It is an examination of Rihani’s socio-political thought and activism and his role as an intellectual who sought to engage both East and West. It discusses his endeavour to generate change in the Arab world within the conceptual and practical framework of his understanding of progress, liberation and unity. With his dual Arab-American identity and his humanist outlook, the quest for Arab progress, democracy and liberation from foreign rule, remained at the heart of Rihani’s engagement of both East and West. My analysis of the development of Rihani’s thought is anchored in my understanding of the dialectical link between his life experiences in the Arab world, the USA and Europe, and his literary creativity and activist commitment as a humanist intellectual. While viewing Rihani’s contribution in the wider context of contemporary Arabic thought and the changing conditions of the Arab East in his age, I give special attention to his efforts to engage his contemporary Arabs and Westerners alike. The Introduction provides a general framework of Rihani’s contribution and sets out the aims and methodology of this book. Chapter One outlines Rihani’s life and experiences in order to understand his ideas and activities. This biographical sketch focuses on important factors in Rihani’s childhood in Lebanon, his early youth in the USA and his subsequent travels and constant movement between the Arab world and the West. It is based on careful research into his books and articles, and his correspondence with literary and political figures and members of the general public, supplemented by further references in the writings of his brother and nephew. In tracing Rihani’s intellectual development, I highlight important influences, particularly his wide-range readings in Arabic and xii The Politics and Poetics of Ameen Rihani Western literatures, on his formation and on the evolution of his thought and activism. His travels in Arabia in 1922–23, which were a turning point in his journey as an intellectual and activist, receive special attention here. Chapter Two examines Rihani’s importance as a writer and political activist. The first two sections focus on two crucial dimensions of his contribution as a major and prolific Arabic and English essayist, and as a critical yet accessible historian. In discussing his contributions to the press in the West and in the Arab world, I highlight his advocacy of avant-garde views on religious tolerance, political reform and East-West mutual understanding. The second section of this chapter analyses Rihani’s historical methodology and his attitude to the past, highlighting his significance as a pioneer of critical historical writing in the modern Arab world. Rihani was no armchair writer but an intellectual activist interested in seeing social, cultural and political change in Arab societies. The third section of this chapter focuses on his efforts as a motivated, independent, and critical political activist. I discuss this against the background of the social and political transformation of Arab societies, and in the context of debates about the Middle East in the USA and Europe during his life time.

    Ameen F. Rihani: The English Manuscripts and Universalism In 1998 the Albert Ferris Rihani family donated to the Library of Congress facsimiles of the manuscripts of all of the English works and correspondence of pioneer Arab-American author Ameen F. Rihani (1876- 1940). The originals of these documents remain in the family museum in Freike, Lebanon. Since most scholars could not travel there to conduct research, an exception was made in Library policy that allowed the acquisition of copies while originals are extant. In the 1998 negotiations, Ramzi Rihani represented the family for this Gift to the Nation. Ameen Rihani’s papers are important to the nation’s memory. He was the first American of Arab heritage to devote himself to writing literature, to publish a novel in English, and the first Arab author to write English essays, poetry, novels, short stories, art critiques and travel chronicles. He is now the author of 32 books in English, published from 1911 to 2002, his publishing life being extended already by 62 years due to the editorial efforts of the Rihani family. His writings in English mark the beginning of a body of literature that is Arab in its concern, culture and characteristic, English in language, and American in spirit and platform. He published in the United States during the first three decades of this century in many major magazines and newspapers. According to University of Pennsylvania Professor of Arabic Roger Allen, Rihani and his fellow Arab immigrants were leaders in "the literary movement that was so crucial to the life and development of certain communities in the United States (especially Brooklyn, Cincinnati and Detroit) and also to the development of cultural and literary ties to the Middle East region."1 Rihani is recognized as the founder of Arab-American literature and the forerunner of ethnic American literature written by popular Middle Eastern writers.

The archaeology of Middle Bronze (IIa) Syria, in which the Mari age unfolds, has not been very helpful, simply because not enough North Syrian sites of that age have been excavated. The reports from the 'Amuq region (phase L), 'Atsanah (levels XVI-VIII), testify to a wide- spread use of a painted ware rounded of form, narrow necked, buff, with simple geometric designs (cross-hatching in triangles) within bands (cf. Iraq, I5 (I953), 57-65; Chronologiesin Old WorldArchaeology, p. I72). The material from Ugarit of that age being yet mostly unpublished, one looks forwardto the reports of excavation at Tilmen-Hiiyik, which is probably the site of ancient Ibla (for now, see Orientalia 33 (1964) 503-507; AJA 68 (1964), I55-56; 70 (966), I47).

    2.3 Syrian Arab Republic Road Network Syrian Arab Republic Road Network Roads Overview The total distance of roads in Syria is 97,401 km 19,490 km is paved (including 1,103 km of expressways) and 77,911 km is unpaved. Mainroad conditions and in-country trucking capacity is good and there are sufficient transport companies to meet demand. However delays in receiving GoS approvals and tax exemptions for receiving food and non-food items is a concern and this may affect on-time deliveries. The annex 'Importance of Road Transport in Syria' includes tables that give a clear idea on the importance of roads network in Syria as back bone for the country and the numbers of vehicles operating on this network. Road Construction / Maintenance The transport sector in Syria is significant to the of government because importance to the economy. Syria's transport and communication networks have expanded rapidly over the past decade to keep pace with the fast-growing population. The road network, for example, has increased by 10% in the past five years, of which 70% is asphalted. The MSR is a divided, multi-lane highway along the Damascus – Homs – Hama – Aleppo corridor with the Mediterranean ports of Tartous and Lattakia, and with Jordan to the south and Lebanon to the west. The secondary roads are in generally excellent condition and additional road construction is underway to extend the major highway network to include a link from Lattakia to Aleppo. Highways and secondary roads have weight-load restrictions (bridge classifications exceed 60 Mt). Due to the presence of potential obstacles on the road, grazing livestock for example, and times of reduced visibility due to inclement weather or dust then speeds came be severely reduced.
