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul. To God I will sing, To God and to the Lamb I will sing, To God and to the Lamb, while millions join the theme, I will sing. And when from death I’m free I’ll sing on, And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be, And thro’ eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on. What wondrous love is this, O my soul. O my soul, And through eternity I’ll sing on.
