  • June 24, 2018 Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
Sunday, April 26, 2015 1 June 24, 2018 Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist JUNE IS DIACONATE MONTH (Part 3 of a 3 part series) My Experience as Deacon Dennis’ Wife - by Jo Gorsuch It is my great honor to journey with Dennis as he responds to his call to the Permanent Diaconate and serves here at St. Joseph Marello Catholic Church. We are blessed to be assigned to this Parish, especially benefiting from the spiritual wealth of the Oblates of St. Joseph and our devout parishioners. When Dennis first told me that he felt a call to become a deacon, I was very surprised, but I encouraged him to follow his heart. Soon we learned that the wife of a Permanent Deacon has a role to play. When a husband/ father assumes the responsibilities of a permanent deacon, there is definitely an impact on balancing married life, family life and career responsibilities. Wives are called upon to accompany the deacon candidates in the discernment process and pre-ordination formation activities. This included psychological testing and interviews prior to our being accepted as a couple into the diaconate class. I attended all weekends of prayer and instruction for the discernment year and the four years of diaconal formation. Participating in this way allowed Dennis and I to grow together, strengthen our marriage and prepare for dedicated service to the church. Each year each wife had the opportunity to express any reservations they had regarding their husband continuing in the formation program in a letter to Bishop Weigand.

-::, » . .• f Grants of Land in California Made by Spanish or Mexican Authorities Prepared by the Staff of the State Lands Commission ----- -- -·- PREFACE This report was prepared by Cris Perez under direction of Lou Shafer. There were three main reasons for its preparation. First, it provides a convenient reference to patent data used by staff Boundary Officers and others who may find the information helpful. Secondly, this report provides a background for newer members who may be unfamiliar with Spanish and Mexican land grants and the general circumstances surrounding the transfer of land from Mexican to American dominion. Lastly, it provides sources for additional reading for those who may wish to study further. The report has not been reviewed by the Executive Staff of the Commission and has not been approved by the State Lands Commission. THE first issue hiwing been exhausted in less than eighteen months, a second edition is now presented to the reader. The whole work has been revised with much care, many parts have been amplified, and some have been recast. The chief new feature in the present edition is the introduction of the Teaching of the Tirelve Apostles, a treatise of the Primitive Church recently discovered at Constantinople, and published whilst our History was passing through the press. • Vol 2, No 85 Vatican II Bishop Alden Bell Writes
SACRAMENTO DIOCESAN ARCHIVES Vol 2 Father John E Boll, Archivist No 85 VATICAN II: A REPORT FROM BISHOP ALDEN J. BELL To the Seminarians of the Diocese of Sacramento Printed in the December 1962 issue of The Call Bishop Alden J Bell On March 30, 1962, Pope John XXIII named Bishop Alden John Bell, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, as the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento. Just six months later, Bishop Bell attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council in Rome. During that first session in the fall of 1962 he sent a hand written letter to the seminarians of the diocese telling them of his initial experience at the Council. That letter printed below was published in The Call, the quarterly publication from Saint Pius X Seminary, the minor seminary of the Diocese of Sacramento which, in 1962, was located near Galt, California. My dear Seminarians: The gathering of the 2,500 Fathers of the Council is indeed an unforgettable experience for everyone taking part. I am surrounded by bishops from all over the world, hear all languages, and see many forms of dress. To my right sits a bishop from Lebanon of the Maronite Rite, and the Bishop of Colón, the Panama Canal Zone. To my left, Bishop Gill, Auxiliary of Seattle. In front of me, a bishop from Africa, and behind me, a bishop from Spain. As far as council business is concerned, the trend is for some change in the liturgy. It has already been settled that there will be definite changes in the Mass, especially as to language.

  • Forestry Education at the University of California: the First Fifty Years
fORESTRY EDUCRTIOfl T THE UflIVERSITY Of CALIFORflffl The first fifty Years PAUL CASAMAJOR, Editor Published by the California Alumni Foresters Berkeley, California 1965 fOEUJOD T1HEhistory of an educational institution is peculiarly that of the men who made it and of the men it has helped tomake. This books tells the story of the School of Forestry at the University of California in such terms. The end of the first 50 years oi forestry education at Berkeley pro ides a unique moment to look back at what has beenachieved. A remarkable number of those who occupied key roles in establishing the forestry cur- riculum are with us today to throw the light of personal recollection and insight on these five decades. In addition, time has already given perspective to the accomplishments of many graduates. The School owes much to the California Alumni Foresters Association for their interest in seizing this opportunity. Without the initiative and sustained effort that the alunmi gave to the task, the opportunity would have been lost and the School would have been denied a valuable recapitulation of its past. Although this book is called a history, this name may be both unfair and misleading. If it were about an individual instead of an institution it might better be called a personal memoir. Those who have been most con- cerned with the task of writing it have perhaps been too close to the School to provide objective history. But if anything is lost on this score, it is more than regained by the personalized nature of the account.
