2011 WOMEN’S LACROSSE MEGHAN McNAMARA Head Coach • Fourth Season • Maryland ‘01

Meghan McNamara returns to the fi eld for her fourth season as the Pioneers’ head coach. Last year, she guided C.W. Post to a 16-2 overall record, and the program’s fi fth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship tournament. McNamara’s 2010 squad boasted numerous accolades, including fi ve IWLCA All-Americans, the East Coast Conference Off ensive Player, Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year and a second place ranking in the fi nal IWLCA poll of the season. Ten players were named to the East Coast Conference All-Conference roster, and McNamara was awarded ECC Coach of the Year by her peers. Her 2010 squad fell short to Adelphi in the NCAA semi- fi nals, however, McNamara’s team handed the Panthers their only loss of the season with a 21-16 win in the teams’ regular season matchup. Th e women’s lacrosse team also takes its cue from McNamara off the fi eld, as the team won the IWLCA Team Community Awareness award for their active participa- tion in community service throughout the entire year. In 2009, McNamara guided the Pioneers to a fourth straight NCAA appearance, complete with a 16-3 record and a second playce ranking in the IWLCA fi nal poll of the season. She mentored four All-Americans including two IWLCA play- ers of the year, as well as nine All-Conference honorees. McNamara led the Pioneers to a successful 2008 season, which included their third straight NCAA appearance and second appearance in the title game, posting an overall record of 17-2 for the season. Five players were named All-American while nine were named ECC All-Conference. A native of East Northport, N.Y., McNamara was an as- sistant coach at C.W. Post for two seasons (2006-07), where she helped the Pioneers to a 33-2 record. Her coaching helped the team to a perfect 17-0 record in 2007, enroute to the program’s second NCAA Division II national championship. Prior to coming to C.W. Post, McNamara spent four sea- sons as assistant coach at nearby . She was actively involved in recruiting for the Seawolves program, and was instrumental in developing individual workouts and off ensive game strategies. McNamara was the assistant director of Stony Brook Lacrosse Camps and Clinics during her stay at the school, and spent the fi nal four months of the 2005 calen- dar year as the program’s interim head coach. She is a 2001 graduate of the University of Maryland, where she helped the Terrapins to a combined record of 83-4 and four national championships during her playing career. A

McNamara is currently entering her fourth season as assis- tant coach of the Irish National Team alongside Dan Leidl, who served as assistant coach at C.W. Post in 2005. She represented Ireland along with several Pioneer alumni in the European La- crosse Championships held in Finland in August 2008. She also helped the Irish to a fi fth place fi nish in the 2009 World Cup held in Prague.

Kristie Leggio enters her fi rst year on the Pioneer coach- ingi staff , bringing valuable playing and coaching experience to the team.t She will work alongside McNamara with both defense and offo ense. Leggio’s most recent coaching stint was at Bay Shore High School,S where she served as an assistant girl’s lacrosse coach for twot years. During her tenure at Bay Shore, she helped guide the teamt to a 2010 Suff olk County Championship. She also served as an assistant at Bay Shore from 2004-05, helping the Marauders to a Suff olk County and Long Island Championship along with an NY State semifi nals appear- ance in 2005.

Th e standout lacrosse player competed for two seasons at Maryland, where she helped ASSISTANT COACHES the team to an ACC Championship as well as a fi nal four appearance in 2003. She then played the remainder of her career at the University of Denver from 2006-07. Leggio capped her career by twice being named the MPSF Player of the Year and the University of Denver Female Athlete of the Year, along with two-time All-Region accolades, 2007 All-America honors and a Tewaarton Trophy watch list mention. She broke the Denver single-season record for assists (44), points (111) and goals (67). In addition, she was ranked third in the NCAA in goals per game during her senior season, and she is currently 17th in NCAA his- tory in point per season. Th e Bay Shore, N.Y. native received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Denver in 2008.

LISA CHRISTIANSEN Assistant Coach • Fourth Season • Cortland ‘85

Lisa Christiansen returns to the fi eld for her fourth seasons as assistant coach for the Pioneers. Christiansen graduated from SUNY Cortland in 19851 with a bachelor’s degree in Education. A member of the CortlandC women’s lacrosse team from 1982-1985, Christiansen earnede herself a starting role for three years between the pipes. DuringD her junior year, she accumulated 122 saves and earned a 4.48 goals against average in 17 games while helping her team to a second place fi nish in the USWLA Division III women’s lacrosse tournament. As a senior in 1985, she had a .600 save percentage and made 161 saves. Truly a pioneer in women’s lacrosse, Christiansen led her team to the fi rst round of the fi rst ever NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse tournament. Christiansen has been a physical education teacher in the Syosset Central School District since 1987 and obtained her master’s degree in education from Hofstra Univer- sity in 1990. She served as head women’s lacrosse coach for Syosset High School from 1989-2007. Christiansen has played a role as manager of the USA U19 Women’s lacrosse team, who earned the title of World Champions in 1999, 2003, and 2007. She was induct- ed into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame in 2007. In ad- dition to teaching and coaching, she works as a trainer for both the US Lacrosse Coaches Education Program and the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Janelli is one of the most consistent players on the team. She brings a great deal of experience and poise on both the off ensive and defensive ends. An outstanding competitor and leader on the defense, she is often charged with marking the other team’s top scorer. Her veteran presence is combined with a very poised and positive attitude, which from. Sophomores Megan Noone (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Chelsea Caiazza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) will also see time at midfi eld this season. She has good techni- cal skills and fi eld vision and though a predominately right-handed player, she has a great lefty shot. A strong and physical defender, McNa- mara describes her as a very inspiring player to coach and play with, and calls her “the glue that keeps the defense together.” Newcomer Aimee Capps (Rocky Point, N.Y.) is a very vocal defender who adds an immediate burst of energy to the defense. 2011 WOMEN’S LACROSSE David Steinberg - President, Long Island University Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees.

He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi- tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.

Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.

He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. Th e couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom- plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow. Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008.

Administration A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacifi c Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post.

As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op- portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.

Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philoso- phy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: Th e Long Journey Back.” 2011 Women’s Lacrosse Media Guide 32 C.W. POST PIONEERS

2011 WOMEN’S LACROSSE Bryan Collins, Director of Athletics

Bryan Collins is in his fi fth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Col- lins’ leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels.

During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 22 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.

Th is past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, baseball, men’s lacrosse, softball and women’s lacrosse teams all participated in NCAA tournaments. athletic Administration C.W. Post boasts many of the most top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. Th e Pioneers fi nished fi rst in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for 2009-10, the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and fi eld hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Off the fi eld, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the eff orts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service.

Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and aca- demic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program.

During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. Th e department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fi elds have undergone improvements to their playing surface. Th e Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff .

A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifi ce in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987.

Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (15) and daughter, Megan (10).
