The New-York Historical Society, founded in 1804, holds a distinguished collection of books, manu- scripts, graphic materials, decorative objects, histori- cal artifacts, and works of art. Comprising over 350,000 books, three million manuscripts, and distinctive collections of maps, photographs, prints, and ephemera documenting the history of the from the perspective of New York, the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library at the New-York Historical Society is noted for its deep strengths in the era of the American Revolution and the early Republic, the Civil War, and the Gilded Age, with significant holdings relat- ing to Robert Livingston and the Livingston family, , Horatio Gates, Albert Gallatin, Cadwallader Colden, Robert Ful- ton, Richard Varick, and many others. Abolitionism, temperance, and social welfare organizations are also well represented in the collections. Iconographic holdings are huge and include some of the earliest photographs of New York, a significant archive of Civ- il War images, and the archives of the major architectural firms of the later 19th century, including McKim, Mead & White, Cass Gil- bert, George Post, and others. The museum is the oldest in and its art holdings comprise more than 1.6 million works. Among its treasures are all 435 preparatory watercolors for John James Audubon’s Birds of America; one of the nation’s preeminent collections of School landscapes; and exceptional examples of decorative and fine arts spanning four centuries.

In addition, educational outreach and public programs sup- port the institution’s mission to explore the richly layered politi- cal, cultural, and social history of New York City and State and the nation, and to serve as a national forum for the discussion of issues surrounding the making and meaning of history.

New-York Historical’s rich research environment promotes an active intellectual community. Fellows are encouraged to explore the collections and to take advantage of the full diversity of the li- brary and museum’s resources, and to share their research during the course of their tenure through informal talks and blog posts. The New-York Historical Society offers over twelve fellowships. Designed to encourage and promote the use of its extraordinary collections of primary and secondary sources relating to the history of New York and the United States, the fellowships are open to scholars at various times during their academic careers.
