Herbert Hartmann View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com WEEKLY LETTER March 7, 2021 Dear Friends, To be honest, our Gospel for this weekend leaves me a little uneasy. I guess it is that I am not used to the angry Jesus whom we read about in the Gospel today. The truth is, my friends, that this Gospel story gives us a chance to contemplate what many scripture scholars term “righteous anger.” Is Jesus really angry about all of the sheep and oxen and doves and buying and selling that is going on in the Temple area? Well, truthfully, yes but it is more than that. It would seem that He is not thrilled about all of the commerce that is going on just outside of the Temple, but perhaps His “righteous anger” has more to do with the injustice that He witnesses (dishonest dealings) as well as the irreverence (lack of respect for God and the things of God) He encountered that day and on other days. Righteous anger is something that can absolutely motivate us to want to do better and be better and bring about better relationships between God and ourselves as well as between ourselves and others. If we simply get mad and stay mad or act out of our anger, then we have missed a great opportunity to learn from what we see as unfair or unjust and we simply stew in our self-righteousness, which is not what God wants for us. Jesus wasn’t angry simply for the sake of being angry, He saw this injustice and irreverence and He decided to work to change it. This work is not necessarily easy nor is it always comfortable, but when we see injustice, when we encounter irreverence no matter what it might be, hopefully we allow prayer and charity, love and forgiveness to be the driving force of change. Honestly, to be consumed by zeal for God’s house and for the presence of God in our lives is a very good thing. How we allow that zeal to manifest itself in our lives is up to us. Perhaps a militant, forceful application of our zeal is not necessarily the best way to go. Rather, we should love God, love others, and make sure that we offer all people the respect and care that we all deserve as children of God. The same is true for God’s house, this physical building the Church. In this place where we encounter the God of love, let us love one another at all times but especially as we gather to worship and to pray. Zeal for God’s house should consume us and help to form us into a people of love. This weekend our Catechumens begin the “Scrutinies” of the Church. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak or sinful in the hearts of the elect (as well as in the hearts of all of us) then to strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ.

  • June 24, 2018 Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
Sunday, April 26, 2015 1 June 24, 2018 Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist JUNE IS DIACONATE MONTH (Part 3 of a 3 part series) My Experience as Deacon Dennis’ Wife - by Jo Gorsuch It is my great honor to journey with Dennis as he responds to his call to the Permanent Diaconate and serves here at St. Joseph Marello Catholic Church. We are blessed to be assigned to this Parish, especially benefiting from the spiritual wealth of the Oblates of St. Joseph and our devout parishioners. When Dennis first told me that he felt a call to become a deacon, I was very surprised, but I encouraged him to follow his heart. Soon we learned that the wife of a Permanent Deacon has a role to play. When a husband/ father assumes the responsibilities of a permanent deacon, there is definitely an impact on balancing married life, family life and career responsibilities. Wives are called upon to accompany the deacon candidates in the discernment process and pre-ordination formation activities. This included psychological testing and interviews prior to our being accepted as a couple into the diaconate class. I attended all weekends of prayer and instruction for the discernment year and the four years of diaconal formation. Participating in this way allowed Dennis and I to grow together, strengthen our marriage and prepare for dedicated service to the church. Each year each wife had the opportunity to express any reservations they had regarding their husband continuing in the formation program in a letter to Bishop Weigand.

ABSTRACT: This bibliographical research, with a qualitative approach, aims to understand the educational proposal of the Oblates of St.

CATECHETICAL RESOURCES IX. APPENDIX I. WHY ST. JOSEPH? WHY NOW? On December 8, 1870, The Sacred Congregation of Rites promulgated the following decree, which communicated the decision of Pope Pius IX to declare St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church, and which also raised St. Joseph’s feast of March 19 to the rank of double of the first class. Quemadmodum Deus Pope Pius IX As almighty God appointed Joseph, son of the patriarch Jacob, over all the land of Egypt to save grain for the people, so when the fullness of time had come and he was about to send to earth his only- begotten Son, the Savior of the world, he chose another Joseph, of whom the first had been the type, and he made him the lord and chief of his household and possessions, the guardian of his choicest treasures. Indeed, he had as his spouse the Immaculate Virgin Mary, of whom was born by the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ our Lord, who deigned to be reputed in the sight of men as the son of Joseph, and was subject to him. Him whom countless kings and prophets had desired to see, Joseph not only saw but conversed with, and embraced in paternal affection, and kissed.

  • The Year of St. Joseph
The Year of St. Joseph Reflections, Prayers, Devotions, and Consecration to St. Joseph THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis proclaimed a special “Year of Saint Joseph,” extending to the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 2021. In a new Apostolic Letter entitled Patris Corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of Saint Joseph as a Patron of the Universal Church, describing him as a model father and a support and guide for troubled times. Here at St. Pius X Parish, we hope to celebrate this special time by honoring St. Joseph throughout the upcoming year. There will be special homilies, monthly reflections, and opportunities for special prayer and spiritual enrichment. This parish booklet offers resources for spiritual reflection, prayer, plenary indulgences, and a consecration to St. Joseph. Why Turn to St. Joseph? In these challenging times, we can turn to St. Joseph with great hope: We can turn to him as protector from harm, even as he protected Mary and the child Jesus from Herod’s wrath; St. Joseph was the worker and provider for the Holy Family, so to him we can entrust ourselves and our nation in the face of unprecedented unemployment and economic distress; As model husband and father, we turn to St. Joseph at a time when good examples of both are so desperately needed. We can ask him to help strengthen our families – as well as the bonds of our “parish family” – at a time when these can be fragile.
