Sometimes we have to make changes at short notice so the only way to be really sure of what’s going on is to come to church!

-- 3 -- Jeremy writes... The late Archbishop Anthony Bloom of the Russian Orthodox Church told the story of a woman who came to see him and said, “I have been praying all my life, but I have never experienced God. What should I do?” He advised her to go home and tidy her room and sit still for twenty minutes. “And whatever you do, he warned her, “Don`t pray”. So, she went home and tidied her room and sat still. Curiously, for the first time in a long time she discovered that she had time to look at her room and appreciate it and notice the colours and the items in front of her. She began to notice the ticking of her clock. The silence grew deeper and she felt herself slipping into prayer, but she knew this was the one thing she wasn`t allowed to do. So, she took out her knitting and what with the ticking of the clock and the clicking of her needles the silence grew more profound until at the heart of the silence she became aware of a presence.... What Archbishop Bloom`s advice teaches us is how much what we call faith begins with `awareness` or what we sometimes call `contemplation`. People sometimes think this means making the mind blank, closing our eyes and shutting out the world to `contemplate our navel`. But on the contrary, contemplation means opening our eyes, becoming aware of the world and it`s all too often hidden depths. Someone called it, `a long loving look at the real`. We have a gift in where we live: if home is not the best place for contemplation then just find a bench with a view. There are many to choose from. This contemplative spirit, it seems to me, is a pretty indispensable gateway to encounter with God. It`s not so much a matter of striving to conjure up religious experience but becoming present. Praying, as that woman discovered, is much more like `paying attention`.

-- 4 -- In one of my favourite Gospel stories Jesus asked a blind beggar called Bartimaeus what he wanted. He replied, “I want to see again” (Mark 10.51). In one sense this is a statement of the obvious and yet it has a deeper significance because it`s the plea of someone who had lost his way, not just physically but who couldn`t see where his life was going. Pointedly, on being healed Bartimaeus got up and followed Jesus `on the way`. So, in praying we take Archbishop Bloom`s advice and put ourselves in a place where we can pay attention to the world around us. With Bartimaeus we ask to receive the sight we need to live more fully and deeply, rather than stumble blindly through each day. To pray is to relax into the reality of being loved by God... and rising to the realism of loving like Christ. Jeremy

Julian Meetings usually take place on the second Monday of each month, 7.30 for 7.45pm at St Gregory’s Church Centre, Colyford Road, Seaton. We are a small group who meet regularly in order to grow in the practice of Contemplative Prayer in the Christian tradition. Julian Meetings welcome people of ALL denominations, or none. For more information contact: Sue Price, Reader at St Gregory’s Seaton on 01297 22314, or Liz Molony at St Michael’s Beer.

-- 5 -- -- 6 -- Altar Guild News Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the July Flower Festival a success. The Church was decorated with lovely displays to depict the theme of rainbows. Many thanks also to the Men’s Shed who made the rainbow which was placed over the altar. It was beautifully painted by the children from school. The coffee morning held in Church was well attended, the refreshments served on each of the three days went down well and lots of folk had fun at the Quiz Night held in The Dolphin. Overall, a successful weekend which raised £850 for the Church. Date of next meeting: Tuesday 10th September 10am.

“Questions of Life & Faith” - Meetings once a month on the first Thursday of each month from about 2 to 3.30 in St Gregory’s Centre. See the Church calendar for time & date. Anyone is very welcome to come along and it doesn’t need to be a permanent commitment as each week stands alone. It helps if there is some continuity and knowledge of what has been shared but new questions arise all the time as we think about the world and our life of faith. If this is of interest then note the date in your diary and turn up on the day; no advance booking is needed. Karen Curnock

Has anyone any old sheets or old tarpaulins, etc., they could let us have for use as dust-sheets when we (and our young recruits) are painting the benches, etc.?

Please contact Mandy Graham or Trevor Wood.

New volunteers always welcome!

-- 9 -- The work in the closed churchyard is going well and is providing us with more tantalising snippets of the lives of those who lived a hundred or so years ago. David Morling is itching to be able to spend time on the Records Office information so that he can flesh out the stories which are coming to light on the gravestones. We enjoyed our rock-pooling session on July 5th, even though we only had one visitor. He wasn’t sure if he should come along as he hadn’t any children with him, and we had to reassure him that adults are always welcome. Many haven’t been rock-pooling since they were young, and would feel too self conscious to go out on their own. Hopefully we’ll have some youngsters for the next session which is planned for August 3rd. Our Beach Clean on July 5th saw the faithful few combing the beach for bits of plastic, paper and the odd flip-flop. The litter-pickers which are available outside of the Fine Foundation Centre are well used every day, and our thanks go to Suzanne for ensuring that her empty bread bags are put ready for the rubbish collectors to fill. The tree bees have moved on from the bird box. (Last month I erroneously called them wood bees – or should that be “wannabes”?). We haven’t investigated the neighbouring box as yet, having noticed some wasps going into it. The Bat Friendly Beer group is hoping that the village is now adjudged to be “bat friendly” and will be awarded a certificate. Come to talk to us about how you can help – we’ll be at the Horticultural Show on August 1st. Don’t forget to send photographs of your wildflower patches to [email protected] or post them onto the Beer Village UK Facebook page entitled Beer Photo Competition. This is your chance to win a prize which will be awarded at the Beer Horticultural Society Show in November. Once again, please remember that the baby bats are beginning to fly. Initially they aren’t too good at it, and will quite often land on the ground, or fly very low. This makes them very vulnerable to cats, so please could you keep your cat indoors at night – or at least at dawn and dusk – to help keep the baby bats safe. Female bats only have 1 baby a year so building up numbers of the rarest species takes a very long time.

