HOPE CHURCH PALM/PASSION SUNDAY April 9, 2017 ~ 11:00 AM THE APPROACH TO GOD

PRELUDE There in God’s Garden R. B. Farlee

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP Hosanna, Hosanna! Sleeth Hosanna, Hosanna, O Blessed is He Who comes now among us, our Savior to be. A sign of God’s glory to you and to me; He comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, Hosanna, with joy let us sing, A message of love to the earth He will bring, Now offer Him welcome and hail Him the King, He comes in the name of the Lord.

Be glad-----this day. Let ev’ry heart rejoice! Prepare ----- the way with heart and soul and voice.

Hosanna, Hosanna, Now greet Him with praise, In joyful thanksgiving our song let us raise, And follow His Truth for the rest of our days, He comes in the name of the Lord, He comes in the name of the Lord.

THE ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM

PROCESSIONAL FANFARE The congregation remains seated during the processional, standing when the hymn begins. The steps of the processional are called the “tripudium”. The tripudium is a simple and ancient step that well expresses the paradoxical nature of this day: three steps forward, then one back, symbolizing the nature of our spiritual walk, of our ability to cheer one moment and condemn the next.

* OF PRAISE Rejoice, rejoice, you sons of Zion! Shout for joy, you daughters of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming: Shout hosanna, sing praise to God! He comes triumphant and victorious, yet riding on a humble donkey. Hosanna to God in the highest! From Zechariah 9 and Psalm 118 ______*Congregation to rise in body or spirit Bold type indicates congregational response

PRAYER OF CONFESSION We praise you, Lord, this day, with gratitude and joy, but we struggle to praise you each day in our lives. You come to us in peace, but we shut the door of our hearts against you. You come to us in humility, but we prefer our own proud ways. You come to us in judgment, but we cling to our familiar sins. You come to us in majesty, but we will not let you reign over us. Help us to lay at your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting you to forgive what is sinful, to heal what is broken, to welcome our praises, and to receive us as your own. Amen.

ASSURANCE AND CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Psalm 118 For Christ came into the world not to condemn the world, but that the world through him should be saved. John 3:17 Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 Hosanna! Amen!

*CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy , the of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
