Dear Parishioners,

We have hungered for the Eucharist and for our parish community during the pandemic. But there is good news. Weekend Masses have resumed. The decree issued by Soto on March 13, 2020, dispensing all the faithful from the obligation to attend Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation remains in effect.

Bearing the above in mind, please know the following:

• In preparation for the return of the public celebration of Masses, the Diocese has given guidelines to the local parishes to follow. These guidelines are in line with the recommendations of the civil authorities and are in accord with established norms for celebrating Masses. It will be vitally important that we faithfully follow these guidelines once in-person Mass celebrations commence. To review these guidelines, please click here. Please also note that the guidelines have been updated as of June 4, 2020 such that masks are now required to be worn for the duration of the Mass for everyone 10 and older. Please bring your mask with you to church.

• Communicants are to receive communion in their hand wearing the masks, step to one side, remove the mask to consume the Body of Christ then replace their mask. Those who prefer to receive on the tongue will receive at the end of communion.

• In addition, physical distancing is to be observed by every person present (except for those individuals living in the same household who may remain close to one another). As a result, we’ve had to reconfigure the seating in the church such that capacity will be limited to 100 people including the priest, (s), cantor and ministers of the Eucharist and the Word.

• To ensure that we remain within the 100 person limit, registered parishioners and their immediate family are asked to reserve a seat. At 8 am on Thursday mornings, links will be published on the myParish app and our website which will enable you to reserve a seat or seats for the following weekend on a site called “Eventbrite”. This is a new system for SJM so we ask your patience as we implement. Please also note that while Eventbrite refers to ticket “sales” there is no cost for your reservation. If you do not have internet access there will be a limited number of reservations available by calling the Parish Office. Please sign up online and callonly if you do not have internet access. The priest, deacon, cantor, ushers and EMs will be accounted for but their family members must have tickets.

• If the Mass you would like to attend is marked as “sold out” please try another Mass. Please bring your reservation printout with you when you come to church. If anyone arrives at Mass without a reservation, they will be placed in a “standby” line. Please do not be late for Mass as your reserved seat may be given away. Also, since we will need a “check-in” procedure it is advisable to arrive 15 minutes early.

• Collection baskets will not be passed; rather a box for your donation will be set up. You are also encouraged to give online at https://www.faithdirect.net.

• Bishop Soto has also indicated that those who fall in the vulnerable category, i.e. individuals age 65+ and persons with compromised health conditions, are respectfully asked to refrain from attending in-person Masses and are encouraged instead to attend a weekday Mass or participate remotely via the on-line streaming of Sunday Mass from our church at https://www.youtube.com/saintjosephmarellocatholicchurch Parish Announcements Sunday, July 5, 2020 3

• Finally, St. Anthony of Padua is a parish located in The Woodlands, Texas as part of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. They’ve produced a five-minute video on the reopening of their parish. Their procedures closely mirror those we’ll be putting in place in our own parish. You are invited to watch as part of your preparation for our own reopening: https://vimeo.com/413843353

May God continue to bless us during this time and bring us soon to a day when we can fully reopen our Church.

Father Phil Massetti, O.S.J.
