June 17, 2018 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

JUNE IS DIACONATE MONTH (Part 2 of a 3 part series) Requirements to become a Permanent 1. Deacon means “a servant”. A deacon is a cleric who is ordained by the . Once a man becomes a Permanent Deacon, there is no going back to the lay state.

2. A Permanent Deacon is ordained in service to the bishop and is bound to minister where the diocesan bishop assigns him. The assignment may be to a parish but not necessarily the Deacon’s home parish. If assigned to a parish a deacon is to assist the pastor.

3. Three areas of service are: Ministry of the Word, Ministry of Liturgy, and Ministry of Charity.

4. Permanent are permitted to preach; that includes preaching the homily at .

5. Permanent Deacons have the power to impart many (but not all) types of blessings.

6. Permanent Deacons can expose the Blessed Sacrament for Eucharistic Adoration and bless the people with the monstrance.

7. A Permanent Deacon can baptize, distribute the Holy Eucharist, and officiate at a Catholic Marriage and a Catholic Funeral; so long as he has been delegated to do so by the pastor. A Permanent Deacon cannot celebrate Mass (consecrate the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ); nor can he administer the Sacraments of: Penance, Confirmation, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick.
