www.visitsouthmolton.co.uk/community-news For local events and information please see inside The newest live music venue in the South West is the South Mol- ton Jazz Club which meets on the last Friday of every month at the George Hotel, . The Club is dedicated to provid- ing the best in live music by experienced, professional musi- cians. The founder, Nigel Penfold, is keen to point out that the club is not an “open microphone” type operation at which anyone who fancies themselves as a musician can turn up and have a go. By paying the musicians, he is able to ensure a consistently high standard of music and professionalism.

Entry fee is a very reasonable £7, payable at the door on the night, or in advance from the George Hotel. Following in the footsteps of the Retro Rhythm Rascals, who performed on the opening night, and the Pete Canter Quartet, who delivered a most polished and powerful perfor- mance on the second night, Helen Rimmer and her quartet will appear on Friday 27th Janu- ary. The line-up is Helen Rimmer Alto/Tenor saxophone Marcus Vergette Bass Tom Unwin Piano Norm Marsh Drums

They are regulars at and Bude Jazz festivals and bring vigour and sensitivity to a broad set of jazz standards . Expect soulful ballads, blues and driving, lively melodies. February's band is a five piece soul/jazz band called Loney. Fronting it is Jules Moberly, an ac- complished guitarist specialising in Spanish/Latin/Jazz, who is well known in the music scene.

The club is already developing a fan base and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere, together with the good acoustics of the George’s function room, make for an excellent evening out.