-- 10 -- Don’t forget that Beer Village Heritage is supporting the campaign for signposted links between the SW Coast Path / and the East Way. -- 13 -- Parochial Church Council

The St Michael’s PCC met on Monday 1st July. The minutes of the last meeting on 1st July are on the notice board at the back of church.

On Monday Jeremy told us he had come to the end of his role as Rural Dean, this has now been passed to Cate Edmund. The PCC discussed a number of things, these included:

The organisation of the Flower Festival weekend 20th to 222nd July.

Developing a Mission Community Action Plan for Beer in liaison with St Gregory’s Seaton.

The possibility of the Beer Men’s Shed on the St Michael’s site, the PCC members were all in agreement should the men leading the project wish this to happen.

Time was spent looking at the running costs of St Michael’s to keep the Church for the benefit for everyone in the village. The figures are staggering: £44,696.00 per year, that is £3725.00 per month and £124.00 a day!!! Donations be it directly in St Michael’s Church or through The Friends of St Michael’s (contact Keith Izzard) are needed and always really appreciated. Beer School recently had a Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (known as a SIAMs inspection), this involved school Governors and PCC members. At the time of the PCC meeting the Inspector’s judgement was not known, but we are pleased now to be able to say our school was judged as Excellent which is the highest grade awarded.

The date of the next PCC meeting is Monday 16th September.

Jean Smith Secretary to the PCC

-- 14 -- Beer WI REPORT August 2019

This month has been busy. In mid June a coach trip for members, friends and husbands went to Buckfast Abbey where we wandered through the abbey, the Monastic Exhibition and the lovely gardens. Following lunch the coach took everyone to the Gin Factory for a tour with a short history, a talk on the ingredients and samples. A great day out.

The following week 5 Beer members joined other Devon WI members on a coach trip to The Royal Mint, overnight hotel stay and a day at St Fagans near Cardiff where old Welsh buildings have been reconstructed.

June’s walk was around Squabmoor Reservoir and East Budleigh Common. The weather was beautiful and 11 enjoyed the walk followed by lunch with Anne Gladstone who, as usual, did all the organising.

Our July meeting was a Poetry Evening at PECO, organised and lead by Sarah Acton. She inspired everyone to write a few lines of poetry or prose. Taking a single line from some of these Sarah has composed a beautiful poem. Many thanks to PECO and Sarah.

The next evening 6 members enjoyed an evening of green bowls at Seaton Bowling Club. Later in the month Andy at Steamers provided 16 of us with a lovely lunch.

All the usual activities continue - book club, writing group and Canasta evenings.

There is no WI meeting in August, but our 4th September meeting will now be held at Beer Congregational Church Hall.

-- 15 -- -- 16 -- South West In Bloom

Thursday the 18th July, the judges visit! The judges arrived and during the course of the day were taken on a carefully programmed tour of the village. They were introduced to numerous worthy organisations and Beer celebrities. They heard about our many modern-day initiatives as well as about our illustrious and sometimes notorious history. They enjoyed a really marvellous buffet lunch (courtesy of Pecorama). The weather was ideal. Beer looked more beautiful than ever. All went to plan. But will all the hard work pay off? Will John and Di’s, and, of course, Ursula’s dedication (Ursula sadly unable to be present due to illness), not to mention the efforts of so many others, earn Beer the coveted Gold it so deserves? We have to wait until October to find out!

Representatives from Beer Volunteers, Beer Men’s Shed, etc., meeting the judges on the Jubilee. -- 17 -- Beer Parish Council Newsletter – July 2019

New benches for the village Many thanks to Mike Green who has rebuilt a bench for the cemetery in time for the Britain in Bloom judges, as well as rebuilding another bench in Barline. It may interest you to know that the concrete ends which Mike used were made by Bun’s late uncle and donated by Bun who also helped with installation. Blocked drains The Council is increasingly frustrated about the numerous blocked drains in the village and will be contacting DCC Cllr Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highways Management to try to resolve this situation. Recycling Bins The installation of recycling bins on the beach continues to be of great concern to parishioners and visitors alike. We feel this is important in view of climate change and the positive impact recycling has upon the environment. Cllr Pook is currently liaising with EDDC officers regarding suitable locations for the bins. Memorial Play Area A working group will be established to progress the renovation plans for the play area. The Parish Council is keen to ensure that the draft plans are fully compliant with Health & Safety legislation before we embark on a period of public consultation. Devon & Fire & Rescue Service Consultation 1 July – 20 Sept There are proposed changes to the service which include potential closures of a number of fire stations where risk and activity is low and the removal of fire engines that are underused. Service changes include the proposed closure of Colyton Fire Station.

-- 18 -- You can take part in the consultation by completing the online questionnaire at www.dsfire.gov.uk or requesting a paper copy of the questionnaire by emailing [email protected] or ringing 01392 872347 20mph speed restrictions DCC Traffic Speeds task group has produced a very full report whose proposals are now going to Cabinet and include trials of comprehensive 20mph limits in various Devon villages. -- 22 -- Pecorama’s Summer Fair on 21st July was their Charity Day with a special reduced entry fee, all of which, less VAT, will be shared between CLIC Sargent (the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families); and Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends.

This year, Pecorama had a variety of activities lined up including arts and craft stalls, flower arranging and displays, excellent entertainment, free face painting and a children’s nature trail.

Here is the response to their request for floral arrangements as taken up by ladies from Beer WI and Beer Horticultural Society. To help raise funds for the charities people were asked to choose their favourite. Di Chorley won. There were 19 arrangements in all and lots of lovely comments. Thank you everyone.
