I guess it is that I am not used to the angry Jesus whom we read about in the Gospel today. The truth is, my friends, that this Gospel story gives us a chance to contemplate what many scripture scholars term “righteous anger.” Is Jesus really angry about all of the sheep and oxen and doves and buying and selling that is going on in the Temple area? Well, truthfully, yes but it is more than that. It would seem that He is not thrilled about all of the commerce that is going on just outside of the Temple, but perhaps His “righteous anger” has more to do with the injustice that He witnesses (dishonest dealings) as well as the irreverence (lack of respect for God and the things of God) He encountered that day and on other days. Righteous anger is something that can absolutely motivate us to want to do better and be better and bring about better relationships between God and ourselves as well as between ourselves and others. If we simply get mad and stay mad or act out of our anger, then we have missed a great opportunity to learn from what we see as unfair or unjust and we simply stew in our self-righteousness, which is not what God wants for us. Jesus wasn’t angry simply for the sake of being angry, He saw this injustice and irreverence and He decided to work to change it. This work is not necessarily easy nor is it always comfortable, but when we see injustice, when we encounter irreverence no matter what it might be, hopefully we allow prayer and charity, love and forgiveness to be the driving force of change. Honestly, to be consumed by zeal for God’s house and for the presence of God in our lives is a very good thing. How we allow that zeal to manifest itself in our lives is up to us. Perhaps a militant, forceful application of our zeal is not necessarily the best way to go. Rather, we should love God, love others, and make sure that we offer all people the respect and care that we all deserve as children of God. The same is true for God’s house, this physical building the Church. In this place where we encounter the God of love, let us love one another at all times but especially as we gather to worship and to pray. Zeal for God’s house should consume us and help to form us into a people of love. This weekend our Catechumens begin the “Scrutinies” of the Church. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak or sinful in the hearts of the elect (as well as in the hearts of all of us) then to strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ.
