The Place Where God Dwells During the Divine , the Armenian Church holds the conviction that the bread and wine of Holy truly become the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Christ. If we take this conviction seriously, this means that when we come to Church, in a way beyond our comprehension, we are in the presence of the God who created the entire Universe and everything in it. This is why we come to Church in awe and in reverence. The chalice is made of fine metals like gold and silver and adorned with precious stones to acknowledge the one who will come to dwell within it: our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For all intents and purposes, we can view the chalice and its contents as being Jesus Christ himself, and therefore, any movements involving the chalice or actions taken upon it should be seeing as happening to Christ himself. For example, when the chalice is processed by the from the niche to the main , we can imagine Christ himself riding into Jerusalem upon the donkey when we hear the very same words uttered that day proclaimed by the priest: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.” Christ Born Among Us One of the most notable features of any Armenian Church is the icon of Mary and baby Jesus hanging above the main altar. This icon is not simply decorative. We can think of it as a signpost, as an X which marks the spot of something spectacular. In the same way that Christ was made present to the world through his birth of the Virgin Mary two thousand years ago, during the Divine Liturgy, Christ is made present to us through the gifts of bread and wine in the chalice. When we see the chalice, we should imagine the Virgin Mary embracing her Son, Christ Jesus, and allowing him to be made present to us through the reception of Holy Communion. Human And if the chalice is the place where Christ dwells, once we receive his body and blood through holy communion, we also become the dwelling places of God. In the same way that the chalice is crafted with the most precious metals to honor the one who will come to dwell within it, we too, as chalices of the presence of Christ, are called to live lives that build a fitting dwelling place for the Creator of the Universe and Savior of the World. It is within this context that we read these words from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians:

“Let each man take care how he builds upon [the foundation of his faith]. For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If any one destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and that you are that temple.” (1 Cor 3:11-17) .14 .13 .12 .11 .15 .10 .16 .9 .8 .17 .1 .7 .2 .70 .18 .6 .3 .4 .5
