Two items were given by Mr. Gilbert Govan, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and nine letters were transferred from the Governor’s Papers. The materials in this collection measure .42 cubic feet and consist of approximately 125 items. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the James Knox Polk Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. SCOPE AND CONTENT The James Knox Polk Collection, composed of approximately 125 items and two volumes for the years 1832-1848, consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, sketches, letter book indexes and a few miscellaneous items. Albert Gallatin: Champion of American Democracy Friendship Hill National Historic Site Education Guide Post-Visit Activities Post-Visit Activities Post-Visit Activity #1 – Comic Strip Directions: Have students look over several comic strips in the newspaper and look up the definition of the word cartoon. Have them draw or illustrate their own comic strip about Albert Gallatin. The students can base their comic strip on their visit to Friendship Hill, and what they have read and learned about Albert Gallatin. Post-Visit Activity #2 – Headline News Directions: After studying about the Lewis and Clark expedition and Albert Gallatin, have the students make up headlines about the event. Write several of the headlines on the classroom board. Have the students pick a headline and write a short newspaper account about it. The students may read their news articles to the class. Post-Visit Activity #3 – Whiskey Rebellion Flag Directions: The angry farmers in 1794 designed a Whiskey Rebellion flag with symbols that expressed their feelings. Have the students construct or draw their own flags with symbols, designs and logos that express their feelings. Display the flags in the classroom. Have the students examine each other’s flags and see if they can tell what the flags mean. Post-Visit Activity #4 – Artist Poster Directions: Have the students design a poster of young Albert Gallatin using the objects that symbolize his early involvement in Southwestern Pennsylvania and the United States government. Judicial Power, Political Fragmentation, and the Failed 1831 Repeal of Section 25 A ntebellum Americans anticipated contemporary political science when they complained about the tendency of embattled political elites to take refuge in the judiciary. Recent scholarship on comparative judicial politics suggests that judicial review is a means by which constitutional framers provided protection for certain class interests that may no longer be fully protected in legislative settings. Tom Ginsburg claims, "[I]f they foresee themselves losing in postconstitutional elections," the politicians responsible for the constitution "may seek to entrench judicial review as a form of political insurance." 1 Such a constitutional design ensures "[e]ven if they lose the election, they will be able to have some access to a forum in which to challenge the legislature."2 In 1801, Thomas Jefferson foreshadowed this strategy. He asserted that the defeated Federalist Party had "retired into the judiciary as a stronghold ...and from that battery all the works of republicanism are to be beaten down and erased.",3 More than a half century later, Chief Justice David S. *Professor of Law and Government, University of Maryland School of Law. For hours the great states- man had been walking the floor, too miserable for sleep. Then came a knock at the door and Peter handed him a scrap of paper on which was hurriedly scrawled these words, “Mother and boy doing well- a fine hearty youngster, with hazel eyes and to his mother’s delight he has hair like your own. She sends dear love to the Father she is longing to see.” The night was almost over and Thomas Jefferson, after a prayer of thanksgiving, slept soundly. Intensive Level Survey Historic Resources – Downtown Neighborhood City of Niagara Falls: Phase I 3.0 Historical Overview This section provides a narrative history of the City of Niagara Falls with specific emphasis on the Downtown neighborhood. The overview addresses significant trends and themes associated with the city’s historic context. The Downtown neighborhood’s period of significance is identified and examined in this chapter. Martin Wachadlo, architectural historian, conducted the background historic research. 3.1 Niagara County: Physiology and Geology Figure 3-1. Niagara Falls, Niagara Falls, New York Niagara County borders the southern shore of Lake Ontario in the extreme northwestern corner of New York State, and occupies part of the Huron and Ontario Plains. The Ontario Plain comprises part of Lake Ontario to the foot of the Niagara Escarpment1, and the Huron plain extends from the crest of the escarpment southward beyond the county line. The Niagara Escarpment begins in Watertown, New York, USA and extends westerly along the Manitoulin Island in the Province of Ontario, Canada. The escarpment continues through Wisconsin and Illinois. With geological material measuring 64-ft thick, the stratigraphy at Niagara Falls provides a glimpse into the overall rock types comprising the Niagara Escarpment (Figure 3-1). The top layer is Lockport Dolomite, a hard rock referred to as the "Lower Silurian Group." Below the top layer is Rochester Shale, which is much softer and wears away easily with the effects of erosion. Under the shale are harder strata of limestone and dolostone known as the "Clinton Group." Below the harder strata is Grimsby sandstone. -
