JUNE IS DIACONATE MONTH (Part 3 of a 3 part series) My Experience as Dennis’ Wife - by Jo Gorsuch

It is my great honor to journey with Dennis as he responds to his call to the Permanent Diaconate and serves here at St. Joseph Marello . We are blessed to be assigned to this Parish, especially benefiting from the spiritual wealth of the Oblates of St. Joseph and our devout parishioners. When Dennis first told me that he felt a call to become a deacon, I was very surprised, but I encouraged him to follow his heart. Soon we learned that the wife of a Permanent Deacon has a role to play. When a husband/ father assumes the responsibilities of a permanent deacon, there is definitely an impact on balancing married life, family life and career responsibilities. Wives are called upon to accompany the deacon candidates in the discernment process and pre-ordination formation activities. This included psychological testing and interviews prior to our being accepted as a couple into the diaconate class. I attended all weekends of prayer and instruction for the discernment year and the four years of diaconal formation. Participating in this way allowed Dennis and I to grow together, strengthen our marriage and prepare for dedicated service to the church. Each year each wife had the opportunity to express any reservations they had regarding their husband continuing in the formation program in a letter to Weigand. There is no specific requirement of service for the deacon’s wife, though many wives become very involved. I cherish the times that Deacon Dennis and I serve together as he baptizes, leads prayer services, performs funeral rites of committal, visits the sick and homebound, facilitates marriage preparation and coordinates RCIA. Dennis prepares diligently for delivering a homily. At times, I contribute insights, recommend resources and offer suggestions. For years Dennis stood by my side when we attended .Although I miss him standing next to me, I focus on and appreciate his role as Minister of the Chalice, assisting the celebrant at the altar during Mass. My favorite ministries are homebound visits, altar linen preparation and RCIA catechist presentations. I enjoy casual meetings with parishioners, sharing and learning together in Bible Study classes and participating in pilgrimages. In the early years of the Marian Guild, I was honored to lead the Spirituality Committee. I am amazed and inspired by the superb leadership, untiring generosity and devotion of the women of our guild to Our Blessed Mother. There have been many blessings in giving my support to Dennis’ diaconal call: increased opportunity to grow in knowledge and love of God, companionship on the journey of service and prayer, and the gift of friendship in this warm, loving and faith-filled parish community. 2 Sunday, June 24, 2018 Parish Announcements

Lighthouse Book of the Week: The Case for Jesus In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, the bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, goes back to the sources—the biblical and historical evidence for Christ—in order to answer several key questions, including: • Were the four Gospels really anonymous? • What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas? • Did Jesus claim to be God? • What is the evidence for the Resurrection? As The Case for Jesus will show, recent discoveries in New Testament scholarship, as well as neglected evidence from ancient manuscripts and the early church fathers, together have the potential to pull the rug out from under a century of skepticism toward the traditional Gospels. Above all, Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context. General Announcements Sunday, June 24, 2018 5
