March 7, 2021 Dear Friends,

To be honest, our Gospel for this weekend leaves me a little uneasy. I guess it is that I am not used to the angry Jesus whom we read about in the Gospel today. The truth is, my friends, that this Gospel story gives us a chance to contemplate what many scripture scholars term “righteous anger.” Is Jesus really angry about all of the sheep and oxen and doves and buying and selling that is going on in the Temple area? Well, truthfully, yes but it is more than that. It would seem that He is not thrilled about all of the commerce that is going on just outside of the Temple, but perhaps His “righteous anger” has more to do with the injustice that He witnesses (dishonest dealings) as well as the irreverence (lack of respect for God and the things of God) He encountered that day and on other days.

Righteous anger is something that can absolutely motivate us to want to do better and be better and bring about better relationships between God and ourselves as well as between ourselves and others. If we simply get mad and stay mad or act out of our anger, then we have missed a great opportunity to learn from what we see as unfair or unjust and we simply stew in our self-righteousness, which is not what God wants for us. Jesus wasn’t angry simply for the sake of being angry, He saw this injustice and irreverence and He decided to work to change it. This work is not necessarily easy nor is it always comfortable, but when we see injustice, when we encounter irreverence no matter what it might be, hopefully we allow prayer and charity, love and forgiveness to be the driving force of change.

Honestly, to be consumed by zeal for God’s house and for the presence of God in our lives is a very good thing. How we allow that zeal to manifest itself in our lives is up to us. Perhaps a militant, forceful application of our zeal is not necessarily the best way to go. Rather, we should love God, love others, and make sure that we offer all people the respect and care that we all deserve as children of God. The same is true for God’s house, this physical building the Church. In this place where we encounter the God of love, let us love one another at all times but especially as we gather to worship and to pray. Zeal for God’s house should consume us and help to form us into a people of love.

This weekend our Catechumens begin the “Scrutinies” of the Church. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak or sinful in the hearts of the elect (as well as in the hearts of all of us) then to strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ. These rites should complete their conversion and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all. Join me as we hold the elect in our hearts and in our prayers.

Peace, Fr. Steve Leva

Celebrating What are the Scrutinies? First Scrutiny: March 7 the Year of Second Scrutiny: March 14 Third Scrutiny: March 21 Saint Joseph Parishioners attending 5:00 Mass on 3/6, Noon Mass on 3/14, and 9:00 Mass on 3/21 (the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays To mark the 150th anniversary of naming St. Joseph as of Lent) will share time with the RCIA Patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis has declared group as they prepare to be welcomed Dec. 8, 2020-Dec.8, 2021 to be “The Year of Saint Joseph.” into the Church. The readings focused on the themes of baptism and repentance. St. Joseph parish will celebrate with the entire Church as we The Gospel passages for these three dive deeper to explore the life of our home patron. Follow Sundays include the Samaritan woman at along each week in the bulletin, Facebook, and our parish the well (John 4:5-42), the man born website at st.josephrc.org/resources/year-of-st-joseph blind (John 9:1-41), and the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45). These are the “scrutiny” Sundays. The scrutinies celebrate conversion and offer our Elect an opportunity for introspection along with time for prayer, reflection, repentance, and the exorcisms (a series of blessings conferred to strengthen them against the power of temptation, sin, and Satan; to lead them ever closer to Christ – the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and to deepen their decision and desire to love God above all else). The Elect are asked to ponder the Word of God in their hearts, to know Christ who came to save the lost, to confess themselves to be sinners, to reject all that is displeasing to God, to ask the Holy Spirit to help them overcome their weaknesses, to learn how to please God, and to put their hope in Christ, finding peace and holiness in Him. The parish community is also asked at this time to seek continued conversion of heart so the weak may be strengthened, the broken restored, the lost found, and the found redeemed. Who Are the Elect? The Rite of Election was celebrated here at the parish on Sunday, February 21st at the Noon Mass. During the Rite the parish, on behalf of the Church, accepted and elected Mia Dominick and Lisa MacNeill to continue preparations to be welcomed into the Church through receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the upcoming Easter Vigil Mass on April 3rd.
