The 2014 EES voter study was funded by a consortium of private foundations under the leadership of Volkswagen Foundation (the other partners are: Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Stiftung Mercator, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian). It profited enormously from to synergies that emerged from the co-operation with the post-election survey funded by the . Last but certainly not least, it benefited from the generous support of TNS Opinion who did the fieldwork in all the 28 member countries.

The main aim of the EES 2014 Voter Study, Second Post-Election Survey is to partially remedy for the mistake that appeared in the question wording of qpp19 in the EES 2014 Voter Study, First Post-Election Survey. To be more specific in the First Post-Election Survey the original question wording of item qpp19 was changed from: “And about where would you place the following parties on this scale? How about the (Party X)? Which number from 0 to 10, where 0 means “[European integration] already gone too far” and 10 means “[European integration] should be pushed further” best describes [Party X]?” to “And about where would you place the following political parties on this scale from 0 to 10, where '0' means the political party "has already gone too far[with European integration] " and '10' means it [European integration] "should be pushed further"?” What number on this scale best describes [Party X]?”. Adding “political party” to the original question wording altered the meaning of the question making it impossible to accurately capture the perception of respondents regarding the placement of the parties on the pro-anti EU axis of political competition. Therefore both the original wording (qpp19a) and the modified question (qpp19b) wording were included in the EES 2014 Voter Study, Second Post-Election Survey. The original question wording (qpp19a) and the modified question wording (qpp19b) were both randomly assigned to 66% of the sample so that 33% of the entire sample answered both the original and modified question wordings. On the one hand, this design allows users to compute the “objective” party positions on the pro-anti EU continuum based on the original question wording present in the EES 2014 Voter Study, Second Post- Election Survey and subsequently integrate these “objective” party positions in the EES 2014 Voter Study, First Post-Election Survey. On the other hand, the presence of both the original and modified question wordings together with a number of other items tapping into both general political attitudes and specific attitude towards the EU, might potentially allow future users to establish a connection between the two versions of the question.

Structure of the data file

Variable names

The data file consists of four sets of variables distinguished by the characters qp, qpp, d, p and w.

The p variable describe the interview protocol: i.e. date of the interview, language on interview, region where interview took place, size of locality. The “SPLIT” item indicates if the respondet got the original, the modified of both qpp19 items (i.e SPLIT group A received the orginal question wording, SPLIT group B received both the orginal and modified question wording, SPLIT group C received the modified question wording) qp and qpp variables comprise the interview questions. Both variable order reflect that of the 2014 questionnaire. The numbering of the questions was altered so that it corresponds to the EES 2014 Voter Study, First Post-Election Survey, the numbering of the item as reflected by the master questionnaire can be find in the label of the items. d variables represent the socio-demographic variables provide by TNS-opinion. The variable order and –numbering reflect that of the 2014 questionnaire. w variables are additional variables, based either on additional information from the fieldwork agency, or derived on the basis of questionnaire variables. The weighting variables are based on standard weighting factors: gender x age, urbanization, region (Nuts).

Missing Values

All qp, qpp and d variables follow an identical missing values labeling scheme. -9: Don't Know [DK] -8: Refused [REF] -7: System missing For the qpp8 and qpp14 batteries the we added: -99: Do not know the party

In addition, a number of variables (e.g., vote choice) have additional missing value labels within this range. Where relevant, consistent labeling has been implemented. Please note that no missing values have been defined in the Advance Release file, so it is up to the researcher to decide how to deal with various causes of missing data.

Where possible, the original question codes have been maintained as subfixes. Missing values are not country specific.

The vote intention question is qpp6. Based on this variable we computed a new set of variables (qpp6_ees) assigning unique values that correspond to the European Parliament Election Study 2009, Voter Study, in case the parties were not included in the 2009 study we assigned a new code. Additionally qpp6_emcs was computed to reflect the coding system used by the Euromanifesto Project.

A special case form the questions regarding the original placement of parties along the pro-anti EU continuum (qpp19a_ and qpp19b_).For these variables, not the answer options, but the actual questions vary by country. For these three sets of questions, the specific party probed is described in these release notes (see below).

A list, containing party probed in both (qpp19a_ and qpp19b_, as well as the corresponding party codes (used in the vote choice and party ID questions), is provided for the user’s convenience (see below, Appendix 1: EES 2014 party codes and variables).

Variable Specific notes The following is a description of those variables where additional information may be required.

Qpp6 Party Choice Question qpp6 the answer options (parties) vary per country. Country specific codes have been recoded and now start with a country prefix (1+ISO) followed by a specific code per party, see variables qpp6_ees and qpp6_emcs. Labels for qpp6_ees and qpp6_emcs, qpp5_ees are included in the integrated data file. See the bellow spreadsheet (i.e Appendix 1: EES 2014 party codes and variables) for the for the party names and codes used in these questions, as well as questions qpp19a_ and qpp19b_.

Qpp19a_ pxx, qpp19b_pxx, Qpp19a_pxx (original question wording regarding the placement of the parties on the pro-anti EU continuum) and qpp19b_pxx (modified question wording regarding the placement of the parties on the pro-anti EU continuum): each questions probes one specific party. The party probed is documented bellow.

The suffixes (_pxx) are consistent for the two blocs of questions, and are identical to those used in the original language questionnaires

Note that order of the parties is fixed, and identical to that used in the original language questionnaire. The starting point of the rotation (first question asked) varies per respondent and question bloc.
