London Luton Airport (LLA) has been named among the UK’s best airports in the in the 2019 Conde Nast Traveller Reader’s Choice Awards.

The Reader’s Choice Awards are one of the longest-running and most prestigious awards in the travel industry. They cover all aspects of travel and recognise the world’s best hotels, resorts, countries, cities, islands, spas, airlines, airports and cruises and provide a snapshot of where and how people travel. Overall, more than 600,000 Condé Nast Traveller readers submitted a recording-breaking number of responses rating their travel experience.

The five top-rated airports in the UK were:

LLA has recently completed an ambitious transformation project which is aimed at improving the travel experience of its passengers. The £160m investment was the largest project in the airport’s history, and included redesigning the terminal building to make it easier to navigate and opening more than 40 new shops and restaurants for passengers. Surface access is being improved through the construction of a new Direct Air-Rail Transit (DART) system which is being delivered by and will replace the current shuttle bus between Luton Airport Parkway Station and the terminal building.

Commenting on the award, Head of Passenger Services at LLA, Clare Armstrong, said: “This result is a fantastic indication that our passengers are feeling the benefits of our newly transformed terminal building. We’re at an exciting new chapter in our 81-year history and are continually looking for ways to improve the experience for passengers using the airport.”

LLA has invested over £160million to transform the airport and increase capacity to 18 million passengers per year by 2020. The redevelopment includes a complete redesign of the terminal, bringing in more than 40 new shops and restaurants and an additional 3,000 seats. LLA has also carried out major upgrades to transport links, including improved road access from the M1, new car parking facilities, and a remodelled bus and coach interchange.

Passengers travelling by rail will benefit from upgraded rail links to Luton Airport Parkway station as part of a new partnership agreement with Abellio, which will operate the for the next eight years. A half-hourly express rail service between London and Luton Airport Parkway will launch in December 2020. In addition, work is well underway on a £225 million system linking the airport with Luton Airport Parkway station and is anticipated to be completed by 2021. The project is being delivered by the airport owners, LLAL – a company owned by Luton Council.
